Uses of mother-of-pearl
Description
Book Introduction
“I can’t properly use the mother-of-pearl lock when I think about the way back.
Rather, you can use mother-of-pearl jewelry well only if you don't care about it at all.”
Those who continue their journey into the unknown without giving up their fantasies and desires.
The subtle breath of an angel that permeates every moment of choice and responsibility
Young Writer's Award, Munji Literary Award, Lee Hyo-seok Literary Award, Munhakdongne Novel Award
Award-winning author Ham Yun's first novel collection
Novelist Ham Yun-i, who has established a unique presence with distinct colors and sensuous expressions, has published her first collection of short stories, "The Uses of Mother-of-Pearl Lockers," by Munhak-kwa-Jiseongsa.
Ham Yun-i, who began her career as a writer through the 2022 Seoul Shinmun New Year's Literary Contest, showed off her diverse abilities, including "stable sentences and development, the unique charm of each character, and blank spaces that readers can fill in with interest" (judges' comments). That summer, when "Ganga" was selected as "Novel of the Season," the selection process heralded the emergence of "a rare stylist with the stylistic ability to control the entire atmosphere of a novel without relying on special events or the thematic consciousness of the story" (selection comments).
With “Angels (tentative title),” he solidified this prediction into reality and won the 2024 Munji Literary Award with the praise that “Ham Yun-i’s sentences seem to be forming an irreplaceable style” (judges’ comment). He stamps “the glue that suddenly silences you between smooth and stylish sentences” like “a craftsman’s seal” (novelist Lee Hee-joo) on this collection of short stories.
When dealing with a dynamic combination of a large number of heterogeneous characters rather than a reflection on a small number of homogeneous characters, the contest of diverse forces naturally becomes more prominent.
Rather than the overwhelming laws or formal norms that govern today's world, such as the power of probability or the power of reason, it is the power of magic, the power of superstition, the power of sorcery, the power of prayer, the power of friendship, the power of solidarity, the power of imagination, the power of guilt, and all sorts of smaller forces that operate simultaneously in many directions.
Don't get me wrong.
Power only creates reverberations that shake the surroundings, but it never guarantees good or justice.
There are also negative forces, such as the power of rumor, the power of lies, the power of curses, and the power of hostility, and strong emotions, such as the power of fear, the power of anxiety, the power of resentment, and the power of sadness, also act as unknown forces that cannot know where to turn.
The process of connecting multiple forces and movements is bound to be jarring and revealing, and the map of forces drawn in this way creates a uniquely noisy atmosphere characteristic of Hamyun's novels.
- Iso Commentary, from "Things That Are Not Utopias"
Ham Yun-i's new collection of short stories, including "Ganga" and "Angels (tentative title)", which have received both critical acclaim and reader support, and "The Use of Mother-of-Pearl Boxes", the winner of the 2023 Young Writer's Award, is a "force field where centrifugal force, which expands and disperses along the waves of emotion, and centripetal force, which condenses into specific objects or places, work simultaneously."
What is remarkable about this arena of competition, where various forces intersect and intertwine, is that cooperation and connection, rather than conflict and struggle, arise between the various forces.
As time passes, it may “remain as a grudge or a trace,” but it does not have the power to fall away or disappear. As a result, his novels gradually move closer to the periphery than the center, to the unusual than the typical, and to dynamism than tranquility, creating an incomparable beauty.
In Ham Yun-i's "Heterotopia," which is like a "unique patchwork," we can "imagine the power of another dimension" while looking intently at "the only problem we have to solve to run our lives."
Furthermore, this imagination “will support you” and “make room for you” (Author’s Note).

Into the book
Sarah exhales lukewarmly.
My treasure, your voice calling me is so soft it seems to be coming from inside my head.
I think it's thanks to you walking all the way here that we can see this.
The moon is moving away from the sun like a hand.
Instead of stars, white light pours down above your head.
We are standing in broad daylight again.
Women with shiny faces wearing eyeshadow and lipstick look at me.
I laugh like someone who has been caught in a secret.
--- pp.83-84 From "Old Travel Route"
Mujo placed both fingertips on my neck.
I touched the carotid artery with my thumb and index finger.
Hold your breath.
He said.
I closed my eyes.
Fingertips as cold as iron pressed against my throat, and soon, longed-for white dots appeared.
A blizzard was coming.
Every time I encountered this scenery, the same thought that always came to mind came to mind once again.
How wonderful it would be if this were the end, if only I could stay in this quiet and safe place forever… …
Sunwoo.
Mujo said.
You really shouldn't do that.
I opened my eyes.
The white dots were nowhere to be found, and only Mujo stood there with his hands outstretched.
You've been like that since before.
He said.
You give up so easily.
It's like he's just waiting for a situation to arise where he has to give up.
Mujo hesitated and then said.
Do I have to do that?
--- pp.155-156 From "The Guardian"
I decided to tell you about my history of rule breaking as a consolation.
I remember when I was in elementary school, I got a bad beating from my grandmother for writing my name in red pen and threw away my notebook. I remember when I bought my boyfriend sneakers and got dumped the next day. Even as an adult, I remember falling asleep with the fan on and waking up with a convulsion several times.
I couldn't bring myself to say it, but when I was a teenager, I would step on the threshold and mutter it.
I'm stepping on the necks of old people right now, the necks of my guardians.
“Even though I did these things, I’m still alive.
“Originally, everyone learns by making mistakes.”
--- p.181 From “The World of Rules”
Guys, think about it carefully.
There was a day when you found each other on the street.
The day I was born, the day I was invented.
You thought you opened a whole new door that day.
Perhaps because I don't watch many silent movies, the angel's speech is strangely awkward.
The voice is also cracked.
Oddly enough, all of these elements fit perfectly with the angel's demeanor as he struggles to survive.
You will get better.
The angel whispers.
We'll also learn more about how to live together.
You are good people and you already like each other.
The lover does not respond.
Each person just rubs their eyes or messes up their hair.
Angels are persistent.
He circles around his lover and says:
I remember.
You guys remember, don't you? The moment we realized we were good people.
Until then, I even prayed for someone like that.
The lover cries.
The memories the angel spoke of seem to come flooding back to them.
The angel who saw the crying lover stands still.
The fluttering sound of wings stops.
My treasure, your voice calling me is so soft it seems to be coming from inside my head.

Publisher's Review
A gap in the world created by a beautiful divine being
A vivid trace of adventure left on land with wet feet
Like the 'mother-of-pearl lock' in the novel that allows the person who enters it to be transported to the place he or she wants to reach, the title piece, 'The Use of Mother-of-pearl Lock', is located at the very beginning of the collection of short stories, guiding the reader who opens the book into the fascinating world of Ham Yun-i's novels.
This mother-of-pearl case overlaps with the 'Mirror' of 'The World of Rules' in that it has an unusual and bizarre aspect.
Both are adorned with orphaned decorations, reflecting something on their smooth surfaces and acting as a kind of passageway between spaces.
However, the transcendental powers of these objects do not transport people to other dimensions arbitrarily or easily.
Instead of suddenly drawing in or swallowing up those who stand before them, mother-of-pearl doors and mirrors open their doors and reveal the scenery beyond the here and now only to those who reach out.
Therefore, in the novel, the uses of the two objects are not originally determined, but are determined by the characters who hold them.
The 'I' of "The Purpose of Mother-of-Pearl" and the share house family of "The World of Rules" choose not to give up the mysterious power of each object, but to be with it, and to bear the worries and responsibilities that follow.
When the mother-of-pearl cabinet and the mirror become objects of companionship rather than dependence or destruction, they are transformed into wonderful instruments rather than fearful foreign objects, and “we come to understand a little bit about what the secret is” (The Uses of Mother-of-pearl Cabinets, p.
44) The masters are reborn with even more courage.
The courage that blossomed through the reflections of two mysterious objects touches the 'me' of "Ganga" and the 'me' of "Bad Water" and drives them to jump into the waters of their inner selves that they had previously ignored.
In both novels, the 'I' embarks on an unfamiliar journey, traveling long distances by plane and express bus from the very beginning of the work, but their true adventure begins when they encounter their own faces reflected on the surface of the 'Ganges River' and 'bad water.'
The ‘I’ of “Ganga” feels “guilty of having waited so long” (p.
122) It is not when she gives herself a new name or buys a man that she pours out her thoughts, but after she suddenly falls into the river and gets soaked to the core, and the ‘I’ of ‘Bad Water’, instead of letting the ‘foam of questions rising inside her’ subside, “goes straight into it” (pp.
247~48) He tries to talk to the beings behind the front door who never stopped singing.
They finally walk out of the water by submerging themselves in the water they wanted to get rid of, and then using their wet hands to pick up the debt that had sunk underneath.
The friendship that sustains me by protecting you
It resembles the heart of a weak but strong angel.
Ham Yun-i's novel, which delicately depicts the encounters and separations of people who live together or spend a season together, focuses on the emotion of "friendship," which leads us to discover the "self" that we should cherish through the heart of a friend who cherishes "me."
The feeling of being strangled and dizzy during a fainting game is “not so bad” (p.
127) and said, “If this is the last time, that’s okay too” (p.
139) What “grabs and pulls” the “me” of the “Guardian” toward life seems at first glance to be the words of his friend “Mujo” telling him not to give up on himself so easily, or the evil power of a ghost attached to the back of his neck.
However, the roommates' description of 'I' "swam with all my might and got out of the water" suggests that he was actually "very desperate" (p.
140) It shows that he survived on his own because he wanted to live like that.
And this 'will to live' that is confirmed through friendship gradually develops into a strong will to 'live well'.
It makes us act on the foolish belief that crossing the border on foot alone will make our friends healthy, and turns even the empty wetlands into a festival stage.
Those who share friendship even in the mud and on the floor shine like silver-glittering eye shadow, like celebrities who smile and wave to everyone.
“The Road of Old Friends” (p.
49) When a cold wind often blows overhead, the characters in Ham Yun-i’s novels “look for something warm” (「Old Travel Route」, p.
86) and “wrap a scarf up to your chin” (The Guardian, p.
160)
In order to live, to properly welcome and send off friends, I took care of myself and remembered the precious hearts that would never disappear.
Ham Yoon-i calls the white breath leaking from the lips that sing all the wishes for the well-being and happiness of 'you' and 'me' 'angel'.
Friendship, manifested as an angel under the affectionate call, floats through the air, warming the bodies of friends a little more with its warm breath.
The reader cannot help but cheer on the steps of those who smile faintly, “not knowing that the “subtle” warmth is due to an angel.”
Staying by their side like that, “born from relationships” [「Angels (tentative title)」, p.
259] Become an angel.
Author's Note
I've wanted to be a writer since I was little, around my early teens.
So, if I were to publish a book, I've imagined many times what I would write at the end.
I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember that most of them were thank-you notes naming several names.
These were some kind of toast-like writings.
As the time for the book to be published approached, writing the 'Author's Note' became a difficult and embarrassing task.
I've been avoiding this post for the past few months, and I've felt like I have nothing to write about.
But if you ask me if I really have nothing to say… …I don’t think so.
I'm scared now, and it's painful to look straight at someone with fear, so I think I chose to say I have nothing to say.
From some point on, I began to deeply experience the fear of writing, of expressing something within me that has no form or weight in words.
The words I write reach places where I am not present.
Sometimes printed, sometimes as binary data, sometimes translated into a language I don't know, sometimes in someone's voice.
To put it nicely, they are like clones created by Son Oh-gong by pulling out his hair.
However, these clones do not move according to my will.
Sometimes I'm not even sure if it looks like me.
Even if I regret their existence, once I have done something (written something), I cannot turn back.
The letters move faster and further than me.
The refrain is, "I am as afraid as I am happy about that fact, I have nothing to say."
At the same time, I have received great help from other people's clones over the years.
The many novels, poems, movies, comics, dramas (sitcoms), songs, and other alter egos created by many creators mentioned in the text.
I don't know if those who created them are proud or regretful, but I was able to get through many points in life thanks to their clones.
I was fed with false stories and characters who never existed.
I guess you could say that I raised you.
[… … ]
Ah… … In the end, I ended up writing something like a toast.
I feel sorry for you.
I am the type of person who keeps telling myself that I have nothing to write about, but gets excited just by being given a space.
I hope to be able to fill many more positions with my clones in the future.
I think it's going to be exciting.
Since I'm writing this as a toast, I'd like to express my sincere gratitude to those who read this book.
I hope these novels will support you in a better way than I did.
By doing so, I believe we will create a place for each other.
This book is dedicated to the person who encounters these words now.
As you might expect, dedicating a book to someone was also a major topic of childhood imagination (like the phrase "to ○○" that is often written at the beginning of a book).
I am glad that I have something to offer today.
