Go down to the bone and write
Description
Book Introduction
Wake up the 'writer' sleeping inside you
The world's most free writing methodology!
Up until now, hundreds of books on writing have been published that point out writing errors.
But this book talks about 'how to create' 'good writing'.
In other words, rather than a textbook that emphasizes an educational stance on writing, it shows how to bring out and nurture the potential and seeds of writing that already exist within oneself.
We don't need to fill ourselves with something to write.
Instead, if we remove and empty the elements that hinder writing, we will naturally encounter creativity.
This comes from the author's insight embodied through long-term Zen meditation experience.
The writing techniques in this book share universal truths that can be applied to all aspects of life, including painting, business, and sports.

Into the book
Every time I met Zen Master Katagiri, I asked him questions about Zen, but his answers were always very difficult for me.
But one day, when he mentioned writing, saying, “Natalie, it’s just like writing a line,” I finally understood.
Three years ago he said this:
“Why do you bother coming to meditation meetings? Why don’t you train yourself through writing? If you can immerse yourself deeply in writing, it will take you wherever you need to go.” - From “To the Reader” on pages 12-13
“You can’t do anything with your little strength.
It is the 'great decision maker' who makes things happen.
Your efforts alone are not enough.
“Only when you are moving in the same direction as the universe behind you—the birds, the trees, the sky, the moon, and the countless streams of life—will the Great Determiner help you to make it happen.” - From ‘It Is Not I Who Writes’, p. 39
“When you speak, go only into the words; when you walk, become the walking itself; when you die, become death.”
- From page 57, ‘How to write even when you can’t write’
“When you meditate, you must disappear.
“Make meditation do meditation.”
This also applies to writing.
Let the writing write the writing.
You disappear.
- From page 92, ‘How to bake a cake’
Zen Master Katagiri often said this.
“Please be kind to all things in the world,” I asked him.
“But what are the things that can accept such consideration?” He answered that we should treat chairs, air, paper, and even streets with affection as if they were beings with feelings.
- From page 120, ‘Think outside the sentence structure’
“If the people there knock you down, you have to get up.
Even if they knock you down again, you have to get back up.
No matter how many times you fall, you have to get back up.
That is all you have to do.” - From ‘Don’t Be Eaten by the Mouse of Doubt’, pp. 180-181
“You can’t get used to loneliness.
I take a cold shower every morning.
Every time, I jump in surprise at the coldness of the water.
But I don't avoid the water stream and continue to stand.
Loneliness always bites us.
“We embrace solitude not because we are used to it, but because we learn to stand in it.” - From ‘Use Loneliness’ on page 233
Katagiri often says that he feels a sense of peace when he stands before a great work.
When an artist sees a famous painting, he feels the urge to paint it himself.
Artists radiate vitality, spiritual people radiate peace.
But Katagiri says that for these spiritual people to feel peace, they must be supported by the hard work of life and the contingency that moves the moment, and for artists to achieve vitality in their work, they must come into contact with a quiet peace in an unseen place.

Publisher's Review
Find the seeds of writing that lie dormant within you.
A book not only for writers but also for anyone embarking on an adventure in life.
Since its first publication in 1986, "Write Down to the Bones" has been loved by readers not only in the United States but around the world, establishing itself as a revolutionary writing methodology.
In Korea, it was first published in 2000 and has been loved by readers for 18 years. To repay that love, we have put our heart and soul into the design and proofreading to publish this revised edition.
The cover has been updated to capture the feel of a book that combines Zen meditation and writing, and analog-feeling illustrations of objects familiar to writers, such as fountain pens, typewriters, and coffee cups, have been added to the text.
The valuable reviews of readers who have read and cherished this book so far have added even more luster to this revised edition.

When I read this book to a friend who is a businessman, he said:
“What you’re talking about is exactly like a business story.
That's business.
“There is no difference between writing and being an entrepreneur.”

What is the seed of writing that lies dormant within everyone?
It is said that the writer can make great discoveries from the small and trivial things in life that act as obsessions for him.
The author says that if you can say "yes!" to even a coffee stain on the table, you already have the qualities of a great writer.
Moreover, this book serves as a kind and vivid counselor for the mental struggles that writers face.
'Ignore your inner censor, your critic, everything you write is beautiful, you have the right to write the worst garbage in the world.
Free yourself from unnecessary guilt and feelings of inferiority.'
Ultimately, true writing comes naturally when you broaden your insight and wisdom in seeing the world, when you cultivate confidence in your own mind and life, and when you develop affection for all beings in this world (trees, birds, rocks, chairs, and so on).
Vivid writing comes from the writer's own awakened mind.
The author reached this realization through Zen meditation and is conveying that realization through writing.
