My perfect deserted island
My perfect deserted island
Description
Book Introduction
“I wanted to live as myself, so I went there alone.”
A story as delicious as "Three Meals a Day" and as beautiful as "Little Forest."

The novel "My Perfect Uninhabited Island," which contains the surprising and mysterious life unfolding on an uninhabited island, has been published.
It depicts the process of the protagonist, Cha Ji-an, who, tired of the intense social life and burdensome human relationships, chooses voluntary isolation and lives at his own pace on a deserted island.
After graduating from college and entering a company, Ji-an meets a boss who doesn't like her and her feelings gradually darken.
Ji-an quits her job and goes to Domun Port, where she meets her assistant, Hyun-ju, and the villagers. There, she learns about materials and gains hope that she can live on her own.
The protagonist's four seasons, where he goes to a deserted island, tends a garden with his own hands, cooks special dishes with seasonal ingredients, and experiences the changes in temperature with his whole body, are a time to commune with nature and focus solely on himself.
This is a process of healing past wounds and building strong self-esteem.
The beautiful scenery and the protagonist's intimate thoughts will provide us with a warm, restful resting place where we can catch our breath here and now.
The writing of new writer Park Hae-su, who conveys the characters' emotions in a simple yet resonant way, and the paintings of painter Yeongseo, who captures the seascape with warm colors, harmoniously combine to add to the pleasure of reading.

Into the book
Loneliness is hard to bear.
To say I enjoy it is to deceive myself.
Yet, what is clear is that most of the time on the desert island, I am comfortable and sometimes even very happy being alone.

--- p.11

When I first set foot on this uninhabited island, I assumed that solitude was a state of silence, a state where no sound could be heard except the sounds I made.
But that wasn't the case.
The sounds of solitude are the crunching of sand, the sound of little egrets, and the ceaseless crash of waves.
The scenery unfolding before me was telling me that life is ultimately about living amidst countless noises.

--- pp.38-39

On days like this, it's okay if the order of things gets mixed up or things don't go as planned.
So, stop bothering me with this mess.
It's okay, it's okay... I felt strange as he comforted me like this.
My throat was choked up, whether it was because of the kimbap stuffed in my mouth or because I was overcome with emotion.
I thought as I quickly searched for the water bottle in my backpack.
Today is a day that is messed up from beginning to end.

--- pp.53-54

Later, Hyunju remembered the day we first met and said that I looked so leisurely eating the soup.
He said that when he saw that sight, he immediately knew that he had not come here to die, but to live.
I just enjoyed the soup, but I can read life and death into it.
I couldn't forget Hyunju's words because they were so amazing.
Yes, I came here to live.

--- pp.93-94

I accomplished this with my own hands.
As if it had been a long time since I heard the word "pride," the fact that I had accomplished something with my own hands suddenly dawned on me.
Maybe I've been slowly building up my self-esteem since I came to the island.
It seemed like Hyunju was subtly dropping a hint.

Publisher's Review
“I want to live alone on an island.”
A deserted island diary drawn with the light of the four seasons

"My Perfect Deserted Island" makes us reflect on the pace of life through the protagonist's daily life that flows along with the rhythm of nature.
The scenery of the uninhabited island, with its changing colors, sounds, and sensations as the seasons change, approaches readers as if it were a living being.
The sea breaking dawn under the warm spring sunlight, the nest rocking in the hot summer typhoon, the waves turning cold as if by magic as autumn arrives, and the chilling winter chill unfold vividly before the reader's eyes.

The protagonist, Ji-an, wants to escape from a painful relationship in the city and settles down alone on an island.
They grow crops, put on wetsuits and go into the sea to dig for sea urchins and clams, and climb forests and rocks to draw maps.
At night, I walk along the beach and listen to the sounds of little egrets.
The seasons do not just remain in the background, but are directly connected to Ji-an's emotions.
At first, she arrives on the island full of anxiety, but as time passes, a strong inner strength takes root in Gian's daily life.
At the end of the novel, “winter, the season when discomforts gather together,” comes, but the reader’s heart becomes warm in contrast to the coldness felt in the text, which is probably why.
In a comfortable and natural flow, Ji-an finds her own rhythm step by step, and the reader also follows her gaze and reflects on herself.

My routine is to go into the ocean in the morning, catch abalone, fry them for dinner, and catch fish in the afternoon and grill them.
I walk around the island from time to time and meditate wherever I can.
It's amazing how my body and mind have become a little stronger without me even realizing it.
(Pages 258-259)

Throughout the novel, moments where seasons and emotions move in tandem shine.
The ever-changing light and sounds of nature bring the story to life, and the protagonist's heart, which sways with the seasons but soon becomes stronger, conveys deep empathy and comfort.
"My Perfect Deserted Island" is a light-hearted four-season diary for those weary of the busy and stimulating city life, and a story that serves as a comma that allows them to look into their hearts.

Body and mind becoming stronger and stronger
Rebuilding my world

The phrase “living alone” conjures up images of isolation and loneliness.
However, Gian's island life moves towards recovery rather than isolation.
After leaving her job and coming down to Domun Port, Ji-an suddenly thinks she wants to live alone on an island, and with the help of the port people, she settles down on an uninhabited island.
Although he came to the island without any plan, he rebuilds his shattered life there at his own pace.
I cultivate the garden and walk along the beach to get a feel for the soil, wind, and water.
I mix sesame oil, rice, and homegrown radish greens in a bowl and eat them, and I learn the bittersweet taste of baby radishes that I come across while pulling out weeds.
They pick ginseng from the crevices of the rocks in front of their houses to make pickled vegetables, and dry the fish they catch themselves to store food for the winter.
The process of rebuilding one's shattered life includes meals filled with the island's 'flavors'.

After finishing the morning gathering and setting the table, you can have a spoonful of rice topped with glossy jinuari salad, fragrant seaweed, and soft seaweed side dish all at once.
The crunchy texture of the seaweed throughout the meal, along with the unique bitterness of the seaweed, adds to the enjoyment.
(Page 230)

Eating alone, filling her days alone, and even waking up alone in the morning after being sick all day, life on the island makes her more and more like herself.
This quiet and peaceful story of rebuilding a shattered life, brick by brick, invites everyone to recall memories they wish to recover at their own pace, and instills in them the gentle courage to rebuild them.
When the protagonist lets go of his past obsession with appearances and mutters, “This is beautiful,” while looking at his face reflected in the sea water, the reader also learns to love himself.

About the pride that surrounds us here and now

As the reader follows Gian's story, he or she encounters himself or herself.
Memories of being swayed by society's demands or feeling intimidated by others' gazes, relationships here that were hurtful and hurtful, and moments from certain seasons when I wanted to rebuild my shattered heart come to mind.
"My Perfect Deserted Island" warmly embraces readers in the 'here and now', caught up in a storm of emotions.
Ji-an, who has decided to take care of the island's nature, become friends with the sea, and maintain her daily life silently and completely for herself until the end in a place where no one can see, is moved to think, "I accomplished this with my own hands," and realizes that this is what pride is.
Only then do readers realize that pride is given to those who preserve their most authentic moments.

This novel tells us that what is lost here can be found elsewhere, and that that is growth and love.
Park Yeon-jun (poet, novelist)

"My Perfect Uninhabited Island" is a story about the growth of the protagonist Ji-an, but it is also an autobiographical story deeply imbued with the life of the writer and illustrator.
Artist Park Hae-soo, who lives in a seaside village and practices self-sufficiency, conveys life at sea in a simple and resonant way, while painter Yeongseo, who lives quietly in a place where the seasons change distinctly, captures the story of the protagonist with delicate and warm paintings.
It is probably thanks to this that the four seasons and daily life of the uninhabited island, as well as Ji-an's emotions, feel so vivid.

From the day after I moved, I went out to the beach and walked every day.
Every time I went for a walk, I wondered if something was drawing me to the sea every day.
The thoughts, prejudices, and stubbornness I harbored while living in the city gradually changed into the thoughts, prejudices, and stubbornness of this seaside town.
Some became loose and sagging, while others became firmer and more dense.

Author's Note

Last summer, as I was jumping into the ocean and swimming as usual, I suddenly felt that the water had become much more comfortable than before.
I wanted to stay in the sea for a long time without stepping out of the water or setting foot on it, and it wasn't difficult.
Even as the waves grew higher and the current pushed me forward with great force, I followed the seaweed floating on the water, dodging the waves and currents, and went in and out of the water.
It felt like I became a part of the sea.

I started writing this novel on a winter day a few months later.
I wrote this while imagining what it would feel like if someone set foot on an uninhabited island not far from the sea in front of our village.
Since I walked by the sea every day, I had a lot to talk about about the sea.
It was tormenting to think about things from the past that I hadn't thought about for a while since leaving the city.
But as I wrote it down and faced the reality of the suffering, I became embarrassed and wondered if it was really this small thing that shook me.
I realized anew that writing is indeed another healing process.

I am still on a journey and the future is uncertain.
The same goes for the book's protagonist, Cha Ji-an, who has just set foot on a deserted island.
I wish him the best of luck.
