Balloon of Memory
Description
Book Introduction
Winner of the 2019 Schneider Family Book Award!
“Why did you let that balloon fly away?”
I shouted.
“That’s Grandpa and I’s balloon!”
I sat down on the side of the road and cried.
For the young 'me', every day is a balloon filled with new memories.
And I enjoy spending time talking with my grandfather about balloons.
Especially my grandfather, who has lived for a long time, has a lot of balloons.
Grandpa's balloon is full of wonderful stories that I don't know about.
And my grandfather and I also have balloons of the same color.
This is the memory of the day my grandfather and I went fishing together on the riverbank.
That balloon is a special balloon that only my grandfather and I know about.
But one day, my grandfather's balloons started to fly away one by one, and even the special balloons that contained our precious memories flew away.
Why didn't my grandfather try to catch the balloon when it flew away? I was so sad and angry that I sat down on the sidewalk and cried.
Do you think our memories are no longer precious to Grandpa?
[Memory Balloon] makes you think about cognitive impairment, also known as dementia, without going into lengthy explanations.
Dementia is a reality that many people are already facing or may face in the future.
The illustrations, a mix of black and white and colorful balloons, are beautiful and help readers naturally understand the story and dementia.
Also, [Memory Balloon], which won an honorary award from the Schneider Family Book Award, will be a book that will increase understanding of dementia and provide comfort not only to children but to all generations.

Publisher's Review
Earlier this year, 2019, a drama became a hot topic and the actor who played the lead role won the grand prize.
And once again, the acceptance speech, more beautiful than the grand prize, became a hot topic.
There will be happy moments and painful moments in our lives.
If you look up like the young 'me' in [Memory Balloon], there will be many people who hold on to both happy and painful memories.
Why can't I let go of the balloons I want to turn my eyes away from?
I think it's because each and every balloon is a precious memory that created our lives.
Losing those memories must be a scary and sad thing for both the person involved and the people around them.
But [Memory Balloons] tells us that even if we lose each balloon, our shining moments can be remembered again in someone's memory.
Those memories can sometimes live on for generations.
Looking back up, that's true.
The story of my maternal grandmother's wedding day, the scenery of my father's childhood home that I've never been to, the story of my foreign teacher from across the sea...
We will each have balloons of different colors.
And these balloons aren't just a reminder.
If someone who shared their balloons with us happens to lose theirs, we can tell them about the balloons they gave us.
Like the young 'me' in [Memory Balloon].
Finally, if I may, I would like to imitate the acceptance speech of a great actor and say this:
"So love.
And share shining moments together."
