I know your heart
Description
Book Introduction
Whether your MBTI is T or F, everyone needs empathy!
Learn true empathy by understanding your friend's feelings while protecting yourself!
If you can empathize well, you can build stable and harmonious peer relationships.
Understanding and empathizing with your friend's feelings and perspectives allows for better communication and positive conflict resolution.
Empathy is something we are born with, but it can be developed through learning and practice.
Harvard education expert Dr. Jini Kim and children's book author kindly explain what empathy is, why it's necessary, and how to express it in everyday life.
The delicate and warm illustrations of Albertine Jeunesse Prize winner Jérôme Perat reveal a concrete way to express empathy.
"I Know Your Heart" is the fourth picture book in the "High Five Social-Emotional Learning Fairy Tales" series.

Into the book
Empathy is feeling, thinking, and acting.
“Oh my, that’s really pitiful.”
“It must be so sad.”
Empathy isn't just about feeling another person's emotions.
Think about how you can help in that situation,
You say and do what you can.
My friend and I each bought a chocolate bar at a convenience store and left.
My friend accidentally dropped the chocolate on the floor.
It's not hard to imagine how upset your friend would be, right?
Empathy doesn't stop here, it goes one step further.
Think about how to help your friend and then take action.
“I know it must be frustrating.
I'll share my chocolate.
“Let’s eat together,” he said.
Feel, think, act.
You have to do all three of these to have true empathy.
--- p.16
If you want to empathize well, say this
To a friend who looks listless, ask, “What’s wrong? What’s wrong?”
To a friend who is having a hard time, say, “Are you okay? Should I help you?”
To a friend who looks bored, “Do you want to play with us?”
To a friend who is upset, say, “I know you must be really upset.
“I’ve been there too.”
To a worried friend, “You can do it.
“I’ll cheer you on.”
To a happy friend, “Wow, that’s really great!”
When a friend is sad, it can be difficult to even talk to them.
At times like that, hold your friend's hand or hug them quietly.
Sometimes it's nice to just be there for your friend without saying anything.
That alone will be a great comfort to your friend.
--- p.18
I can empathize with animals too
Did you know that animals have feelings too?
We can empathize with the emotions of animals as well as humans.
Animals can also empathize with human emotions.
I said empathy is feeling, thinking, and acting.
The same goes for animals.
First, feel what the animal's emotions are like,
Think about what would help,
You do what you can.
Whether human or animal
I can empathize with the emotions of all living beings.
Then to everyone
It will be a warm and livable world.

Publisher's Review
“I’m really upset.
“I’ve been there too.”
“Are you okay? Should I help you?”
No matter how many times you tell a child to empathize with their friend, it's still difficult for them to understand.
Rather, it is much more effective to teach very specific words and actions that understand your friend's feelings and express empathy.
If you only emphasize empathy, your child may think that he or she must do anything a friend asks.
Even though you understand your friend's feelings, you should also be careful to let them know that there are times when you must decline a request.
"Know Your Heart" teaches the concept of empathy and how to express it at a level that is just right for a child's daily life and developmental stage.
The world's most affectionate and exciting cheer! "High Five Social-Emotional Learning Fairy Tale"
"I Know Your Heart" is the fourth picture book in the "High Five Social-Emotional Learning Fairy Tales" series.
The 'High Five Social Emotional' series is based on the Ministry of Education's social emotional education theory and was designed to help caregivers systematically develop and support their children's social emotional capabilities at home.
We selected seven core socio-emotional competencies, including understanding emotions, self-esteem, self-regulation, empathy, diversity, manners and etiquette, and good choices, and designed them so that these competencies are strengthened through a cycle.
