Publisher's Review
The term “the Era of Artificial Intelligence” is now being used worldwide.
In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it can be said to be a term that expresses the future society along with digital transformation.
As Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, including artificial intelligence, fundamentally transform society, one of the areas expected to experience the greatest change is education.
In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in the education sector.
As distance learning and non-face-to-face education expand across society, online classes are becoming more prevalent, and interest in artificial intelligence in the field of education is growing.
With the advent of the artificial intelligence era, artificial intelligence technologies, including machine learning and deep learning, which are core technologies of the intelligent information society, are making rapid progress.
In particular, with the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, even complex human cognitive abilities, once considered uniquely human, are being implemented by computers, bringing about significant changes in all areas of our lives.
Along with advancements in artificial intelligence and data science, the digital transformation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to bring about structural changes across society, economy, and culture, further accelerating these changes.
As artificial intelligence technology advances, global interest in how it can be applied in education is growing.
In primary and secondary education, artificial intelligence education can be divided into artificial intelligence understanding education and artificial intelligence convergence education.
AI understanding education includes content education on AI technology and techniques, basic AI literacy education, and AI ethics education, which has been recently emphasized.
AI convergence education can be divided into two types: curriculum convergence education, which combines existing curriculum content with AI technology and data science, and AI-based education, which utilizes AI-based programs in each subject to improve learning outcomes.
In 2020, the Korean government established and is operating a master's program in "AI Convergence Education," a first of its kind worldwide, to enhance teachers' AI capabilities.
It started with 42 majors at 38 universities in September 2020, expanded to 45 majors at 41 universities in 2021, and 50 majors at 46 universities in 2022.
This figure signifies the willingness of each university in Korea to establish an AI convergence major, and demonstrates the potential for continued development and growth in the major in the future.
To support the operation of the newly established AI Convergence Education major curriculum nationwide, Ewha Womans University's Future Education Research Institute was designated as the AI Convergence Education Research Support Center and operated for two years.
The center, which operated from September 2020 to August 2022, developed and distributed at least two textbooks per year for common major subjects and major subjects related to AI convergence education in the first and second years, respectively, to support the operation of the curriculum at universities that have established major courses.
Developing textbooks that will serve as the foundation for class operation is crucial to strengthening the newly established AI Convergence Education major curriculum.
This time, professors who voluntarily participated in the development of basic textbooks have joined forces and decided to publish a separate textbook.
Unlike developing textbooks for traditional subjects, having professors with diverse backgrounds in newly created interdisciplinary majors come together to write a book is a significant challenge in the academic world.
The publication of this work is the result of the patience and hard work of all the professors who participated.
I would like to take this opportunity to once again express my gratitude to the professors who participated.
I would also like to express my gratitude to the CEO of Park Young Story and the editorial staff for their help in bringing this book to life.
This book was designed for the first class of a master's program introducing a new interdisciplinary field called 'AI Convergence Education.'
But I also hope that it will be helpful to many teachers in the field.
This first edition, published this time, is the beginning of an effort to challenge a new field, and I hope to continue to develop with each new edition.
