The winner of the 14th Jaum and Moeum Youth Literature Award, 『Sunil Middle School Yangpuni Club』, was a novel unanimously selected by the judges, and was praised as “a work that cleverly summarizes the elements that readers expect from a youth novel” and “a charming work that captures the reader’s attention with unique sentences while also fully showcasing the characteristics of teenagers.”

Ye-eun, Bo-min, Jong-hee, and Shi-rae are now in their third year of middle school.
The four best friends sneak into the annex multipurpose room to enjoy their last year of middle school together, making shaved ice and bibimbap in a large bowl filled with all sorts of ingredients.
In the crispy bowl, papaya jam, almond milk, pickled radish, and canned tuna are topped with each person's worries.
Children who had always taken it for granted that they would be together eventually distance themselves from each other as they experience various incidents stemming from their own worries, but eventually come to understand each other, integrate, and grow.
The four-person, four-color Yangpun club, which is so richly mixed, attracts the attention of Yuri, a girl in the same class with an unapproachable atmosphere… … .

Into the book
So, it won't work.
It is a matter of clearly distinguishing between your pain as your pain and my pain as my pain.
Sleeping soundly alone in the deep night, leaving you with a tired body and mind.
Yoon Ye-eun and Son Bo-min, Jeon Jong-hee and Choi Si-rae turn a blind eye to each other's loneliness, sadness and wounds.
It was as impossible as dividing a bowl into sections, down to each grain of rice, and saying, "This is yours, so look carefully from here to here."
It was a cold thing.
--- p.7-8

“Don’t cry, Ye-eun.
“I’ll do better from now on, okay?”
I thought it was strange.
Hanju was not the one who fell into the sea with Ye-eun.
Hanju was more like a lifeguard throwing a rope to Ye-eun while watching her on the sandy beach.
Even though we did it together, Hanju was okay, but Ye-eun was not okay.
Ye-eun felt like she had lost something, but Han-ju acted as if he had gained something from Ye-eun, and so he acted as if he had to take responsibility for Ye-eun.
Ye-eun couldn't understand that gap.
--- p.28

Ye-eun put the test kit in a black convenience store bag, tied it up, and shoved it deep into the trash can.
It was the kind of anxiety I never wanted to experience again.
Then he came out and slowly shook his head at Shirae, who was standing there with an anxious expression.
“No.”
As Ye-eun bent down to wash her hands, Shi-rae gently placed her palm on the back of her head.
Shirae's hands were very cold.
--- p.39

Making and eating shaved ice with friends is one of the most enjoyable times in life.
I didn't want to waste that time in front of the glass like this.
But now, it felt more natural to agree with Yuri's words rather than talk about how special and precious our Yangpun was, and Bomin followed suit.
“Go on a diet before it’s too late.
“I’ll start again too.”
"You're dieting? I thought you were naturally skinny."
Then Yuri gave him a cold look.
"what.
“Where is the original skinny body type?”
--- p.58

“Will you listen to everything?”
“Huh? Yeah, of course.”
I'll listen to everything.
I will listen carefully as if I were listening to a lecture.
I'm good at listening.
As he watched Ye-eun waving her arms and making a promise, Bo-min thought of a piece of chocolate.
Something cute, sweet, and pleasant.
Melting people's hearts.
Something that I enjoyed and loved with all my heart.
Fortunately, it is still by your side and remains in your heart.
--- p.76

When he became a middle school student and his father went to jail, Jong-hee admitted it.
That the father I'm waiting for will never come.
If that's the case, it would be better if you never came back, but when I forget, you appear in an unwanted form like this and tear my heart apart.
“I’ve been thinking about my father’s funeral in my head more than ten times over the past six months.
I thought he might have been stabbed to death somewhere.
When I got a call from an unknown number, my heart sank, thinking it might be the police.
“How can you not even think of making an excuse?”
“…….”
--- p.88

"thank you."
It was a greeting that Bomin was going to make, but Jonghee struck first.
“What? Thanks to you, I was able to see the airport and have fun.
“Thank you too.”
Bomin smiled brightly while eating French fries.
Jong-hee also laughed along.
The moment Jong-hee heard Bo-min say that it was good that he wasn't cold-hearted, he was certain that his life would be led in a better direction from now on.
(……)
"crazy.
Choi Si-rae must be really crazy!”
Then I showed Jong-hee the photo that was posted in the group chat.
It was a selfie of Shirae with a shaved head.
--- p.114

When I said I wasn't going to high school, I meant it.
It wasn't a plan to just spit it out like this without a plan, but it was a future that had been decided a long time ago within Shirae.
Shirae looked at the laptop wallpaper.
It was a still cut of an alien quietly praying with its tentacles on the forehead of Tom Guidi, who was sleeping listlessly after receiving cancer treatment.
Shirae is one of my favorite movie scenes in the world.
My alien, where are you?
Shirae muttered.
Shirae's bald head was reflected in the moonlight.
--- p.114

Dad: It's not enough that you're announcing that you're going to the same high school as everyone else, but you dare to even set conditions?
Mom: Even if you don't know much about the world, you watch movies every day, and now you're saying you want to be an actor?
Poetry: How harsh is that place? How can you survive without money or a hundred dollars?
Sio: Isn't your face a bit plain to be an actor?
As she listened to the words pouring into her ears like a bomb, Shirae suppressed the anger that was rising coldly from her lower abdomen.
As expected, our genres are different.
--- p.140

As I spent time with Bomin, the strings in my heart began to loosen little by little, and through that, the secrets I wanted to keep hidden kept leaking out.
Yuri was afraid of being defenseless.
Out of fear, he would suddenly become cold towards Bomin.
It wasn't anything visibly bad or painful, but I felt like my stomach had been upset for too long.
I could bear the hunger, but sometimes a strong hunger-like feeling would come to my heart.
Someone who can show me everything and still understand me even after showing me everything.
I wish there was at least one person like that in the world.
Strangely enough, Bomin always came to mind at such times, but I never had the courage to contact him first.
--- p.166

“Before you graduate, you should come to the multipurpose room.”
Just before going down the spiral staircase again, Shirae spoke to Yuri's back.
“In the multipurpose room? Why?”
“There’s a sheep there.”
Bomin answered in a sly tone.
Yuri then seemed to remember and said, "That's right, what kind of club did you guys start?"
Yuri tried to dismiss it as childish, but she decided to admit that she had actually been envious the whole time.
And I realized that when you envy someone for their neatness, you only end up wanting to be like them.

Publisher's Review
★The 14th Jaum and Moeum Youth Literature Award Winner★

Yangpun Club Charter:
We are a community of destiny and a community of emotions.

When you cry, I cry too!

Starting with "The Shop That Sells Time," the Jaum and Moeum Youth Literature Award, which has presented a variety of stories for dreaming teenagers, from "The Boy Who Swallowed Sound," "I Wish All the Kids in My Class Would Fail," and "The Special Walnut," which was recently selected as a recommended book for the Literature Sharing program, has reached its 14th year.

This award-winning work, “Yangpungi Club of Sunil Middle School,” depicts the colorful lives of the “Yangpungi Club,” a group of students who spend their last year of middle school together in the same class. It was praised as “a work that does not fall short in demonstrating the virtues of youth literature.”
This book is also the first youth novel by author Ji-wan Kim, who began her career with the children's story "Ireland," which won the 20th Ma Hae-song Literary Award.

Ye-eun, who is interested in decorating, Bo-min, who must try the new dessert, Jong-hee, who is always busy competing in all kinds of competitions, and Shi-rae, a movie fanatic who is not interested in anything else and only loves movies.
To make the most of their last year of middle school, the four best friends sneak into the annex multipurpose room and make and eat shaved ice and bibimbap.

While the kids chatter, take pictures, and grumble about not wanting to study, the worries of each person gradually become clearer as they are topped on top of the papaya jam, almond milk, pickled turnips, and canned tuna in the clanging bowls.
The kids of the Yangpun Club, who were always supposed to be together, start to distance themselves from each other and even argue with each other as they experience various incidents that follow from their own worries.

Ye-eun, a member of the Yangpun Club, recently broke up with her boyfriend, but she still can't forget him.
Shirae, who has been best friends with Ye-eun since first grade, gets frustrated with Ye-eun's listless attitude, and Ye-eun becomes increasingly annoyed by Shirae's attitude, and the two end up fighting.
Jong-hee and Bo-min try to reconcile the two, but Ye-eun is already very sensitive because her period hasn't started yet, so they only give her a cold shoulder.

Even after breaking up, you want me to watch your every move? (Sirae never told me to do that.) Why should I do that? (Sirae never told me to do that.) Ye-eun didn't want to admit that it wasn't Shirae but herself who was making her angry.

But best friends will always be best friends.
When Ye-eun returns home, she contacts Shi-rae, confident that Shi-rae will never leave her alone under any circumstances.
After confessing everything about her ex-boyfriend, she feels secure as she leans on Shirae's shoulder, who guides her with dignity like an older sister.

However, this does not mean that Ye-eun will always be spoiled by the children, especially Shi-rae.
When Sirae suggested that they all get together and make and eat Yangpun Bingsu, the one who was the happiest was Bomin, who loves desserts.
However, Bomin starts to become a little strange when he becomes friends with Yuri, a classmate who goes to the same academy, through social media.

Thirty-eight… … .
Bomin hummed softly about Yuri's goal of weight.
As I said and heard that unrealistic number, I desperately wanted it.
Without even knowing why I want it.

_In the text

Bomin, who always ate a lot of rice and stopped by the store for a snack, became a child who couldn't even eat a proper meal, let alone snack.
Yangpoon, who was worried about Bomin, felt a brief sense of happiness as he was led by the club kids to eat chocolate bread and strawberry milk, but soon vomited everything he had eaten out of fear of the number on the scale the next day.

On the last day of the exam, Bomin collapses while taking the exam, and Ye-eun follows him to the hospital as a representative of the children.
And although he knows that feeling well, that he can't tell anyone and that telling them won't make things better, he persuades Bomin that it's better to talk about it anyway.
When Bomin confides in the children about his obsession with eating, believing in Ye-eun's kind heart, the children embrace Bomin while simultaneously distancing themselves from Yuri, the cause of his obsession with eating.

There are times when we scatter or become distant,
In the end, it always mixes warmly like bibimbap
You, me, us

In order to alleviate Bomin's obsession even a little, Jonghee spends a lot of time with Bomin, who asks to go for a walk every day.
And as we take a long walk together around the neighborhood, he gradually reveals some rather unusual stories about his father and his family history that he had not revealed before.

The problem is that the father disappeared for half a year and then suddenly returned and contacted Jong-hee.
Jong-hee, who came back from meeting his father, is unable to properly prepare for the competition and is only stressed out because of his father's attitude and his own inability to let go of him.
Fortunately, thanks to Bomin's silent support of Jong-hee, the gap between Jong-hee and his father is bridged a little.

Dad hesitated for a moment, then ran his hand through Jong-hee's bangs.
A rough and awkward touch.
Jong-hee began to think that perhaps what he had been waiting for all along was not an apology that was already too late, but this very touch.
Jong-hee already knew that there was no grand reason why people could not hate each other.

_In the text

At the end of the summer vacation, when all sorts of things had happened, Shirae decides to shave her head.
Because of this, I get a lot of hateful looks from my teachers and family.
Even Shirae's surroundings become even more chaotic when she declares at home and at school that she will not go to high school.

After a brief moment of refreshment from shaving his head, Shirae, who was wondering what he likes besides movies, stumbles onto a movie set and ends up appearing as an extra, which sparks his dream of becoming an actor.
The children cheered on Shirae's dream, but her family responded coldly.
Then, instead of going to school, Shirae turns her steps to the Busan International Film Festival to show her true feelings about her dream.
Yangpun didn't even say anything because he was afraid that the kids at the club would stop him.

As he watched the scenery quickly passing by outside the car window, Shirae made three resolutions.
Never let go, never love, never give up.

_In the text

Yuri, who had been encouraging Bomin's obsession with eating, quietly watches from afar the kids at the Yangpun Club, who always stick close to him even though they bicker so often.
However, when the 'Han Yuri Incident' breaks out during the school trip, Yuri's school life begins to become uncontrollably dangerous.

It's okay.
Because it's vacation soon.
Because graduation is coming soon after vacation.
Whenever she felt anxious, Yuri would mull over her academic schedule in her mind.
For high school, I was planning to go to a school in the city where my mother was assigned to her new company.
There, everything can start anew.

Your sparkling child, your beloved child, Hailey.
There, Yuri will become a child like Hailey.

_In the text

The last winter break of middle school has finally begun.
Yuri, who thought she would be isolated and separated from everyone, tries to reach out to Bomin and the children once again after an incident suddenly happens to her.

The value of 'togetherness' and the power of being there for one another.
The voices of warm hands readily extended

In this way, 『Sunil Middle School Yangpungi Club』 exquisitely captures the process of children who seem to naturally be together like Yangpungi bibimbap scattering, growing apart, and then naturally merging again like bibimbap.
Another charm of this novel is that it fully reveals the characteristics of teenagers by fully utilizing the individuality and narrative of each character.

Also, within the story, the children interact and move very closely and organically.
Even though each of them has their own distinct character when viewed separately, the four children are richly intertwined and harmonious within the story so that the readers do not feel that it is foreign to them.

In fact, the topics covered in this novel, such as teenage pregnancy, pro-ana, parental divorce, and family conflict, are easily dark and heavy.
The ending, refined and organized to suit the readers' perspective, clearly shows how youth literature should speak to young people and in what way it should reach them.
This may be why the judges described the work in their comments as embodying “the virtues of youth literature.”

When things get tough, we often feel left alone in the world.
But when we step back from that moment and think about it, we realize that there was someone in the hole we were trapped in, someone waiting with their arms outstretched for us to grab the rope and grab their hand.

This novel, "The Yangpun Club of Sunil Middle School," gives us a rope.
It is a rope filled with the value of being together and the power of being by your side.
Through this novel, readers will meet their own Ye-eun, Bo-min, Jong-hee, Shi-rae, and now Yu-ri, who is ready to reach out to others like the kids at Yangpun Club, at a time when they feel alone.
I hope that we can move forward together towards a brighter world, hand in hand with those around us.

I want to tell you to cheer up even if things don't end neatly and tidy, even if shadows fall on your heart again.
Let's not get tired of the hard work of life, but enjoy the clean sunlight and wind that come in between.
Let's cheer up.

★Reviews★

"The Yangpun Club of Sunil Middle School" is a work that cleverly summarizes the elements that readers expect from a young adult novel.
In a word, it is a clever work.
This work is not lacking in demonstrating the virtues of ‘youth literature.’

That is why all the judges unanimously gave their hands up to this novel.
I am confident that the healthy appearance of the characters portrayed by the author will be remembered by readers for a long time.
