Beyond consciousness
Description
Book Introduction
This is a record of conversations held with seekers by Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897-1981), the Indian spiritual master widely known through his book 'I Am That', during the last years of his life (1979-1981).
This is an independent Korean edition, chronologically rearranged and edited from the original three-volume edited transcripts of this period by Maharaj's American disciple, Gene Dunn, and two years' worth of manuscript transcripts of other conversations held by Belgian devotee Josef Nauwelärts.
It consists of 101 chapters, and explains the Absolute, the ultimate reality, the universal consciousness that permeates the entire phenomenal world, and the principle of knowing “I am” of individual beings with one body, and the concise and profound path to enlightenment that leads to universal consciousness and then to the Absolute through this knowing.

Into the book
You have to be conscious and hold onto consciousness.
Pay attention to this taste called 'I'.
Don't pay attention to fear, pay attention to your reality.
Once you know what you are, there is no fear.
Eliminate the concept of death from your mind.
There is nothing that can be called death.
---p.55
Universal consciousness has always existed and its power has always existed.
Its creative power gave birth to this world, and it produced this Prakriti and Purusha.
And its soul is personal consciousness.
It is a spontaneous, manifested, dynamic spirit.
---p.69
Live fearlessly while you live.
Because no one created you.
You live with your own light.
Live with confidence, especially in your true self.
---p.85
The evidence of the Eternal is this impermanence, the evidence of truth is this untruth, and the evidence of Brahman is Maya.
---p.90
You are the proof that God exists.
Without you there is no god.
---p.91
Correct meditation is introspection into your true self.
There should be no concepts or images present during the meditation.
---p.114
As long as you identify with your body and mind, you are conditioned.
But once you are unconditionally secure in the knowing that “I am,” you are the manifested “I am” and are no longer an individual.
In that manifested state of 'I am', there is nothing you can do.
Because you are no longer an individual.
---p.161
Consciousness itself is God, and only through that Being, that is, consciousness, are the secrets of all phenomena, of all creation, revealed to you.
Nothing else will be so revealing.
Everything else is just a concept.
---p.174
There is no being in this world that is born, lives, or dies.
There is nothing like that.
It is just a play within consciousness.
---p.178
The true man does not care about the various religions of the world.
It was created by humans.
What have humans created from these diverse religions? Very little happiness or satisfaction, and enormous jealousy, hatred, suffering, and differences of opinion.
---p.191
The state of being is called God.
The state of God is the entire phenomenal world.
That is my state when I experience (the world), and that is duality.
But my unmanifested state is non-dual.
In that state, there is no experience, no manifestation.
I, the Absolute, am not in a state of 'being'.
---pp.232,233
As you sink into consciousness, the factual state of reality will be revealed to you, and there will be a knowingness that will emanate from you like a spring.
This knowledge will enable you to distinguish between what is real and what is not, and most importantly, it will enable you to realize what you are.
---p.257
Birth and death are things we have heard of.
Birth refers to the birth of a body, which is made up of the essence of food.
Atman is already omnipresent like space, so there is no need to enter this body.
Since the Atman principle is omnipresent, if the body is healthy, its functions will naturally begin to function.
This principle is immortal and indestructible.
---p.280
The primary goal of true spiritual study is to completely liberate ourselves from our concepts and conditioning.
When we follow any religion, sect, or doctrine, we are inevitably conditioned.
Because we have to accept the uniform and the physical and mental discipline.
---p.284
Universal consciousness doesn't come from anywhere.
It exists everywhere.
It exists in potential form in whole foods.
It doesn't come from anywhere, it's already latent.
As soon as that form is created, life energy and consciousness automatically appear within it simultaneously.

Publisher's Review
Nisargadatta Maharaj, famous for the classic meditation book “I Am That,” is one of the greatest spiritual teachers of 20th-century India, along with Ramana Maharshi.
He is a teacher who, through complete enlightenment, described the teachings of non-dualistic Vedanta (Advaita Vedanta), which represents the highest level among various Indian spiritual traditions, in concrete language, and furthermore, clearly pointed out the limitations of the ancient Upanishads, and is highly revered by leading Western meditators.
His teachings go beyond common sense, for example, he says that the self-concept of “I exist” comes from food made of the five elements of Jisuhwapunggong.
However, the five elements themselves come from the 'universal consciousness' that is omnipresent throughout the universe.
In fact, this phenomenal universe itself is merely an expression of this consciousness.
But this universal consciousness is not the ultimate reality.
The Absolute, the ultimate reality, is beyond this consciousness.
The God we speak of is just another name for this consciousness.
Therefore, God is not yet ultimate.
Rather, without our 'personal consciousness' the phenomenal world itself does not exist, and there is no God.
So Maharaj says, “No one created you” and “Consciousness itself is God.”
As the title suggests, this book explains the path that leads us first to universal consciousness and then beyond that to the Absolute.
This is the true path to enlightenment and salvation.
The reason why ‘enlightenment’, not ‘heaven’ or ‘resurrection’, is the true salvation is because we are in fact universal consciousness and, furthermore, the absolute.
The seeker who hears these teachings from the true master who has realized this absolute being and is completely convinced of them, eliminates ignorance and attains true knowledge through that very conviction.
This teaching from the last years of Maharaj's life can be said to be the final conclusion of Nisargadatta Maharaj, in that it completely explains the ultimate goal and path that all beings must ultimately follow.
