Description
Book Introduction
C.
The author who most influenced S. Lewis
C., who is considered the greatest Christian apologist of the 20th century.
S. Lewis made no secret of the fact that all his writings were influenced by George MacDonald and that he considered him his mentor.
George MacDonald (1824-1905) is called the 'father of fantasy' today, along with Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', and G.
K. Chesterton, J. of The Lord of the Rings
RR
It also had a great influence on Tolkien.
He wrote over 50 books, including novels, fairy tales, poetry collections, sermons, and literary criticism.
These books, with their rich imagination, provided a refreshing shock amidst the Victorian era when realistic novels were in vogue, and they brought comfort and hope to a world dominated by strict culture and rife with social discrimination.
C.
S. Lewis expresses his affection for McDonald in a long preface to his book, The Selected Works of George McDonald.
He said, “McDonald is extraordinarily prepared to teach a religion that places the most central of all relationships, that of fathers and sons,” and that “in editing this anthology, I have fulfilled a duty that I felt was a debt to me.”
The contents of 『The Selected Works of George MacDonald』 are mainly excerpts from 『The Undelivered Sermon』, a collection of MacDonald's sermons and the book that had the greatest influence on Lewis, and 『Chronicle of the Quiet Neighbor』, 『Seaside Parish』, 『Wilfred Cumbermead』, 『What's Mine Is Mine』, 『Phantastes』, 『Lilith』, 『The Princess and Cuddy』, etc. are also introduced.

Into the book
Jesus cried out, “My God,” even though God was invisible and not felt near [Matthew 27:46].
It was precisely at that moment, when Jesus' faith seemed on the verge of collapse, that his will finally triumphed.
There was no emotion there to support his will, no beatific vision to absorb him.
Just as his body was stripped naked and scourged before Pilate, so his will was also stripped naked and tortured within his soul.
But even though he was surrounded by suffering, his will was declared pure and simple.
I am on God's side.
--- p.32
Our Lord never intended to be original.
--- p.43
In the dungeon of the Self, the only things that exist are the sparks from striking flint and the light from rubbing the walls in a gloomy and sullen state, and the only air there is the breath from our noses.
When you step outside, there is the bright sunlight of God and the sweet breeze of the universe.
There is only one door out of the dungeon of the ego: love of neighbor.
--- p.49
He who chooses duty is a true man.
And finally, the person who does his duty without thinking about it and without even forgetting the name of duty is a perfect person.
--- p.191
I can say with all my heart and with all my strength that no one can please God unless he keeps the law perfectly.
But the enemy's lie is that God does not spare anyone else.
What father wouldn't be delighted by his young son's first, tottering steps? And what father would be satisfied before his son has even grown up and begun to walk with dignity?
--- p.55
There is no way to avoid it.
Heaven cannot contain even a little of Hell.
You must not keep any devils in your heart or in your pocket.
Satan must be cast out.
Even a single hair, a single feather!
