Book Introduction
The definitive edition of Lesslie Newbigin's thought, a prophet for the 21st century church!

Recommended by Kang Young-an (Professor Emeritus, Department of Philosophy, Sogang University), Lim Tae-sun (CEO, GMP), and Shin Kyeong-gyu (Professor, Department of International Culture and Mission, Kosin University)

When Lesslie Newbigin died in 1998, The Times described him as “one of the foremost missionary figures of his generation” and “one of the most outstanding figures in world Christianity in the second half of the 20th century.”
He was a thinker who provided an ideological framework for the missionary challenge of the church in the age of reason, and a prophet who testified to the truth of Christianity based on God's revelation in an age that denied absolute truth.

Newbigin believed that the marginalization of religion and its relegation to the private sphere began with the idea of objective knowledge after Descartes (1596-1650).
The age of reason has arrived, and human reason has emerged as the sole judge of both human and divine truth.
And divine revelation descended from the prince and was rejected, and the knowledge of God, the Creator of all things, was reduced to the realm of 'private', even though it was 'public'.

Newbigin found in Michael Polanyi's insights a broader concept of knowledge than the idea of objective knowledge.
In his book Personal Knowledge (Arcanet), scientist Michael Polanyi argued that “the complete objectivity usually attributed to exact science is a deception and in fact a false ideal.”
Polanyi's approach is, in fact, a complete antithesis to the 'Enlightenment', which asserts the objectivity and superiority of 'reason'.
Newbigin used Polanyi's concept of "personal knowledge" to defend the idea that our knowledge of God is also true knowledge, thus opening up the possibility of discussing the truth of religious knowledge once again.
This book is a compilation of Newbigin's final lectures, and can be considered an introductory text that covers Newbigin's thoughts and theology in a balanced way.
