Description
Book Introduction
A complete translation faithful to Jonathan Edwards' intentions!

This time, 『David Brainerd's Life and Diary』 published by Blessed People
This is a “complete translation” following Jonathan Edwards’ intention.
Edwards divided this book into three main parts.

Part 1, Brainerd's Diary
Part 2, Brainerd's Missionary Journal
Part 3: Edwards' Sermon Reflecting on Brainerd's Life

The previous book introducing Brainerd was an “abridged” version of the first and second diaries, so it was difficult to properly feel the breath of the original text and it was not very long.
This time, 『The Life and Diary of David Brainerd』, published by Blessed People based on the 2007 edition of The Banner of the Truth, is a complete translation that faithfully preserves Edwards' intentions.

Book structure

Part 1, "Diary," is a personal diary written by Brainerd from his spiritual rise as a youth, his conversion in 1739, until his death from tuberculosis in 1747.
Edwards edited this book into eight chronological parts, with his own comments throughout the diary, to make Brainerd's diary more accessible to readers.

Part 2, 'Journals', are two missionary journals written by Brainerd as reports on his work to the Scottish Evangelical Association, which sent him out as a missionary.
This book, which is an objective report different from the first part of the diary, was published as a separate volume under the title “The Amazing History of Grace: Its Beginning and Progress” at the time because its value and impact were recognized.
This is a valuable resource that illuminates not only Brainerd's life and ministry, but also the specifics of contemporary Indian missionary work.

Part 3, “Appendix,” contains two sermons: “The Funeral Sermon” delivered by Edwards at Brainerd’s funeral, and “Reflections and Observations,” which reflect on Brainerd’s life and discuss what true faith is.
In particular, “Recalling Brainerd” is such an important sermon that Ian Murray, in his biography of Edwards (“Jonathan Edwards: Life and Faith”), pointed out that some later editions of “David Brainerd’s Life and Diary” omitted this sermon, which was a serious mistake that seriously damaged Edwards’s intention. It is a writing deeply related to the intention that Edwards spent two years organizing and publishing this book.

Also, with this new and accurate translation, you will be able to experience the essence of the original text while being easy to read.

Why We Should Read Brainerd In this book, we encounter Jonathan Edwards' portrait of one of the most remarkable Christians of all time.
We encounter an example of true biblical faith, one that embodies Edwards's "Religious Affection."

He is a true example of a minister who shows how to follow God, love the congregation, and serve as a pastor, missionary, and minister.
Moreover, it is an honest and great confession that shows what it means to love God as a Christian.

It's a large book with 816 pages, but once you start reading, you won't be able to put it down. It's a book with such a high level of spiritual concentration that you'll be sad to see the remaining pages running out.

Despite the significance of Brainerd's legacy (just look at the testimonials from countless spiritual giants who have recommended him), his life and writings have been relatively underrepresented to our readers.
I sincerely hope that this book will provide our readers with an opportunity to enjoy the precious legacy he left behind in a rich and widespread way.

This book will be a valuable resource for those of us living in times of crisis, allowing us to deeply reflect on what it means to love God.
