Description
Book Introduction
Meet the United States, a nation of immigrants embracing universality amidst diversity.

A "salad of race and culture," what does American history look like? This book chronicles the birth of "the United States, a nation embracing universality in diversity," from its inception through the fusion and clash of disparate cultures—Asia, Native American, European, African, and immigrants from around the world—to the present day.
In particular, it stands out as a history of the United States seen through the eyes of Koreans, reading American history and our history together through the vivid stories of many people.
This book, written from the balanced perspective of a current teacher from the National History Teachers Association, will be a useful text for both students and beginners who want to learn about American history.

Publisher's Review
America, a 'salad of race and culture'

There are countless books that talk about America.
It provides information on travel destinations and universities, covers topics related to society, economy, and culture, and focuses on our relationship with them.
However, it is not easy to find a book that covers the entire history of the United States in an easy and fun way.
"A Brief History of the United States" stands out because it offers a quick overview of the process of America's formation and growth through the stories of the people who live there, rather than just the abstract political system it is.
By following the diverse stories of Asian Native Americans who followed the mammoths to America, European whites who migrated to pioneer new lands and live independently, African blacks who were forcibly relocated to cultivate those lands, and immigrants from all over the world who left their homelands to achieve the American Dream in the land of opportunity, you can see the history of the United States at a glance.

In this way, America was created through the heterogeneous cultures of immigrants of different races, ethnicities, and languages, and it is still a country where many people from all over the world gather.
America has gained universality through the process of diverse people and cultures influencing and merging within a single space called America.
“If it worked in America, it could work in the world.
“Both the German hamburger and the Italian pizza were popularized around the world through the United States.” The United States, a superpower, was possible because of the diversity of its immigrants.

A Balanced Perspective on American History from a Korean Perspective

"American History for Beginners" is a foreign history book for Koreans.
We have selected historical facts at a level that we absolutely need to know and organized them so that we can read them together with the world.
American history is divided into eight periods, and a chronology is provided at the beginning of each chapter and at the end of the book, allowing readers to simultaneously view American history, Korean history, and world history. This allows readers to understand the eras of American history, our history, and world history at the same time.
Since the Shinmiyangyo of 1871, we have maintained a close relationship with the United States throughout modern history.
In the Katsura-Taft Agreement, we saw a dualistic America, and in World War II and the Korean War, we relied on America's hand.
Since the Vietnam War, we have been sending our troops to serve the United States for over 40 years.
We either hate this America with fierce hatred or cheer it with fervent enthusiasm.
But we cannot understand America solely through blind, polarized assessments.

The America encountered in "American History for Beginners" was neither one-sided good nor evil.
As the 'first democratic republic' in human history, the United States is an ideal world that thinkers have only imagined in their minds.
American independence was even a revolution.
But for America to grow and expand, it took the blood, sweat, and sacrifice of many people.
Native Americans, who had lived in America for tens of thousands of years, had to be driven out, and black people, hunted like animals in their homelands, had to be loaded onto slave ships like luggage.
And while the superpower, the United States, spread its wings, civilians in the Philippines, Vietnam, Cuba, Iraq, and Afghanistan were killed.
To truly understand America, where different people, cultures, morals, and interests collide, accept, and balance one another, the balanced perspective presented in "American History for Beginners" is essential.

A story of American history that is easy to read and draws you in.

"American History for Beginners" vividly portrays the nitty-gritty inner thoughts of Americans.
This isn't a dry, boring explanation of America.
American history, written in dialogue and with specific scenes based on historical sources, is no longer a story of another country or the past.
It is as alive as the story of us living in Korea today.
Metacom, who struggled to protect his beloved family and home, Harriet Tubman, who risked her life to help black slaves escape, and the Haymarket protests that we commemorate on May Day.
As American history becomes our story, events, periods, people, and places that were once objects of memorization naturally come to mind.
As the author stated in the preface, “I want to tell the story of history vividly without losing the historical context,” readers can experience the same vividness as if they were visiting the historical site.

Additionally, 21 historical maps, including those of the American mission, help us understand time and space simultaneously.
We did not forget to pay close attention to the details, such as showing the natural environment and cultural relics along with an index map to help people understand the context.
And the visual aids, including 190 photographs, drawings, and illustrations, will make American history accessible through their depth and fun.

The National History Teachers Association's "World History for Beginners" series has been newly revised.

The 'First Reading of World History' series was planned with the aim of looking at world history through the 'eyes of Koreans', beyond the world history of 'Europe as the lead and China as a supporting role.'
Teachers from the National History Teachers Association selected five countries and began organizing their histories based on their field experience.
The books in this series cover each country's unique history, but they are written so that each country's history can be understood within the context of world history.
To help readers learn about major events, figures, and the historical significance of civilizations in world history, we've used timelines and maps to clearly connect the dots between the books in the series.
Another unique characteristic of this series is that it does not mechanically list political events in a chronological order, but vividly portrays the culture and history of the country.

Looking at the many reader reviews that poured in after the series was published in 2010, many praised the books, saying they chose them before traveling to Turkey, before going on a business trip to India, and before living in Japan to learn more about the country, and that the easy-to-read and three-dimensional descriptions led them to seek out and read books from other countries.
I hope that this series will continue to serve as a vivid introduction to the history of countries that cannot be fully understood through textbooks alone, or as an excellent guidebook for those planning a trip to those countries.
