The scent of China
The scent of China
Description
Book Introduction
"The Fragrance of China" is a book that was born from the author's process of organizing his own achievements.
After gathering together the writings scattered here and there, I found that there were surprisingly many unfinished manuscripts, and this book is a collection of short writings about China.
For the author, who majored in Korean classical Chinese literature, China was not just a country of laughter, but an object of longing, a place where the breath of Confucius, Mencius, Li Bai, and Du Fu still lives.
These writings, which record what I saw, heard, and felt during dozens of visits to China, remain as a fragrance imbued with my long-standing interest and affection.
So, the title of the book naturally became ‘The Fragrance of China.’

Publisher's Review
Part 1, “China’s Pronouncements,” was published in the monthly magazine 『Chindia Plus』, published by the POSCO Research Institute, from November 2015 to June 2016.
'Chindia' seems to be a combination of 'China' and 'India', and the articles were mainly about the economy related to China and India.
Part 2, ‘China’s Famous Families’, was serialized in 『Chindia Plus』 from the September/October 2016 issue to the July/August 2017 issue.
Part 3, “China’s Famous Places,” is a series of articles titled “China’s Geography” that was serialized once a month for one year from 2017 to 2018 in the daily newspaper “Asia Economy.” Part 4, “China’s Lessons,” is a series of articles that was serialized from June 1998 to December 2000 in the monthly “Sungkyunkwan Newsletter” published by the Sungkyunkwan University Alumni Association.

Part 5 is the oldest article, published twice a week in the daily Munhwa Ilbo from August 1995 to October 1995 under the name “Chinese Character Classroom.”
“Universities and University Students in China,” included as an appendix, is a record of what I saw and heard while staying as a research professor at Beijing Normal University in China from February to August 1993.
Due to China's rapid changes, the reality of Chinese universities and students today is very different from this article, but it will serve as a small record that testifies to the reality of 1993.
Although written in different times and contexts, these writings consistently reflect the author's deep understanding and affection for China.
