Description
Book Introduction
The purpose of this book is to cover the 『Independence Newspaper』 and the 『Independence Association』.
In 『Making Koreans III: Pro-American Christian Faction 1』, we looked at how Protestant missionaries changed Joseon. This time, we trace the process by which Seo Jae-pil and Yun Chi-ho, who went to the United States after the failure of the Gapsin Coup (1884), returned to Korea 10 years later with the Gabo Reform (1894-1895) and resumed their activities.
The ten years that Seo Jae-pil and Yun Chi-ho were in exile overseas were the period when Protestant missionaries began to change Joseon from the bottom up.
The period in which Christian missionaries successfully converted countless people through missionary work and nurtured talents like Syngman Rhee and Ju Si-kyung coincides precisely with the period in which Korea's greatest reformist intellectuals and politicians studied in the United States and returned.
What they created together was Joseon's first private newspaper, the Independent Newspaper, and Joseon's first civic organization, the Independence Association.
