5 Japanese Cultures That Look Different When You Know Them
Description
Book Introduction
Through private exchanges between Korea and Japan
Empathy and understanding
The fifth installment of "Japanese Culture: A Different Perspective When You Know It," a steady seller in the field of Japanese cultural studies that has been beloved by readers since its first volume was published in 2021, has been published.
The series "Japanese Culture: A Different Perspective When You Know It" is praised for approaching Japanese culture from diverse and three-dimensional perspectives without bias or distortion, with both Korean and Japanese authors participating.
This book introduces interesting Japanese culture that was not covered in the previous series, such as Tottori Prefecture, famous for its unique natural landscape of coastal sand dunes; Miyazaki's San Messe Nichinan, where you can see replicas of the Moai statues from Chile's Easter Island, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; Tokyo's "Antenna Shop", where you can travel all over Japan in one place; and Japan's "social baseball" and city team competitions, which drew attention at the 2006 Doha Asian Games in Qatar.
This dark tour explores the dark history shared between Korea and Japan, including the five palaces that endured all kinds of hardships during the Japanese colonial period and the Korean youths who volunteered as prisoner guards (military personnel) in the war waged by Japan and ended up as Class B and C war criminals. However, it also emphasizes that in future Korea-Japan relations, it is most important to empathize and understand each other's cultures through civilian exchanges.

Into the book
The characteristic of Volume 5 seems to be that it is appropriate to say that it thinks about our culture through Japanese culture.
As one of the main authors and a professor who has taught students in the Department of Japanese Studies at Korea National Open University for a long time, I have always wanted to introduce Japan to Koreans so that they can properly understand it, and to naturally show Japanese people the true charm of Korea.
I thought that if Koreans and Japanese people participated as writers together, we would be able to look at Japan from different perspectives.
To achieve this, we created an academic society called the East Asia Love Room Forum, and based on the research and discussions conducted at that society, we published the book “Japanese Culture: A Different Perspective When You Know It.”
This book contains academic and professional content, but it also includes many articles on everyday life and culture, and we have received a lot of feedback that it was helpful in learning about various aspects of Japan.

When the national team, which consisted of a star-studded lineup of professional players including Lee Dae-ho, Ryu Hyun-jin, and Oh Seung-hwan, lost to a Japanese team comprised mostly of amateur players in the semifinals of the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha, Qatar, the media unanimously reported it as the "Doha Disaster," and some even called it the greatest humiliating incident in Korean baseball history.
There was even a lot of fake news circulating on the Internet that the Japanese player who hit the game-winning home run was an 'oden fish cake vendor' and that the team members' occupations were rickshaw pullers and truck drivers. However, few people knew that later, eight of these Japanese national team players wore professional uniforms and that the 'oden vendor' joined the prestigious Yomiuri Giants, won Rookie of the Year that year and went on to win the league batting title the following year.
At that time, he was a college student, but later he played for the Honda Motor Company's social team for three years, and his name was Hisayoshi Jono (played for the Yomiuri Giants and Hiroshima Toyo Carp for 15 seasons from 2010 to 2024, and played in 1,634 games, had 1,509 hits, 163 home runs, and had a batting average of .280).

On August 15, 1945, Korea was liberated.
But the young men who became war criminals did not return.
The novel "The Narrow Road to the Far North" features Choi Chang-min, a Korean man sentenced to death.
Nicknamed 'The Lizard', he stood before the executioner, burdened with the crime of cruelly treating Allied prisoners.
As he faces death, he asks himself why he must die.
The Japanese officer shouts "Long live His Majesty the Emperor" and falls to the scaffold.
On the other hand, he has neither given nor received anything from his country.
There is no homeland to shout out for.
My heart aches when I think of parents who will learn of their child's death.
He thinks he might be dying because of the 50 yen salary he gets every month.
Why did he, a non-Japanese colonial subject, have to die as a war criminal in a war waged by Japan?

One of the most popular places to visit in Tottori is undoubtedly the sand dunes.
I lived in Tottori Prefecture for four years and have been there countless times. In fact, every time I visited, I was so impressed by the sand dunes that I found myself wondering if I was really in Japan.
If you brave the slight pain of sinking in and climb to the top of the sand dunes, you'll be rewarded with a sense of freedom and even a moment of reflection as you gaze out across the boundless East Sea. The sand dunes of Tottori Prefecture are a place where you can indulge in a little meditation.
Tottori Prefecture's sand dunes stretch 2.4 kilometers from north to south and 16 kilometers from east to west, making them the largest in Japan. While in Japan, you can experience a foreign country for a brief moment, and even experience camel riding.
But the most exciting experience for both adults and children is sandboarding, which involves sledding down a sand dune.

'Four people and a dog' is an expression of an hour-long observation of the downtown area of Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture on a Sunday in 1970.
How deserted must a city be for it to have declined to the point where only four people and a dog can walk an hour? It's astonishing that Nagahama, once so deserted that such remarks were made, has become a successful example of urban regeneration, attracting benchmarking from other cities and even overseas.
What changes took place in Nagahama that led to its emergence as a city visited by 2 million people annually?
---From "Successful Cases of Urban Regeneration Using Software"
Easter Island is a national park in Chile and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In particular, because the Moai statues played such an important role in being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Chilean government does not officially allow other countries to make copies.
When I told him that there was no way there could be copies in other countries, he showed me a pamphlet as proof.
The pamphlet contained a photo of a perfect replica.
Seven life-size Moai statues from Easter Island were officially licensed by the Chilean government to be located in San Messe Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan.
The Chilean guide to Easter Island never mentioned it, and even when I asked the Japanese people living in Miyazaki Prefecture, they had no idea.
What is the connection between these two countries, whose connection doesn't immediately come to mind?
