Discovery of Novels Vol. 14 [2025]
Description
Book Introduction
"Discovery of Novels" is a series of hidden novels by Verité that rediscovers and reinterprets the disjointed positions between writers and readers, novels and the world.
The publication cycle is uniquely three times a year: spring, late summer, and winter.
The authors of this 14th issue are novelists Gilran, Jinho Park, and Sangha Lee, who debuted in the 2025 New Year's Literary Contest.
Novelist Gilan debuted this year with the novel “The Blessed Ones” in the Hankook Ilbo New Year’s Literary Contest.
The novel "That Woman," published in this magazine, is the story of a protagonist who views her coworkers with complex perspectives.
The protagonist appears to be revealing his inner self in a calm and honest manner while gossiping about 'Yeon', but in reality, the truth is not like that, so he is closer to being an 'unreliable narrator'.
If you can sense the everyday tensions and subtle cracks embedded in the narrative, you might also notice the anxiety of another "that kind of woman" who labels someone else as "that kind of woman."
Novelist Jin-ho Park debuted this year with the novel “A Certain Truth” in the Dong-A Ilbo New Year’s Literary Contest.
The novel 『Ikmong』 published in this magazine is a combination of the words ‘Ikmong’ (to fall into) and ‘Mongmong’ (to dream). It is a story about the daily life of a family struggling in a dream rather than water.
The speaker's mother and father have almost opposite values and perspectives, but they are somewhat irrational and make choices that gradually worsen their lives, giving the speaker a similar sense of frustration.
But why is it that rather than simply hating or blaming, I feel drawn to this moderate foolishness?
Novelist Lee Sang-ha debuted this year with the novel “Beware of Chinchilla Treatment” in the Munhwa Ilbo New Year’s Literary Contest.
The novel "Pachira and the Carrot," published in this magazine, is a sensuous work that subtly reveals the dissonance between the younger generation and this era.
The novel shows the helplessness felt by a young man who is resting, a so-called kangaroo tribe, in the relationship between a family that hurts and loves each other.
In this way, it can be said to be a story that is clearly necessary in this era, in that it talks about social phenomena without simply blaming them on individual faults and shortcomings.

Into the book
“There are women like that.”
I lay in bed and said.
My husband lay straight next to me and listened to what I said.
“A woman who really likes men.
She's just that kind of woman.
“I heard they call it a South American bird these days?”
--- p.7
“Sir, did I do something wrong?”
I looked at the kite.
Yeon didn't look at me.
I was still just looking at the snowflakes falling from the sky.
“What did Yeon do wrong?
It's just my problem.
“I… … am married.”
--- p.26
My mother, who said she would be back soon, didn't show up, and in the meantime, the woman was gradually distancing herself from me.
He seemed to want to leave quickly.
I told her to wait and see her mother's face before she left, but the woman stubbornly waved her hand and smiled faintly through her mask.
I had no choice but to hand the P Bakery bag I was holding to the woman.
--- p.38
It seemed like everything would fit together, but it didn't quite work out.
Thin envelope.
One of the few bakeries in Seoul.
A woman who picked out bread with her son.
The right side of my neck felt stiff.
This unease was a deception, then shame, then shamelessness, then regret, and I floundered, unable to rise or fall, unable to decide on a clear direction.
--- p.67
Minju waved her hand.
He said he wouldn't do it even if I gave him a hundred dollars because he didn't want to deceive his friend's older sister.
I replied that I was not lying and that I just needed to act as a blog neighbor.
Minju, who had been staring at me, opened her mouth.
“Even at your age, you still waste money.”
--- p.71
After changing to Kangaroo14, I read the conversation.
Someone said that they are wearing earphones now because they don't have the energy to go out even though they don't want to hear their parents complaining. Another person said that they are almost 40 but are still receiving allowances, let alone giving them one.
Vegetable emoticons appeared between conversations.
Kangaroo8 sent two ten thousand won bills.
He said that it was money he received thanks to having bought tickets for a trot singer's concert.
Suddenly, several emoticons appeared in the chat room.
Cucumbers, eggplants, apples, blueberries, and even flowers.
Everyone was responding to the kangaroo's words with an emoticon, as if they were feeding him something delicious.
