Barrier-free travel throughout Korea
Description
Book Introduction
Everyone has different reasons for traveling, but for vulnerable travelers such as babies in strollers, seniors with knee problems, and people with disabilities, additional elements of 'accessibility' and 'diversity' are needed.
Travel has become a modern person's dream. While there are many travel books, few books observe travel destinations from the perspective of people with disabilities.
A wheelchair traveler personally visited and wrote about famous domestic tourist destinations.
We carefully check whether the area is suitable for small two-wheeled vehicles, where to rest and stay, and where accessible restrooms are located to provide the optimal travel route for tourists with disabilities.
Author Jeon Yun-seon, known as the 'Hanbiya of the disabled world', became known for her travels around the world in a wheelchair.
She shares her travel stories with the world through broadcasts, columns, and lectures.
Last year, the book "39 Beautiful Barrier-Free Travel Destinations Across Our Country," which won the 10th Brunch Special Award, was published and received a warm response from readers. In particular, those who use wheelchairs, as well as those with companions, welcomed the book, describing it as an oasis in the desert. Furthermore, some praised the book for demonstrating the potential for "barrier-free travel" to develop into a genre of travel literature.
This book introduces 30 gem-like domestic barrier-free travel destinations that were not included in the '39 Barrier-Free Travel Destinations' but that we really wanted to introduce.

Into the book
The physical accessibility of Seodaemun Prison is continuously improving.
Just a few years ago, you had to tour the prison buildings from the outside, but now about 70% of the buildings have accessible ramps, allowing anyone to enter the buildings.
The older the building, the more difficult it is to expand accessibility.
Accessibility has improved tremendously compared to before.
--- p.36 From “Seoul Dark Tour, History to Remember”
The training ground is a wide, flat area where you can shoot arrows and fly kites, so even I, in a wheelchair, can do it without any worries.
When I travel, I mainly use an electric wheelchair.
Power wheelchairs require minimal or sometimes no assistance from others.
Moreover, it allows for active and independent travel, allowing you to easily climb steep slopes without assistance.
No, rather, it is to the extent that we should be considerate of the walking speed of our non-disabled companions.
Of course, travelers using manual wheelchairs will definitely need the assistance of a companion when climbing steep castle walls.
--- p.65 From “A building that is truly beautiful when viewed from afar and up close”
Sometimes in life, the perfect day comes, or we want to create it.
Whether it's doing well on a test or being recognized by someone you like, there are days in life that are like twinkling stars.
A perfect day for me is when I can get a taxi straight away (p. disabled call taxi), when the bathroom is large enough and wheelchair accessible, when the restaurant I want has a ramp and automatic doors, and when I am treated as a customer and receive adequate service.
I met such a day on the street of Incheon Port.
The Cheonjiin Port Street is a place where all the desired travel destinations are gathered and accessible.
So it became the perfect day I wanted.
--- p.117 From “How to Spend a Perfect Day in Incheon”
The scent of coffee is carried by the wind and stimulates the tip of my nose.
The sea and coffee, rain and coffee, wind and coffee, the three beats are in perfect harmony. Just as each moment is different, the taste and aroma of coffee are also different.
Normally I would be reluctant to drink coffee because of the bathroom, but at Anmok Beach, I don't have to.
This is because it has been developed into an open tourist attraction and has convenient facilities such as disabled restrooms and accessible cafes.
And that's not all.
There is also a rapid charger installed, so there is no need to worry about the wheelchair battery.
--- p.135 From “The Scent of Coffee Resembling the Sea”
Solhyanggi Campground, located on Yeongok Beach, also operates a 'water wheelchair experience program for the physically challenged' during the summer vacation season.
Palm mats are laid out on the sandy beach, allowing access to the water, and water wheelchairs are available for entry into the sea.
In addition, safety personnel and support staff are on hand to ensure maximum safety.
After swimming, you can worry less about showering.
A fully equipped shower room makes a trip to the sun-drenched beach more enjoyable.
--- p.143 From “Summertime at a Barrier-Free Campground”
Professor Yoo Hong-jun, author of “My Cultural Heritage Tour,” says that he visits a place repeatedly to write a book.
I'm no different.
First, data is collected and routes are checked to monitor tourist resources and accessibility.
On the second and Nth visits, check again to see if there have been any changes and reorganize the route.
Based on the results of travel destination monitoring, we must file complaints with local governments, publicize them through the media and social media, shape public opinion, and do a lot of work to improve the system. Only then will we see changes, albeit very slowly, toward barrier-free travel destinations.
Still, holes are visible here and there.
Barrier-free travel activities must continue until the day when communication flows naturally, like water without barriers.
--- p.199 From “Riding Hot Spots from Gongjicheon to Gangchon Station”
Museum Mountain is a museum located on top of a mountain.
Museum San, which embraces visitors like a mountain, is also a travel destination that is well-suited to wheelchair travelers.
Museum Mountain is a place where you can spend the whole day, where nature, culture, and travel coexist.
That's why I keep wanting to go and stay for a long time.
--- p.211 From "I Want to Go There, 'Museum Mountain'"
I, in a wheelchair, ordered spicy stir-fried chicken with sweet peppers.
The tables here were not low, so they were comfortable to use.
This is my first time eating spicy stir-fried chicken with chili peppers.
The taste is pretty good.
It tastes somewhere between Andong Jjimdak and Dakbokkeumtang.
I felt like the spicy stir-fried chicken was a little lacking, so I went to the next-door Seonbong Noodle House and ordered some spicy stir-fried noodles with green onion oil and rich anchovy noodles. They even brought them to my next-door neighbor! The combination of spicy stir-fried chicken with chili peppers and noodles is so delicious that it could be considered a national dish.
No, in my mind it has already become a ‘national rule’.
--- p.218 From “Hot travel destinations where taste and ‘geumsang’ are alive”
I was surprised to see that there was a barrier-free playground right next door.
There is a merry-go-round that even children in wheelchairs can ride, so all children can play together.
It was heartwarming to see all the children playing together.
There needs to be more accessible play equipment so that children can grow up without prejudice.
There's another amazing ride right next door.
This is a swing that disabled children and their mothers can ride together.
It's rare to ride a swing with your mother, so I asked my colleague who went with me to try it out.
With accessible play equipment available in playgrounds across the country, children in wheelchairs can also have fun at the playground.
--- p.239 From “Baekje’s Dream, Iksan Royal Palace Jewelry Theme Tourist Site”
The reason why you can eat to your heart's content at Nambu Market is because there are accessible restrooms next to the market parking lot and many restaurants with no barriers.
To add to that, it is because the attitude towards disabled guests is without prejudice.
Not having to worry about fulfilling your primal instincts of eating and excreting means that your dignity as a human being is preserved.
If you always do well, you won't know how to respond when you do poorly.
People with disabilities also need to experience failure to find ways to do better.
The same goes for barrier-free travel.
It is important to set out on the path even if you fail, because you can't know until you try.

Publisher's Review
We've selected barrier-free travel destinations in Korea, hoping everyone can easily set out on the road with their baby in a stroller, hold hands with a parent with sore knees, or explore famous landmarks across the country in a wheelchair.
This book prioritizes locations established as open tourist destinations. Open tourist destinations are barrier-free tourist destinations that began development in 2015. Currently, there are 182 such sites nationwide, including two in cities. The author has confirmed that while open tourist destinations are relatively more accessible than general tourist destinations, they are not completely open. However, this book only confirms that steps are being taken toward this goal. It's also important to note that local governments are also recognizing the right of everyone to travel and are actively creating an environment where everyone can enjoy it.
For travelers who cannot take a single step without an electric wheelchair, barrier-free travel means being able to leave on a whim, anytime, anywhere, and that travel can be a journey without obstacles.
Knowing that the more travelers use wheelchairs, the better the infrastructure for accessible travel will become, the author views the future of "accessibility" with a perspective as low as the height of electric wheelchairs.
