Dreaming of restorative justice manifesting in everyday life at school.

The global pandemic caused by COVID-19 has shifted our lives from a relationship-centered one to one of disconnection and non-face-to-face interaction. The lack of a sense of community that fosters reciprocity is fueling conflicts in schools, such as school violence and violations of teachers' authority, which have recently become issues.
However, the school's problem-solving approach fails to overcome the limitations of the existing retributive justice approach, which only deals with punishment commensurate with the wrongdoing.
Even today, schools are not even aware of the problem of the judicialization of schools, which has rapidly infiltrated the classroom, and are unable to present alternatives.
The judicialization of schools threatens the relationships between teachers, students, and parents, as well as the safety of classrooms, and poses a major obstacle to the future of education.
The era of crisis in schools has arrived.


Restorative justice states that 'a wrong produces harm before it produces punishment.
And it teaches that 'repairing that damage is the true responsibility.'
Restorative justice education is a restorative justice practice applied in educational settings.
As the term “restorative life education” was introduced and spread to schools, restorative life education has become part of the educational policies of provincial and municipal offices of education across the country.
The number of teachers receiving training in restorative living education is increasing, driven by personal interest or policy support from the Office of Education.
However, in schools, restorative life education is still largely perceived as a program that stimulates students' interest or as a methodology to supplement teachers' guidance.
It is regrettable that the understanding of restorative life education has spread to the extent that it is a program that merely improves the classroom atmosphere without any fundamental consideration of the educational paradigm.


This time, Peace Building Publishing published a new book titled “Building a Restorative School with Restorative Life Education.”
This book introduces the philosophy and values ​​of the restorative justice paradigm, which is the philosophy of restorative life education, and the story of a restorative school that changed its school culture through restorative life education. The ultimate goal of restorative life education is to create a restorative culture in schools.
The author offers a progressive imagination for the revitalization of restorative life education as an educational movement, focusing on creating a restorative school culture that can restore the functions of the school community and the role of education beyond the current judicialized school problem-solving method, and for the formation of communities and restoration of relationships necessary in the school field.

Establishing a Restorative School Culture by Shifting the Restorative Life Education Paradigm

This book contains information about the 'process' of creating a restorative school.
A “restorative school” is a school that operates as an integrated school system in which members of the school community practice restorative life education at the class, grade, and school level.
In the practice of making our school a restorative school, understanding the philosophy of restorative justice and restorative life education is very important.
This book is a comprehensive approach to building a restorative school culture, and is a guide for teachers who seek to establish a restorative school and lay the foundation for educational direction and practice through restorative life education.


In order to create a restorative school, it is very important to first and foremost share and create the basic philosophy of restorative justice among members of the school community.
Rather than making big changes from the beginning, we need to think about and implement them together with fellow teachers who want to start with what they can.
Based on the case of restorative schools, it introduces the process of creating restorative schools and provides guidance on how to create a restorative school culture tailored to the characteristics of each school. Furthermore, it contains effective methods for activating restorative life education in schools and for operating and activating school violence conflict mediation, which is required in conjunction with the recent revision of the School Violence Prevention Act.
