Description
Book Introduction
Aging in a fun, simple, and comfortable way, 'my way'

★★★
Sparkling messages from nine female writers embracing aging.

“Curiosity is a skill that can be developed with practice.
“I want to hold on to curiosity until it becomes second nature.” - Essayist Kim Hana

“Studying is the process of letting go of what you know.
“This realization has been a comfort to me for many years.” - Jeong Hee-jin, feminist scholar

“I will renew my will and live long
“I want to see the world change.” - Go Geum-suk, CEO of Almang Store

Everyone ages at least one year a year.
In a Korean society obsessed with slow aging, how do we perceive "aging"? Perhaps we're so eager to avoid the wrinkles in the mirror and fear being marginalized after retirement that we fail to see the signs in the world that allow us to embrace "aging" positively. Perhaps we're not sending such signals to each other.

Growing old is a phenomenon that applies to all humans.
It's normal to feel anxious about whether you're aging well or wondering how everyone is preparing for middle age and old age.
While the hardships of aging are inevitable, frailty isn't the be-all and end-all of getting older.
We need opportunities to encounter the concrete faces of aging people.
It is a time to glimpse the days of life growing old happily, modestly, comfortably, and ‘in my own way.’

Nine writers—essayist Kim Ha-na, feminist Jeong Hee-jin, musician Song Eun-hye, art sociologist Lee Ra-young, nonfiction writer Kim Hee-kyung, obstetrician and gynecologist Yoon Jeong-won, translator Jeong Su-yoon, Almang Store CEO Go Geum-sook, and botanist Shin Hye-woo—send sparkling messages to readers about how they are enjoying aging from their own perspectives.
Through writers who live deeply and richly today, we will be able to sense the meaning of life and aging in many layers.

Into the book
These days I practice crossover turns.
This is a technique used when entering the swim with backstroke and exiting with breaststroke.
Enter the pool looking at the ceiling, then when your hands touch the wall, lift your legs toward the sky and kick off the wall.
It's been a while since I've tried, but now I know that if you practice a little bit every day, you'll be able to do anything.
I'm happy that I'm in my mid-forties and still have new things to learn.
I have faith that what I couldn't do yesterday I can do today, and what I can't do today I will be able to do tomorrow.
Learning is always such an exciting thing, not just in swimming but in everything in life.
--- p.20 From "Jeong Su-yoon, Time to Become a Fish"

To know who I am, I need to listen to my inner voice, but I also need to give myself various opportunities.
I practice keeping myself open.
As much as I am curious about the world, the world will give me new experiences.
It's a mental stretch.
As I gain new experiences, I will become more flexible.

--- p.53 From "Kim Hana, Honing Curiosity"

At the funeral, I'd like to have attendees read letters written for me, and I'd like to see a documentary called "The Trash Nerd Social Club" in which I star.
Whether it's manly or not, it's something that gives self-consciousness a 'shoulder pat' on the back for that day.
For funeral background music, there are Chopin, Vampire Weekend, Broccoli You Too… … .
If you write it down carefully, you will reach a point where you won't know whether it is a funeral or an 80th birthday party.

--- p.67 From “Goh Geum-suk, A New Resolution to Die Every Year”

There were times when I felt a sense of loss, not having a soulmate or confidant, but what can I do, my friendships aren't directed towards just one person?
I think that, unlike family or spouses, friends are a free relationship without exclusivity, which is a great characteristic and advantage.
No matter how good a friend is, one friend can only meet one side of me.
I want to surround myself with a diverse network of friendships that have so many lights.

Publisher's Review
“I enjoy the fact that there are still new things to learn.”
From the age of 40 to 60, a life that deepens and enriches
- Stories to share on your own journey to aging well.

Female writers with an average age of 48, ranging from those born in 1985, who are approaching their 40s, to those born in 1967, who are approaching their 60s, gathered together to discuss the topic of 'aging.'
Just as our life paths have been different so far, the things we do for old age or the attitudes we try to adopt in life are also diverse.

Kim Ha-na, who is honing her curiosity; Jeong Hee-jin, who wants to become a craftsman like fishermen, miners, and farmers; Go Geum-sook, who renews her will on New Year's Day; Shin Hye-woo, who started a project to return the love she received to the next person; and Lee Ra-young, who records the voices of people who disappear in ordinary ways.

Yoon Jeong-won, who speaks and caresses her body because desire, sex, and pain are not shameful; Song Eun-hye, who is reborn every day through music practice that confronts her vulnerable self; Jeong Su-yoon, who does the best thing a human can do for his body by swimming; Kim Hee-kyung, who finds a balance between being alone and together by walking in the forest every day.

In "We, Aging Beings," you can find the healthy wisdom of those who cultivate their day and reflect on aging right here and now.
Through the diverse perspectives of these artists, who create beautiful wrinkles, you can ponder the questions, "What does aging mean to me? How can I age well?" and create your own unique daily life.

Not tomorrow, but today,
We are becoming better adults for each other.
- May we be able to sense aging as connected beings.
- May we become happy old people to each other.

There's a lot of talk about how much you should save for your financial portfolio in retirement, but that's not the whole story of "aging well."
As we increase the number of stories about middle-aged and elderly people, won't we become a society where we're more likely to encounter more respectable adults and welcoming elders? As we enter a super-aged society in 2025, and encountering the term "age-related society" in the media is a familiar sight, this is why we need to talk more about aging.

Encountering the concrete faces of those who are aging is one way we create moments where we accept older people as connected beings, not as otherized beings.
Readers who are aging together and in their own ways will be able to experience through "We, Aging Beings" that the newness of each day still awaits us.
I hope that everyone who reads this book will discover something precious in their own lives and feel the aging process, so that we can become better adults for one another.
