Book Introduction
The first essay by Bang Gu-seok, a popular Instatoon artist with 150,000 followers.

Let's go out and find some fun today!
A feast of hobby bragging in the corner of a professional hobbyist's room

The comic essay "Hobbies Will Save Us" by Bang Gu-seok, a writer who has received love from 150,000 followers for his witty Instatoon, has been published, featuring his diverse hobbies.
He begins his life simply for fun and continues it as a habit, and he tells the story of how his various hobbies have changed every corner of his life and 'saved' him, in a humorous yet serious tone.

From hobbies familiar to many, such as reading, watching movies, running, and growing plants, to hobbies that make you wonder, "Can this even be called a hobby?" such as shaving and drawing maps, and even life-changing activities like drawing and creating content, the author experiences countless hobbies firsthand and comes to a realization.
Having a hobby means expanding your interests, and the more interests you have, the clearer your view of the world becomes. The more hobbies you have, the higher the resolution of the surrounding scenery becomes, and the richer the world becomes with things to see.

Simple and ordinary, yet so relatable, as you follow the characters' every move, sometimes giggling and sometimes nodding with intense empathy, you'll find yourself turning the pages, before you know it, deciding to take up a new hobby this year.
Let's discover the new charm of Banggu Seok, a writer not seen on Instagram, through the world of hobbies.

Into the book
There is no need to compete with others, and there is no pressure to do well.
If I enjoy it, it's just a hobby.
Since then, I have been collecting things that look interesting without hesitation as a hobby.
The hobbies I collected one by one breathed life into my boring daily life and even changed my entire life.
Maybe hobbies that are just for fun will save us.

When you see the subtle changes in temperature and humidity with your own eyes, you can feel the difference on your skin.
The air feels different and the sensation of inhaling is different.
Depending on the temperature and humidity, your mood and physical condition also change slightly.
There is also a difference in concentration when working.
You have become sensitive to your surroundings.
You studied and worked hard to grow plants well, but you were so indifferent to me.
I bought a hygrometer to care for my plants, but it ended up looking back at me instead.
Let sunlight into the space, ventilate frequently, turn on a humidifier, and adjust the temperature.
These efforts were beneficial not only to the plants but also to me.
As you grow plants, you also take care of yourself.

“Relax.” It’s something we hear tirelessly whenever we start something new.
I take a deep breath and try to relax my body, as if my soul is about to leave, but I quickly regain my strength.
The more you struggle to release the strength, the more strength you use.
How on earth do you lose strength?
When the teacher's words to relax sound irresponsible and even annoying, I feel myself gradually losing strength.
Perhaps letting go of strength is a state that only those who have given strength, given strength again, and given it all the way to the end can reach.

When I tell friends and acquaintances that I swim every morning, they look at me in two ways.
'Honest person' or 'leisurely person'.
In fact, I am a bit embarrassed because I am neither sincere nor idle.
I just go to the pool in the morning because I have a lot of work or appointments in the evening.
(Omitted) When I finish talking about swimming and say that I go running in the evening, two perspectives merge into one.
‘Ah… what a leisurely and sincere person.’ A leisurely and sincere person.
I would like to live that kind of life.

When I talk about movies, I often encounter people who pay close attention to parts I never paid attention to and then tell their own stories.
In a way, it's natural, but it's interesting that the parts we focus on change depending on our interests.
After having such a conversation, I watch the movie, focusing especially on the parts that the other person said.
It's a movie I clearly know, but it seems like a completely different movie.
As your tastes become richer, movies become deeper and broader.

It's funny how it all started with an independent publishing workshop I went to just because it seemed fun.
The snowball of small curiosity rolled and rolled, flowing in an unexpected direction and bringing about unexpected results.
I'm looking forward to what fun things will happen next and rolling small snowballs as a new hobby.

Publisher's Review
My father said, enjoy life.

Are you living happily now?
Filling everyday life with fun through hobbies
A life of exploring hobbies in the corner of the room

There are two kinds of people in the world.
People who hesitate when asked, “What are your hobbies?” because they don’t have anything they can call a hobby, and people who struggle to decide which of the many hobbies that immediately come to mind to name first.
The writer's corner overwhelmingly belongs to the latter.
I am a self-proclaimed hobby hunter and a hobby addict, and I have over a dozen hobbies, or at least dozens of them if you count the ones I have tried out of curiosity.

Of course, he wasn't a hobbyist from the beginning.
He, too, had spent a long time without any particular hobbies and lived a colorless and odorless life. Whenever hobbies came up as a topic of conversation, he would often choose his words with a strange sense of burden, feeling the pressure to be better and know more than others, and would often end up blurting out the words.
Then, by chance, he realized that the true meaning of a hobby is 'something done for fun, not professionally', and from that moment on, he decided to step into the world of hobbies to make his life and daily life more fun.

It started out as fun, but it got serious.
Because every hobby has life in it.

Since it is a hobby that started simply to have fun, the author is not bound by anything and expands the world of the hobby by following the fun.
You start reading because you see an old gentleman reading a book on the subway and he looks cool. You start running along the river near your house because you want to become a great writer like Haruki Murakami. You sign up for an early morning class at the swimming pool to realize your dream of becoming a digital nomad, working and relaxing at a resort while wearing a swimsuit and holding a laptop in one hand.

Although the trigger may be trivial, once you start a hobby, you will never give it up in vain.
Swimming, which started with learning how to breathe in a children's lane where the water was barely thigh-deep, has now reached the point where he enjoys swimming at speed while wearing flippers (in the pool, flippers are only allowed for intermediate and above level swimmers). He also constantly checks the thermo-hygrometer to save plants that are dying from excessive affection (watering) and calculates the angle of sunlight coming through the window.

Because this is something I do solely for my own enjoyment, not something I am forced to do or told to do, I can take a break when I lose interest, give up without hesitation, or find a new way.
I prioritize my own tastes over famous classics or recommended books, and when my running record isn't improving, I try changing the place I run.
It's also fun to get your gear up by buying new swimsuits and sprayers.
If you can't do it, if you fail, if you fail, if you are clumsy, if you try hard, you will continue to enjoy your hobby step by step, even through trial and error, until you suddenly realize something.
The fact that every hobby has a little bit of life in it.

Watching my plants wither from overwatering taught me that too much affection can be toxic, and when my swimming skills didn't seem to improve at all, I rewatched the beginner's video lesson and was reminded that the basics are the most important.
I must be able to let go of the weight I've built up in my desire to do well in order to move forward, and I must remember that the only right answer is to keep going even if you're not satisfied with the results.

Everyone has a hobby, but I don't, I'm the only one!
If you're looking for a new hobby for the new year, this is the book for you.

As you freely float through the universe of hobbies, following the writer Bang Gu-seok, an expert in exploring fun, turning even the trivial daily tasks that were once boring and bothersome into hobbies, you will naturally find yourself thinking, "Should I try a new hobby this year?"
How about taking advantage of his positive and active energy and pursuing healthy joy to make your daily life more productive?

The year 2024 has dawned.
We still have to go to work, study, and do things we don't want to do to make a living and continue our daily lives.
In such a dull and boring daily life, the only thing that can bring us a moment of joy, satisfaction, and sometimes even a small sense of accomplishment is a hobby.
If you've been putting off pursuing a hobby with excuses like lack of time, lack of money, or lack of confidence, now that the new year has become a stepping stone, follow the lead of Banggu Seok and try something new.
Maybe, really, hobbies will save us.
