Description
Book Introduction
Introduced for the first time in Korea,
Meet the essence of Lloyd Jones's later preaching ministry!
This is a series of sermons delivered by Martin Lloyd-Jones, the greatest preacher of the 20th century, on 32 Sunday mornings at Westminster Chapel from October 1962 to June 1963, using John 1 as the main text.
『Commentary on John 1』, introduced for the first time in Korea, is a work that allows us to examine the true nature of his later preaching ministry.
Lloyd-Jones provides a masterful and thorough analysis that focuses on two crucial areas of John 1: the role and relationship between law and grace, and the assurance of salvation.
These 32 sermons, which at first glance appear to be limited to John 1, connect numerous passages from the Old and New Testaments to clarify and enrich the content, ultimately connect to the great teachings of the entire Bible.
This is a story about the life enjoyed by those who have become children of God through faith.
Lloyd Jones clearly shows how Christians can apply the teachings of the Bible to their lives in this world.
This book is a comforting and challenging book for many Christians who are struggling to live as children of God, so that they can correctly diagnose their problems and live a powerful life through the life that comes from Jesus Christ.

Into the book
Our problem is that we want to be cured too quickly and easily, and that we try to solve things too hastily.
Don't try to ease your burden and find comfort as quickly as possible! The problem is replacing true faith with easy faith, rushing to grace before the law even begins to work.
We want to be free from the law as soon as possible.
I want to actively present Christ.
I want to run straight to the gospel.
I don't want to go through the introduction.
So in the end, you don't get the gospel.
Don't do that! There is only one way to know and appreciate the true value of God's grace in Jesus Christ: to understand the depths of sin exposed by the Law given through Moses.
So let's examine ourselves.
---「Chapter 3.
From “The Relationship Between Law and Grace”
The ceremonial law is both full grace and part of the law.
This is why the attitude of viewing law and grace as opposing each other is wrong.
There is grace in the law.
The law shows the need for grace.
This is one message the law conveys.
It is interesting to consider how the children of Israel learned and were reminded through all these rituals that they were dependent on God's grace.
God gave us commandments and commanded us to keep them.
And at the same time, “Now, you will not be able to keep these commandments.
So he said, “I have prepared this,” and gave them detailed instructions for performing it.
In this way, the element of grace was already included in the law.
---「Chapter 8.
From “The True Essence of the Law (2)”
Imagine two lines.
One is a line that depicts the basic life of moral people.
When we make a special resolution, become ill, or witness someone's death, we briefly calm ourselves down and rise above the baseline, but it soon returns to where it was before.
This is the life course of moral people.
It goes up a little and then falls again, repeating.
Their baseline is always below.
So what about Christians? What is their life path? Their baseline is above.
Sometimes it falls down, but it turns back and goes up again to maintain the baseline.
There is a difference between trying to climb up the line that is already below and occasionally falling down while following the line that the Son of God has set high.
---「Chapter 17.
From “Our Relationship with the Father”
“Now, there is one reason why you have become such fruitless Christians.
It is because we have not made the effort to equip ourselves with the things necessary for faith.” We cannot sit still and wait for the fruit to come by itself.
Because we wait like that our whole lives, nothing changes even after 20 or 30 years.
The problem is that we think we need new experiences.
What you need is not a new experience.
What you need is to come to your senses, steel your heart, and work hard to build your faith.

Publisher's Review
Introduced for the first time in Korea,
Meet the essence of Lloyd Jones's later preaching ministry!
Lloyd Jones's "Born of God" revisited with a new cover
-Recommended by Park Young-don, Park Young-sun, Son Hee-young, Lee Chan-soo, Kim Seo-taek, Ryu Eung-ryeol, and Hwa Jong-bu!
“He is like a skilled and delicate surgeon, hardening our hearts.
The evils of legalism and antinomianism that abuse grace for cheap
Sharply cut, and with the assurance of amazing salvation
“It causes new life to sprout in the hearts of believers.”
In October 1962, Lloyd Jones began his sermon series on the first chapter of John, telling his congregation:
“Where do you think our problem lies? Let me tell you.
The problem is that none of us truly believe in the Lord Jesus Christ! We don't know Christ well enough.
John says:
'What we need most is the knowledge of Christ.
We need to know who he is, what he did, and what he has made possible for us.”
Lloyd Jones believed that the reason many Christians lack joy and confidence, and the reason non-believers misunderstand Christianity as an unhappy and miserable religion, is that Christians do not properly understand the truth of Christianity.
Therefore, he emphasized the knowledge of the truth, that is, the life that comes from right knowledge and right belief.
“Doctrine is the starting point.
“From doctrine comes life, from experience comes everything we need.”
The 32 sermons included in this book are some of Lloyd-Jones's finest later sermons, preached on Sunday mornings in Westminster Chapel.
In this powerful sermon, he focuses on two central themes of John 1: law and grace (v. 17) and assurance of salvation (vv. 12-13).
In an age when the law is seen as tedious and even as an obstacle to grace, he preaches that the law is even more necessary, and by loudly proclaiming the grace and truth of God contained within the law, he affirms that law and grace are not in conflict and that neither can be neglected.
It also provides us with an abundance of excellent touchstones that can help us firmly hold on to our conviction as ‘those born of God’, that is, as children of God.
By doing so, Lloyd-Jones not only saves weak Christians, those who are merely enduring a conventional religious life, but also guides us to live joyfully as children of God and to live powerfully as witnesses of Jesus Christ.
Recommendation
About 30 years ago, when I went on a business trip to Tokyo, I took along Lloyd Jones's commentary on Romans 5.
I remember that by the time I finished reading the book, I was so moved that I couldn't just read it, so I knelt on the floor of my room and read it.
This book clearly demonstrates Lloyd Jones' unique preaching style, using John 1 as the main text.
In other words, it is a sermon that is most like Lloyd-Jones', arguing almost every topic of the Christian faith by freely quoting passages from the Old and New Testaments related to the topic and addressing them one by one, anticipating various questions or objections that the audience may have.
Centered on a balanced and excellent interpretation of the relationship between law and grace—the very DNA of the gospel—this book illuminates the biblical truth about God, the world, and humanity with scholarly rigor, piety, and moving emotion. It will serve as the ultimate guide for renewing and deepening your faith.
_ Son Hee-young | Senior Pastor, Hana Church, Sharing Happiness
In this book, Martin Lloyd-Jones persuasively develops the core of John 1 with his characteristically dense logic.
That core is the core of Christianity and the center of the life that Christians, who are born of God and have become children of God, must live.
"John 1 Commentary" is a book for all who wish to understand the full meaning of law and grace, firmly hold on to the assurance of salvation, and live as true Christians.
_ Lee Chan-su | Senior Pastor, Bundang Woori Church
One of my favorite methods for buying books is to choose them based on the author.
Martin Lloyd-Jones, the author of this book, is a spiritual teacher and father to me, as he has been to many faithful servants of the Korean church.
Although I have never met him face to face, his books have shaped my life and values, and especially as a seminary student preparing for ministry, they clearly showed me and helped me realize the dignity and beauty of ministry and the blessings of the congregation and the church.
I buy and read any of his books without the slightest hesitation.
I have no doubt that 『Commentary on John 1』 will provide relief through heavenly, divine wisdom to those who thirst for grace and assurance of salvation.
I highly recommend it.
_ Hwajongbu | Senior Pastor of Namseoul Church
The Gospel of John contains the most profound truths of all the Gospels.
Martin Lloyd-Jones is not only excellent at preaching from the text, but also at preaching on a topic.
This book, "Commentary on John 1," diagnoses today's contemporary situation and presents biblical answers.
I hope that through this lecture you will experience the greatness of God's word and the excellence of truth.
_ Kim Seo-taek | Senior Pastor, Daegu Dongbu Church
Most of the difficulties that Christians encounter in the process of salvation and sanctification—namely, not being sure of their own salvation and groaning under the bondage of the law, or conversely, misunderstanding grace and falling into sloth and self-indulgence—come from a failure to harmoniously understand the relationship between law and grace.
Lloyd Jones delves deeply into the fundamental issues of this faith, relentlessly digging into them, and completely disentangles the deep-seated misunderstandings within us.
Like a skilled and delicate surgeon, he sharply dissects and cuts away the hardened, legalistic callus that prevents God's grace and love from seeping into our hearts, as well as the antinomian malaise that cheaply abuses grace, thereby revealing the tender flesh of the heart that wells up with confidence, gratitude, and praise for the amazing grace of salvation.
Park Young-don | Professor of Theology, Korea Theological Seminary
It is the Word of God that makes Christians warriors of faith.
This is an amazing statement that goes beyond the persuasion and apologetics of human reason.
When the Word is proclaimed, God's active work of presence and intervention among humanity unfolds.
The Bible testifies to this self-existent God who gave his Son.
The preacher is charged with the responsibility of proclaiming this testimony before the congregation of his time.
From the Apostle John's proclamation that resounded in the wilderness to the proclamation of our time, we can hear the powerful message that has continued through Lloyd Jones's "Commentary on John 1."
_ Park Young-seon | Senior Pastor, Nampo Church
The Bible is the word of God's truth, and preaching is the great work of reviving dead souls through that word and sanctifying those who have been resurrected.
As you read Lloyd Jones's "John 1" commentary, you will experience the brilliance of the Bible, its soul-stirring impact, and its life-changing challenge.
In these days when the word is increasingly fading away, you will hear the vibrant voice of Lloyd Jones, the prophet of truth.
