Providence
Description
Book Introduction
What is God's providence? As the world faces the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19, we naturally wonder where God's providence lies. John Piper takes us on a remarkable journey, witnessing God's providence from Genesis to Revelation, drawing on a lifetime of theological reflection, biblical study, and practical ministry. As he explores God's purpose, nature, and scope for the world, he introduces a God who holds all things in his hands and is intimately involved in the lives of his people. In particular, rather than explaining God's providence in a speculative way, it is explained in simple terms that even ordinary believers can understand. In this book, the author explains that God's providence is God's sovereign will to completely achieve His ultimate goal for the universe. God's providence is the sovereign power that carries out His plan, directs all things toward His ultimate goal, and leads to the final conclusion. In particular, God's providence is carried out according to His will, which is eternal, all-knowing, and infinitely wise. So his plans and goals are perfect. The author explains that, as Job prayed, “God’s purposes will not be frustrated” (Job 42:2), and as the prophet Isaiah said, “all of God’s purposes will be accomplished” (Isaiah 46:10). In this book, the author explains that nothing and no one can alter God's plan, and that God's providence extends beyond the smallest human actions to everything from the flight and fall of birds to the movement of stars. And the plan ultimately emphasizes that it contains God's extremely good will and purpose for us. |

Into the book
God's providence (his purposive sovereignty) is all-encompassing, pervasive, and irresistible.
Therefore, God will successfully achieve his ultimate goal for the universe.
God's providence operates "according to the purpose of him who works according to the counsel of his will" (Eph. 1:11).
This means eternal, omniscient, and infinitely wise.
Therefore, the plan and goals are perfect and there is no room for improvement.
These things never change.
Providence is the purposive sovereignty that carries out these plans and guides all things toward God's ultimate goal, leading to final completion.
The following prayer of Job is truly right:
“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2).
God states this positively:
“My purpose will stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose” (Isaiah 46:10).
