Publisher's Review
The dogma that 'DNA controls human life'
After years of studying cells, Dr. Lipton discovered that cells are governed not by their genes, but by the physical and energetic environment surrounding them. Rather, he discovered that DNA is governed by the energy emanating from positive or negative thoughts and signals coming from outside the cell.
We discovered the surprising fact that human life is determined not by genes, but by our responses to signals from the environment that move living things.
But he says he is like "a priest who goes into the Vatican and shouts that the Pope is a fraud" and is no different from "a heretic in the biological world."
This means that it is difficult for one's own claims and scientific truths to be accepted in the existing scientific community.
So how did this DNA determinism come about?
The author traces its origins to Darwin.
In "On the Origin of Species," Darwin "assumed" that "hereditary" factors were passed down through generations, controlling the traits of offspring (i.e., controlling the characteristics of an individual's life).
Scientists then took the lead in finding the genetic mechanisms that govern life within the structure of cells, culminating in Crick and Watson's discovery of the double helix structure and function of DNA, the basic building block of genes.
Thus, the idea that DNA dominates heredity and controls biological life became a central dogma of molecular biology (DNA supremacy), and scientists came to believe it.
Furthermore, while it was initially thought that DNA determined only a person's physical characteristics, it is now believed that genes also control a person's emotions and behavior.
The idea that genes control life is just a hypothesis.
But Dr. Lipton says the scientific premise that genes govern life is deeply flawed.
In other words, genes are not expressed by themselves, and something in the environment must stimulate their activity (even Darwin admitted in his later years that his theory of evolution underestimated the role of the environment, but it is said that scientists blinded by the dogma of genes turned a blind eye to this fact).
H. Nijut, a world-renowned biologist
F. Nijhout) also said, “Scientists have forgotten that the idea that genes control life is just a hypothesis.”
And this hypothesis is being challenged by actual scientific achievements.
Nijut also emphasizes that it is true that “for a gene to produce something, it must be activated by a signal from the environment, not by the properties of the gene itself.”
The secret of life hidden in the cell membrane
There are two main scientific grounds for Dr. Lipton's strong criticism of 'genetic determinism'.
The first is the science of signal transduction, which focuses on the biochemical pathways by which cells respond to stimuli they receive from their environment.
It is the function of the protoplasm to control cell fate by changing the expression of genes in the cell, to influence cell movement, and to control cell survival.
Soon, the function of a cell will come directly from the movement of the protein 'cogs' within the cell, and the movement created by this protein assembly will become the source of the physiological functions that sustain life.
However, proteins are physical components, and to activate these proteins, an 'environmental signal' must be input.
The link between these proteins and environmental signals is the 'cell membrane' (the author calls it the 'magician membrane').
In particular, membrane proteins (receptor-effector proteins) within the cell membrane are so important that studying how they work has become an independent field called 'signal transduction'.
What we have learned through the science of signaling is that 'cellular activity is primarily determined by interactions with the surrounding environment, not by genetic information.'
Therefore, the fate and behavior of an organism depend on how it perceives its environment.
The true secret of life lies hidden in the simple biological mechanisms of the cell membrane.
This tells us the surprising fact that it is wrong to view the nucleus as the brain of the cell, and that the true brain is the cell membrane.
This is why the author was reborn from a nuclear-centered biologist to a membrane-centered biologist.
The problem is the environment, you idiot!
The second is the epigenetic perspective.
It is the study of how signals received from the environment select, change, and regulate the activity of electrons.
Through epigenetics, scientists have discovered that the DNA blueprint passed down through our genes is not fixed at birth.
This means that environmental influences such as nutrition, stress, and emotions can change genes without altering their basic blueprint.
We also discovered that these changes are passed on to future generations.
Ultimately, these research results prove that it is not the 'superiority of DNA' but the 'superiority of the environment' that is correct.
Dr. Lipton's claim is also supported by the fact that when mother mice with the abnormal 'Agouti' gene were fed different foods, the offspring were born completely different depending on the ingredients in the food.
The growing number of scientists revisiting Lamarck (who believed that traits acquired through environmental influences are passed on to offspring) is also a result of epigenetic evidence.
What governs our body, mind, and life is 'faith.'
Through this study, Dr. Lipton emphasizes that if we are to all live satisfying and healthy lives, lives filled with peace, happiness, and love, we must first and foremost break free from this genetic determinism.
We argue that a healthy and happy life is entirely possible, depending on our mindset.
This life is impossible as long as we remain slaves to our genes.
It is possible when faith rules the body, mind, and life.
However, after Descartes established the idea of 'separating mind and body' in the 17th century, the medical world, which was dominated by the ideas of Newtonian physics, also accepted this, and this continues to this day.
The problem is that their reductionist thinking extends to the medical system that deals with disease.
They believe that the cause of illness comes from one of the factors in a row, and that health can be restored by simply replacing the damaged part.
They are so caught up in Newtonian physics that they fail to see or ignore the quantum world, where "matter is made of energy and everything is relative," and they ignore the role that energy plays in health and disease.
It also overlooks the fact that the biological information network of cells is vastly interconnected.
Dr. Lipton argues that to correct these mistakes, medicine must also be approached from a quantum physics perspective.
From this perspective, the universe is a collection of interdependent energy fields, intertwined in a web of interactions.
This allows us to see how the physical body is influenced by the non-physical mind.
And finally, body and mind can be reunited.
The author emphasizes that the medical and scientific communities should actively utilize this science—the science that reveals how “beliefs” influence human behavior, the activity of genes, and ultimately the direction of life.
Harnessing the power of the mind is far more effective than using drugs.
Because energy signals are much faster and more efficient than chemical signals.
The author says that since the time of Descartes, the world of science and the world of the soul have diverged, and science, which has become distant from the soul, has changed its duties.
That is, instead of trying to understand the order of nature so that humans can live in harmony with it, they only try to control and dominate nature.
Ultimately, this kind of science will lead human civilization to destruction.
The way to prevent this tragedy is for humans to follow the lifestyle of a healthy cellular community, as the author observed in the life of cells, and to move beyond Darwin's theory, which emphasizes the 'individual', to emphasize the cooperation of the 'community'.
A Guide to a Life Overflowing with Happiness, Love, and Health
I realized that it is not our genes but our beliefs that govern our lives.
But a person's beliefs are like a camera filter.
The world looks different depending on which filter you have.
And the human body adapts to these beliefs.
Therefore, in order to live a good life, it is important to learn how to direct our minds towards 'living healthily'.
What is absolutely necessary at this time is to make the most of the life force within us.
To do this, we must not only eliminate stressors from our lives, but also actively pursue a joyful, loving, and fulfilling life that fosters growth.
The same goes for parents raising children.
The core of parenting is raising healthy, intelligent, creative, and joyful children.
But we have been so obsessed with genetic determinism that we have been ignorant of the fact that our beliefs influence our lives, and furthermore, that our actions and attitudes determine the lives of our children.
Of course, genes are important.
But for this gene to shine, we need to create opportunities for children through loving parenting and an environment rich in opportunities.
If we realize again and again that people are not 'trapped' in their own genes and raise our children with the best growth accelerant called 'love', we and the society we belong to will become more vibrant.
