This book aims to provide a deep understanding of the foundations of modern poetry theory and issues related to the analysis of works by studying the basic concepts and structural elements that form the foundation of modern poetry and the basic methods of reading poetry.
In Part 1, under the title ‘The Essence of Poetry’, the definition of poetry, the problem of reading, and the genre characteristics of poetry were introduced.
Part 2, 'Elements of Poetry', introduces the main elements of poetry, including speaker, rhythm, image, metaphor, symbol, irony, paradox, allusion, and parody.
By reading the contents of each chapter included in Part 2, you will not only understand the exact concept and etymology of each element, but you will also be able to appropriately utilize each concept to analyze individual works.
Through this process, you can improve your ability to read poetry and your understanding of individual works.
Part 3 introduces the universal themes of poetry and works of poetry that express such themes.
In the final fourth part, the background and various methods of reading poetry were introduced.
By studying each chapter of Part 4, you will learn practical methods for understanding and analyzing individual works of poetry.
Basically, this book includes descriptions of the changes in the conditions and modes of existence of modern poetry and the resulting changes in meaning based on the basic concepts of poetics and poetics.
Thus, as you read each chapter, you will be able to accurately understand the basic concepts of poetics and gradually grasp how such concepts are applied and utilized in modern poetry and poetics.
In addition to Anglo-American poetry, we also introduced the theories and views on poetry of Korean poets and critics, in an attempt to help readers understand how theories on poetry have been discussed in Korean poetry history and the world of poetry.
