Book Introduction
'I did this difficult thing!'
Jirisan Mountain Trail: A Journey brimming with confidence
This is a story about children who build confidence and grow through trekking through Jirisan Mountain.
Every year, children from Haengbok Elementary School in Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, take on the challenge of a two-night, three-day trek up Jirisan Mountain.
Some children are eagerly waiting for the race, but others want to avoid it.
The same goes for Jiho, whose mother unilaterally transferred him from a city school to Haengbok Elementary School.
The children prepare for the Jirisan trek by trekking around Maisan, Unjangsan, and Gubongsan.
Jiho, who lacks exercise, finds it difficult to keep up with the group and is dissatisfied with the school's hiking program.
The Jirisan trek finally departed.
The climb is steep, the descent is dizzying, and you just keep walking along the endless mountain path.
In these endless moments of self-denial, tears come to my eyes and curses come out without me realizing it.
Children move forward silently, encountering their own limitations, but eventually overcoming them.
As he faces the sunrise at Cheonwangbong Peak at dawn, Jiho's heart begins to feel a strange sense of satisfaction instead of complaints.
'I did this difficult thing!'
For the children of Happy Elementary School, hiking Jirisan Mountain becomes a valuable experience that will be etched into their entire body.
A sparkling growth drama unfolds as children take on difficult challenges, overcome them with perseverance and courage, and grow taller.

Into the book
I was so tired and worn out that I felt like I couldn't do anything today.
I had never been to a high mountain before and I hated physical exertion, so in a way, it was a natural result.
I'm going to Gubongsan Mountain next month, but it'll be harder since there are nine peaks.
I think we should change the name of Haengbok Elementary School to Mountain School.
--- p.55
I was supposed to arrive at Yeonhacheon around 5 o'clock, but I wondered if I'd make it on time. With the rain pouring down, I was feeling hopeless.
I wanted to give up like this.
At the end of the uphill climb was Rabbit Peak.
I wanted to pour a curse on Rabbit Peak.
--- p.112
I hate mountains, so I don't know much about other mountains.
But Jirisan has something truly unique.
People are generally friendly.
There were adults who started out similarly yesterday, and without a doubt, they welcomed us warmly.
“Hey, you guys are really amazing.”
--- p.143
The picture my father drew for me, my mother's apology, and the sight of me walking home from school after safely completing the Jirisan hike were all precious and beautiful gifts.
I never once thought I was proud of myself, but now I feel a little bit like that.
Now I felt confident enough and thought I could lose weight.
My heart raced as I realized that living in the unfamiliar city of Jinan, which had seemed like a reckless challenge just a few months ago, would lead my life to valuable challenges and growth.

Publisher's Review
Why do people go to the mountains and suffer?
And why Jirisan of all places?
For children these days who are addicted to games and videos while repeating the school-academy-home routine, hiking, especially trekking up Jirisan Mountain, would be considered an extremely difficult activity, on a par with the movie 'Mission Impossible'.
No, first of all, it is incomprehensible that one would leave one's comfortable home and climb a rugged mountain to endure hardship.
In the mountains, you can only move forward with your own two feet.
A place where no one can walk for me, a place where I have to take responsibility for my own body.
This arduous mountain climbing process becomes a process of self-reflection while testing one's limits.
There are many famous mountains throughout our country, but among them, Jirisan Mountain has a unique charm that attracts many 'Jirisan fans'.
Jiho's parents and King Kong Sam of Haengbok Elementary School are also 'Jirisan fans' who are captivated by Jirisan and suffer from 'Jirisan fever'.
Jirisan Mountain, which spans three provinces (Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk) and five cities and counties (Namwon, Gurye, Hamyang, Sancheong, and Hadong), is often likened to a mother who embraces and embraces generously due to its wide and deep foothills.
Those who visit Jirisan are also moved by its abundant landscape and are naturally imbued with a spirit of acceptance, understanding, and tolerance .
In this way, Jirisan is not a mountain where each person goes quickly, but a mountain where we go together while looking out for those who go late, a mountain where we help each other and make concessions to each other.
Just as Jiho learned consideration and cooperation through his own experiences while going on difficult hikes with his friends and seniors, the wide embrace of Jirisan Mountain becomes a warm place where children learn how to treat people and nature .
Author's Note
The Jirisan trek is not easy.
I'm out of breath, my shoulders hurt, and my legs feel heavy as if they're weighing a ton.
But as I walk that path, I think about myself when things get tough or I feel like giving up, and it gives me the courage to say, 'But I did it!'
When the adults I meet on the mountain smile and say, “You’re amazing!”, my heart feels warm.
Graduated kids say:
“It was the hardest, but I want to go back.”
“My experience of going to Jirisan was a great help.”
The Jirisan trek is a very special memory.
The experience of overcoming difficult times gives us great courage to live our lives going forward.
Children who have been to Jirisan become much more confident and believe that they can accomplish anything.
To me, Jirisan is not just a mountain.
He is a kind and warm friend who comforts me and helps me meet my true self .
I hope that the children reading this will also experience the kindness, comfort, and joy of walking on Jirisan Mountain someday.
Jirisan will definitely be a wonderful gift for you too.
