This novel, which immediately became an Amazon bestseller and perfectly lived up to expectations for Louis Sachar, goes back five hundred years to the Renaissance.
The adventures of Tulia, the princess of Esqubeta, a fictional kingdom located in Europe, her apprentice scribe Pito, who loves her, and Anatole, the court magician who tries to protect their love, captivate readers.
As the complex and intricate story unfolds smoothly, like "The Pit," the insights that move between the Renaissance and modern times, along with Louis Sachar's signature witty humor, shine.
As you follow the journey of three people who defy fate, imagining the scent of magical potions made by burning candles and the thrilling secret passages of an ancient castle, you will encounter the voices of small beings who have not been recorded in history, and true love.

Into the book
“I love him, Nato! You have to save him.”
I pressed the urine glass against her face and gathered her tears.
First in brown eyes, then in blue eyes.
“I have a plan.”
I said confidently.
--- p.31

Yes, that's right.
My goal was not to create a love potion, but something quite the opposite.
But opposites tend to have more in common than you think.

--- pp.41-42

“I may not be able to control my destiny, but only I can decide how I will face it.”
--- p.44

“The princess’ sparkling blue eyes when she looks at you.
The poppy will dim the light.
“If you look closely into the princess’s brown eyes… … .”
He continued speaking.
“It was like walking into a dark and mysterious cave.”
A faint teardrop sparkled in his eyes in the candlelight.
“Do you love the princess?”
“How could I not dare to do so?”
--- p.47

In my love potion, I put an odd number of daisy petals.
She loves me.
She doesn't love me.
She loves me.
You may laugh, but like Ponce de León's fountain of youth, most myths have some basis in reality.

--- p.51

“It’s for Pito.
When the time comes, I will look him straight in the eye.
“The last thing he sees will be my eternal love.”
--- p.66

“Free will is all we have.
“Free will is the reason we exist as we are! Everything else—health, wealth, fame—is beyond our control.”
--- pp.229-230

It was not a later historian who called the era in which I lived the Renaissance.
We called it that ourselves! And we named the millennium before that the Dark Ages.
Shouldn't this be the extent of arrogance?

Publisher's Review
The Legend of the Old Castle: The Hidden Story of the 'Great Wizard'
Louis Sacker's enchanting and honest fantasy world

There is a legend handed down about a certain European castle called the 'Tiger Castle'.
The story of the 'Whispering King' who wielded power simply by whispering, the queen who killed her husband and married another king, and the beautiful princess who was kidnapped and murdered on the day before her wedding.
And there is the story of the 'Great Wizard Anatole', which is forgotten because it is not recorded in history.

In 1523, Anatole, the court wizard of the declining kingdom of Esqubeta, is obsessed with turning black sand into gold at the request of the finance minister.
Then the king gives an important mission.
Princess Tullia, who was supposed to marry the Prince of Oksatania to overcome the kingdom's crisis, is refusing to marry, saying she has fallen in love with the royal apprentice scribe, Pito.
This is to create a potion that will make the princess obedient.
Meanwhile, Tullia also asks Anatole to save Pito, who is in danger of being executed… … .
How will Anatole, charged with the weighty mission of protecting the kingdom and rescuing Pito, navigate this crisis? What fantastic magic will the "Great Wizard Anatole" unleash?

“I love him, Nato! You have to save him.” (…)
“I have a plan.”
I said confidently.

There is someone I want to protect even if it means going against fate.
For the one I love, the magic secret that will make me forget

The method that Anatole came up with was the 'Memory Potion'.
It is to feed the potion that erases the love from the mind to Tullia and Pito.
Anatole, who was experimenting with Phyto by changing the ingredients to make a potion and rearranging the candles, soon became close to Phyto.
He debates whether a memory potion is the best option for the two of them, but he cannot disobey the king's orders, so he ends up completing the memory potion.
Tullia and Pito, who have completely forgotten each other's memories, are now bickering over the misunderstanding that the other has framed them.
The magic is successful, but Tullia's wedding and Pito's execution are set to proceed as scheduled, and Anatole steals Pito away under the guise of the Black Death, a disease then known as the "Blue Death."
And he plans to stop the wedding by giving Prince Oksatania another potion.

On the day of the wedding of the century, the ceremony begins differently than planned, and the potion Anatole made takes effect too late, turning the wedding hall into a scene of chaos.
Anatole, who barely escaped the situation, leaves the castle with Tullia and Pito to escape the retaliation of the Kingdom of Oxatania and goes to the 'low lands' where many citizens are said to enjoy freedom.
The Renaissance was a time of revival of humanism, following the 'Dark Ages' of the Middle Ages, when everything was believed to be governed by God's word and providence.
What adventures await Tullia and Pito, who reject their predetermined fate and run out of the castle in search of freedom?

“I may not be able to control my destiny, but only I can decide how I will face it.” Page 44

The true meaning of a discovery that changed the world
None other than love and freedom

Tullia, Pito, and Anatole's journey takes them through deep forests and farms, to a monastery, and then to a port city.
Louis Sachar cleverly conveys his insights into the scientific discoveries and civilizations of the time, moving back and forth between the Renaissance and the modern era through Anatole's eyes.
Anatole cites gunpowder, the printing press, and the triangular sail as the great inventions that gave birth to the Renaissance.
Gunpowder, which changed the nature of warfare from close combat to artillery fire; printing, which spread the word and knowledge of the gods, previously held by a few, to more people; and finally, the triangular sail, which opened the era of navigation to the New World.

The triangular sail, which could easily swing between port and starboard, allowed the ship to sail against the wind.
In my opinion, this is magic.
Page 370

Such highly developed science is no different from magic.
And ultimate love is also like magic.
Tullia and Pito, who were willing to sacrifice for each other, eventually escape the rules of the castle and the dungeon that had imprisoned them and find freedom.
Their magical journey, in which they defied fate and went their own way, was not written about in the history books of the victors, but was concealed and became only a legend.
But isn't it the will and love of individuals striving for a free and equal world that truly brought about transformation? As you navigate the secret passages of Renaissance castles and harbor alleys, guided by Louis Sachar's delightful prose that zips through long passages, the emotion conveyed by the triumph of small beings will linger like a sweet, lingering fragrance.
