Description
Book Introduction
The ninth installment of the Kkul Kkul Munko, a literary series by the School of Thought that helps 1318s understand themselves and view the wider world through novel themes and rich content.
《School 100 Years Later》 is a four-part science fiction anthology set in the most familiar place to teenagers: school.
Young writers and current teachers So Hyang, Yoon Ja-young, and Lee Ji-hyun participated, along with writer Jeong Myeong-seop, who has a deep connection with the school as a writing teacher.

The Earth's environment is being destroyed, the number of students attending school is decreasing, and science and technology are advancing by the day, increasing our ability to learn without being restricted by time and space.
So, will schools be necessary in the future? If they still exist, why? These four stories begin with this question.

From Geo (〈Schoolverse〉), who hears that there is an AI in his class, to Seonghyeok (〈The Weirds of Draven High School〉), who is forced to transfer to a heterosexual school due to a virus and low heterosexual sensitivity, to Sisyphus (〈Special Admissions〉), who manipulates his grades to gain the right to settle on Mars, to Sorin (〈Can We Coexist?〉), who discovers that she is a hybrid of aliens and Earthlings in a society where both are excluded.
As you follow the narratives of the main characters in a story that transcends imagination and reality, you will realize the importance of school and friends that you never knew existed.

Into the book
“Shall I tell you a secret?”
“What secret?”
“There was a fake student among the students who took class with you earlier.
“He is not human.”
“So? Are you saying I’m a ghost or something?”
“It’s AI.”
---From "Schoolverse"

“The school bus is like a dream castle.
Whether I continue to spend my time comfortably in it or wake up, the important thing is that I have to choose for myself.
Whether I continue to spend my time comfortably in it or wake up, the important thing is that I have to choose for myself.
"No matter how wonderful the school bus may be, is it really true that I learn from something I didn't choose? No matter how well-crafted the world around me is, if it wasn't my choice, it's meaningless to me."
---From "Schoolverse"

"who is this?"
“My name is Artemis.
“You are a thousand-year-old fox.”
Daiki was annoyed by Artemis's answer, which was about to sway her nine tails.
“It was a different species.
What's going on here?
“To help a friend.”
---From "The Freaks of Draven High School"

“Hey, what’s going on? What if I bring vomit?”
Burning saw the two and took off his oxygen supply helmet and said.
Sisyphus slowly looked up at Burning, who was breathing heavily and grumbling.
"Why? Is there something wrong with us coming in?"
“What are you talking about, Sisyphus? Didn’t you hear that story from your mother?”
Sisyphus looked at Guto in confusion for a moment.
He hesitated for only a moment, then quickly added strength to his voice.
“Are you saying that it doesn’t matter what happens to your friend, as long as you pass the test like me?”
---From "Special Selection"

"Why are you separating Earthlings and aliens and making them hate each other? If they'd been in the same classroom since elementary school, wouldn't they have neither hated nor discriminated against each other?"
“You speak well.
"Are you going to be a speaker? By the way, do your friends know you're a human?"
“The principal’s threats don’t work anymore.”
“Do you really think this is just a threat?”
“Principal, please be prepared.”
---From "Can We Coexist?"

Publisher's Review
“Aliens, xenomorphs, AI and humans,
“We all go to the same school.”

From personalized metaverse schools to hybrid schools in space cities!
A school x SF anthology that crosses reality and imagination, drawn by four 'Teacher' authors.

The Kkul Kkul Mungo, a literary series by the School of Thought that helps 1318s understand themselves and view the wider world through novel topics and rich content.
While the previous series dealt with realistic issues faced by teenagers, such as bullying, addiction, body, and speech, the ninth work of Kkul Kkul Munko, "School 100 Years Later," contains four short stories that deal with the most familiar place to teenagers: "school."
Young writers and teachers who communicate directly with students at school and think about the future of education, including Sohyang, Jayoung Yoon, and Jihyun Lee, as well as Myungseop Jeong, a star in the world of youth fiction who has a deep connection with schools, including working as a writing class teacher, also participated in this work.

“Will schools still exist in an era of low birth rates and climate disaster?”
Four stories that question the essence of school, starting with the question:

Over the past three years, we've experienced "non-face-to-face school" for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While some said that this was the direction schools should take in the future, there were also many voices arguing that a return to "normal" face-to-face education should be achieved as soon as possible.
This is because each person's vision of the future and the role of school they define are different.
Although it is impossible to say for sure what is right, everyone can clearly see that schools are places where changes in society are directly reflected.

The Earth's environment is being destroyed, and fewer and fewer students are going to school.
On the other hand, as science and technology advance day by day, our ability to learn without being restricted by time and space is increasing.
So, are schools really necessary? If they still exist, why? "School 100 Years Later" is a series of four stories that begin with this question.

Coexistence, experience, understanding…
Things we can only feel and learn when we come into contact with each other

Although they started from the same question, the future worlds depicted by the four authors are surprisingly diverse.
From the appearance of humans still living on Earth to the story of settling on a third city planet that has already left Earth, the story freely unfolds about schools and students in the future, each arriving at their own pace.
Furthermore, as we follow the perspectives of writers who imagine schools 100 years from now through various imaginations based on science fiction, we are led to contemplate the essence of schools that will not change even after 100 years.

All of them depict the daily lives of students in the distant future, where it would not be strange for AI (〈Schoolvers〉, Sohyang), aliens hiding somewhere on Earth (〈Raven: The Eccentrics of Eccentric High School〉, Jeong Myeongseop), robots (〈Special Admissions〉, Lee Jihyun), and aliens (〈Can We Coexist?〉, Yoon Jayoung) to appear in the same class, but readers of these books will feel a strange sense of intimacy and even connection rather than a feeling of being out of touch with reality.
This is because the focus is on the growth of the main character as he learns to properly relate to himself and those around him, rather than the unfamiliarity of the background beings.
Furthermore, through this book, you will come to realize that what ultimately connects you to those around you is your complete 'heart', and that 'school' is a place where you learn how to challenge new things and understand yourself and others.

"No matter how wonderful the school bus may be, is it really true that I'm learning from something I didn't choose? No matter how well-made the world around me is, if it wasn't my choice, it's meaningless to me." (So-hyang)

Geo, who attends a metaverse school.
One day, while he was peacefully attending school, he heard from a girl named Yuna that his friends at the metaverse school might not be people, but AI.
In order to confirm whether or not his favorite friend, Hani, is human, Geo heads to Soljido where Hani lives...

This work helps us think again about schools and education in the era of low birth rates that our society is facing.
We can see through Geo's adventures in the metaverse that the purpose of education is not college entrance exams, but the complete growth of an individual.

“It was a different species.
What's going on here?

“To help a friend.” (Jeong Myeong-seop)

Humanity faces a crisis as zombies (regenerators) appear on Earth due to environmental pollution and viruses.
At that time, with the help of alien species (werewolves, vampires, etc.) who were hiding on Earth, we were able to barely preserve peace on Earth, but humans' exclusive attitude toward alien species still remains.
Meanwhile, Seonghyuk is forced to transfer to a school attended by other students.
Will Seonghyuk be able to adapt well to school?

The story of author Jeong Myeong-seop, who seriously considered the growth of the 1318 generation through diverse genres and narratives in youth literature, shows with a delicate eye what has been missed in public education that has focused on entrance exams so far.
What I need more than anything to grow myself is understanding other people.
Understanding is not just about knowledge, but also about getting to know each other through sharing daily life in the same classroom.

“Are you saying that it doesn’t matter what happens to your friend, as long as you pass the test like me?” (Lee Ji-hyun)

A time when the Earth is no longer a place for survival.
Humanity prepares to leave for Mars.
The school is focused on producing excellent students who will settle on Mars.
Only students with excellent character and qualifications can obtain the right to settle on Mars, so cheating by students and parents continues.
The protagonist Sisyphus also gets caught up in the whirlpool of competition… .

This work seems to show the current state of youth who still live under the pressure of competition, although their targets have changed.
However, it reminds us once again that it was the small attention from the school and those around them that helped students who were exhausted and worn out by competition to get back on their feet.

“If we had been in the same classroom since elementary school, wouldn’t we not have hated or discriminated against each other?” (Yoon Ja-young)

Earthlings and aliens who left the uninhabitable Earth and settled on a new planet.
Although they are planets that have settled together, the hostility towards each other is so great that the Earthlings and the aliens operate separately.
One day, Sorin, who was peacefully attending school on Earth, receives shocking news.
The fact that Sorin was selected as a pilot subject for the newly implemented policy of combining Earthlings and Astronauts.
I went to the principal right away to ask him about it, but all I got in return was a hidden secret about Sorin's father...

This work depicts a school where aliens and Earthlings ostracize each other, showing that discrimination other than race or gender can exist.
At the same time, we can learn values such as ‘coexistence’ and ‘cooperation’ that can help us reduce the gap in our hearts towards each other.

A letter from the future school, 100 years from now, to us in the 21st century.

I recommend this book to students who wake up in the morning wondering, "Why on earth do I have to go to school?" and to teachers and parents who are struggling to figure out what to say to students or children who earnestly ask, "Why do I have to go to school?"
School is a major part of our daily lives, but for teenagers who go to school habitually and mechanically and have never thought about what kind of place school is or what we learn and experience there, knowingly or unknowingly, the daily lives of the four protagonists living in a different time and space will be a journey into the future and an opportunity to reflect on their own daily lives.
Furthermore, we will be able to realize that school is not a place where we act unilaterally and compete solely for the growth of 'me', but rather a space where 'we' communicate, grow, create, and nurture together with 'teachers and friends'.
