Photojournalist Kang Hyung-won is the first Korean to win the Pulitzer Prize, often called the “Nobel Prize of Journalists,” twice.
His first collection of our cultural heritage, “Our Cultural Heritage in Pictures,” was reissued as a revised and expanded edition to commemorate the 80th anniversary of liberation.

Kang Hyung-won is a veteran photojournalist with 33 years of experience who has worked as a photojournalist for major American media outlets including the White House, the LA Times, the Associated Press, and Reuters, and has quickly covered international incidents and accidents such as the LA April 29 Riots, the scandal surrounding former US President Bill Clinton, the Iraq War, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as well as major scenes in modern Korean history such as the June 10 Democracy Movement and the Seoul Olympics.
Since the first edition of “Our Cultural Heritage in Pictures” was published, it has met readers in many media and programs, including tvN’s [You Quiz], KBS’s [Good Morning], MBC’s [Daily Instructor], and EBS’s [Shoulders of Giants], as well as in government agencies, universities, and lecture halls. It has also introduced our cultural heritage with this book not only in Korea but also in the United States and Europe.

This revised and expanded edition introduces two new cultural heritage items that allow us to reflect on the meaning of liberation and the value of democracy.
The main characters are the 'Taegeukgi', which symbolizes the spirit of our people and the desire for independence, and the 'Korean tiger', which became extinct during the Japanese colonial period.
The film closely follows the scene of the removal of the oldest existing Taegeukgi in Korea, the 'Denny Taegeukgi', from the National Museum of Korea's storage, and includes vivid and realistic photos of the playful expressions and movements of a tiger captured up close in collaboration with the Baekdu Tiger Conservation Center of the National Baekdudaegan Arboretum.
Here, we present to readers a more enriched version with updated content and photos added through follow-up reporting.

Following the first edition, you can also see the ‘Gilt-bronze Maitreya Bodhisattva Pensive Meditation (1962-2)’ on the new cover.
The Bangasayusang has established itself as the most beloved Buddhist cultural asset among Koreans, to the point of creating a "Museum" (museum + goods) craze along with a solo exhibition at the National Museum of Korea's "Room of Thought."
The soft and mysterious smile, the simple yet sophisticated and delicately sculpted body, and the harmonious balance are perfectly captured by the lens, and the deep beauty and breath of the Bangasayusang are vividly revived on the flat cover.

The true nature and value of cultural heritage, as well as the stories condensed within it, are all contained in one volume, “Our Cultural Heritage in Pictures,” beautifully and delicately captured by Kang Hyung-won, a “visual storyteller” who captures stories beyond what is visible to the eye.
This book, which captures our brilliant history and culture through 'photography' that enables communication across language, generation, and cultural barriers, is a precious gift that will instill a sense of identity and pride in being Korean in the next generation, who will become the protagonists of our history in the future, and in Koreans who are building foundations for their lives around the world.

Publisher's Review
· Celebrating the 80th anniversary of liberation, we reexamine the Taegeukgi and the Korean Tiger, symbols of the Republic of Korea!

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of liberation in 2025, we have planned a revised and expanded edition of “Our Cultural Heritage in Pictures” to join in this meaningful journey.
This revised and expanded edition sheds new light on cultural heritage sites imbued with historical value, such as the Taegeukgi, which symbolizes the spirit of our people and their desire for independence, and the Korean tiger, which became extinct during the Japanese colonial period.
To achieve this, the author traveled to Shanghai, China and Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do, to report and capture the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range through his lens.

The 'Taegeukgi' section introduces historical sites such as the 'Denny Taegeukgi', the oldest Taegeukgi in Korea, being taken out of the National Museum of Korea's storage, and the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai, China, and the Korean Empire's Embassy in Washington, D.C.
The photo of the 'Provisional Charter of the Republic of Korea' hanging in the Rotunda Hall of the National Assembly Building symbolically shows the spirit of democracy that our ancestors fought for and protected with their lives, and delivers a weighty message to us today.

The 'Korean Tiger' series, produced in collaboration with the Baekdu Mountain Tiger Conservation Center of the National Baekdudaegan Arboretum, tells the story of the past, present, and future of the Korean tiger, which ruled the Baekdudaegan Mountains for thousands of years but disappeared from the wild due to the ruthless overhunting of the Japanese.
The vivid photos, which capture not only the brave and strong image of the tiger we are familiar with, but also the playful expressions and actions of the tiger as it rolls around in the snow, leave us with a pleasant sense of freshness and lingering emotions.

In addition, since the first edition was published, the latest news on UNESCO World Heritage sites such as ‘Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance’, ‘Gaya Tombs’, and ‘Bangudae Petroglyphs’, which are awaiting the registration results in July, have been updated, and the contents and photos of ‘Jongmyo Jerye and Jongmyo Jeryeak’, ‘Hangeul’, ‘Jeungdo Jaga Metal Movable Type’, and ‘Jeju Horse’ have been supplemented or replaced through follow-up reporting.

The revised and expanded edition also includes exclusive, close-up shots from various angles of cultural heritages that have not been revealed to the public or are difficult to photograph up close, such as the 'Denny Taegeukgi', 'Korean Tiger', and 'Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon', giving readers the joy of discovering a new side of cultural heritage.

· Our cultural heritage collection, engraved in photographs that you will never forget once you see them.
"The Most Korean Thing" Recorded Through Two Perspectives: An Outsider's Eye and an Insider's Eye

Photojournalist Kang Hyung-won is the first Korean to win two Pulitzer Prizes (team awards) for his coverage of the 1993 LA riots and the 1999 scandal involving former US President Bill Clinton.
This book, written with the "eyes of an outsider" who has lived in the United States for over 40 years and objectively viewed Korean history and culture, and with the eyes of an "insider" who, as a Korean, harbors a passionate affection for his homeland and strives to preserve and pass on the most Korean values, reminds us of the beauty and preciousness of our culture, which is so close that we often overlook it.

A great photograph has the power to tell a story and convey emotion at the same time.
A single picture can resonate more powerfully than any words or sentences.
Above all, photography is a 'language' that enables communication even when languages and characters are different, and across different eras and generations, so it is a good means of effectively conveying our history and culture.
This book is filled with beautiful and delicate cultural heritage photos that “cannot be seen anywhere else” and “once seen, you will never forget” taken from Kang Hyung-won’s archive.
I hope these photos will help you listen to the stories our culture tells, and that you will never forget them.

· 'Korea and Korean Culture' in Korean and English (bilingual)
To Koreans around the world, the next generation, and everyone around the world

The 'Visual History of Korea' project was born from the regret that Korean history and culture are distorted or poorly treated overseas, and are expressed awkwardly in English, and the concern that this may cause immigrant generations to lose their Korean identity.
As the author is a 1.5 generation American immigrant who has spent most of his life in English-speaking countries, this reality must have hit home even more deeply.

Based on these concerns, I wrote this book in two languages: Korean and English.
This is part of an effort to accurately and correctly inform not only domestic readers but also Koreans living abroad and foreigners interested in Korea about 'Korea and Korean culture.'

《Our Cultural Heritage in Pictures》 is a family book that can be read by both the generations who have created our history and the next generation who will become the protagonists of our history. It is a historical and cultural record that will instill a sense of identity and pride in Koreans around the world, and it will be a precious gift that will introduce the beauty and excellence of Korean culture to foreigners.
