Stories buried at Daejeon National Cemetery
Description
Book Introduction
Daejeon National Cemetery is a national cemetery where those who dedicated themselves to the country are buried.
As of June 30, 2024, a total of 146,443 remains are interred at Daejeon National Cemetery, including 101,006 graves, 41,365 memorial tablets, 4,949 memorial tablets, and 33 urns of unknown soldiers.
The lives of those buried in the national cemetery give many things to think about for those living in the present.

Kim Seon-jae, Lim Jae-geun, and Jeong Seong-il have been providing commentary at the Daejeon National Cemetery Peace Trail event and upon request from groups and visitors.
Meanwhile, based on my experience as a commentator, I wanted to convey to more people the lives of those buried in the Daejeon National Cemetery and the world they dreamed of, so I started writing articles for OhmyNews in September 2023 and serialized them under the title “Stories Buried in the Daejeon National Cemetery.” This book is a compilation of articles serialized over the course of a year.

Although nearly 150,000 people are buried in Daejeon National Cemetery, only about 300 of them are mentioned in this book.
While reading the book, you will come across well-known names such as Hong Beom-do, Son Ki-jeong, and Kwak Nak-won, but you will also often come across unfamiliar names.
The introduction explains the history and outline of Daejeon National Cemetery, and Chapter 1, “Independence Movement,” tells the story of independence heroes we were unaware of.
Chapter 2, 'Military Rebellion', features stories of various soldiers, including true soldiers who did their duty as soldiers, as well as opportunists and rebels who lived tainted lives.
Chapter 3, "State Violence and Social Disaster," focuses on various tragedies in modern Korean history, including the Jeju April 3 Incident, the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, suspicious military deaths, and the Sewol Ferry Disaster, and introduces the figures buried at Daejeon National Cemetery.
The last four chapters, 'Social Contribution', contain the lives of scientists, firefighters, and athletes who sacrificed themselves for others.
