The Director of Gangnam-gu Motgol Library Reveals the Secret of "Reading Elementary Classics for 20 Minutes a Day"

When asked, "What is most essential for deeply understanding and savoring life?" many intellectuals recommend reading classic humanities literature.
Materials related to the humanities classics now occupy an important position in all fields, including education, politics, and philosophy.
The author of this book also observed people reading books in libraries for a long time and realized the hidden power of humanities classics.
So, I emphasize that both children and adults should take time to look inside themselves by examining classical sources.

Furthermore, it systematically explains why reading classics is essential for elementary school life and how to practice and make reading classics a habit, even if it seems difficult.
In fact, he emphasizes that reading in this field is not an insurmountable barrier, citing examples such as a review of 『Myeongsimbogam』 read together by fourth graders and their parents, and a middle school daughter and her father reading 『Analects』 and exchanging reading impressions through letters.
We recommend reading classics as a family activity that can be practiced in any household, and we also introduce specific methods for continuing post-reading activities together.
Let's start with a 20-minute a day elementary classics reading experience that you can enjoy with your child, just like playing, without any special equipment or fancy know-how.

Into the book
My child usually enjoys reading books, but he tends to read extensively rather than thoroughly.
However, through reading classics, I was able to develop the habit of reading books in sections, and I think I realized the attitude of understanding the content more deeply by reading slowly through copying and reading aloud.
This process reminded me of a very important part of reading that my child and I had been missing.
--- p.20, from “Review of Family Classic Reading for 20 Minutes a Day”

When comparing comic books to regular books, I often use the examples of soybean paste stew and fast food.
Just as you can't insist on healthy food for every meal, you can't eat hamburgers, pizza, chicken, or ramen for every meal.
If you insist on eating only the foods you want to eat and mainly consume fast food, you will definitely experience health problems.
Should I just leave it alone since it's better to eat fast food than starve, or should I start correcting my eating habits now?
I think that's the difference between comics and regular books.

Adults believe that books should be of different thicknesses depending on the child's grade level.
While I would consider it embarrassing if my fifth grader were to read a thin book or picture book, I would find it embarrassing if my second grader were to read a book that looked quite thick.
When I come out, they look at me with envy.
But this is a wrong idea.
--- p.53

Usually, the extensive reading period comes when you reach the upper grades of elementary school, but if you build your thinking skills by reading short, easy-to-read oriental classics in the third and fourth grades (beginner reading period) before that, you can easily pass the extensive reading period and the mature reading period.
--- p.142

I want to ask my parents.
“Do you have a good understanding of your child’s reading preferences?”
Just as we cannot apply the same care method to every child, the same goes for reading.
It is not advisable to blindly borrow and read books that someone else likes without regard to the child's reading stage or taste.
I strongly urge you to avoid blindly crossing off the books your child has read and falling into a false sense of accomplishment by thinking they have read all the recommended books.
The problem is taste.
--- p.171

We introduce the results of a study (Jong Gwang-hee, 2012) that examined the impact of family reading programs on children's reading.
A family reading program was conducted 10 times for third grade elementary school children and their parents, and the reading attitude score was 89.30, which was 15.7 points higher on average than the comparison group.
Of course, at the beginning of the program, the children seemed to be participating obligatorily and showed an attitude of trying to write model answers in the reading records, but as the sessions continued, the children freely expressed their thoughts and feelings.

My eldest daughter, Ha-eun, has never attended an essay academy before.
However, I was not a voracious reader who read a huge number of books.
Ha-eun, who was like that, entered university through the essay-based admission process.
There may be many reasons, but I conclude that it cannot be ruled out that time in the past when I spent eight months copying the Analects, thinking, worrying, and trying to put it into practice.
There are no other purposes for reading classics, but when you silently immerse yourself in this world of reading classics, there are many results that come as gifts.

Reading is a habit, not a skill!
Why You Should Pay Attention to Beginner Reading in 3rd and 4th Grade

Korean language teachers and reading and writing experts always emphasize the power of elementary Korean language and reading.
If children do not develop the ability to understand text and grasp the meaning it is trying to convey during this period, they will not only have difficulty learning in middle and high school, but they will also likely not be able to understand complex information as adults.
This phenomenon is called 'effective illiteracy'.
Today's children, accustomed to digital devices, will likely be able to read and write in the near future, but they are unlikely to understand documents such as medication instructions or terms and conditions of various services.

So, author Lee A-young, who wrote “Reading Elementary Classics for 20 Minutes a Day,” focuses on the beginning readers in 3rd and 4th grade.
If children begin to take interest in books with short texts like picture books in the first and second grades of elementary school, which are the introductory reading period, they should gradually increase their reading material by reading thin, medium, and thick books in the third and fourth grades of elementary school to successfully pass the extensive reading period (upper elementary school to middle school) and mature reading period (high school and above).
Increasing your writing skills is about developing concentration, literacy, and imagination all at the same time.
Children who successfully pass this reading test will inevitably become accustomed to expressing themselves by writing or expressing their thoughts in the language they have acquired.

Why should we read the classics?
Because it always asks us questions!

Reading classics is known as the best learning method for acquiring humanistic imagination.
From past to present, countless great people have cited the cultivation of the humanities and classics as the most essential virtue in raising children.
The same goes for this book.
The element of 'classics' is essential for developing a true reading habit that develops one's ability to study and think.
Why on earth is this so? To properly interpret a classic work, the reader must also be willing to engage with its world.
Simply put, you can say that you have read and thought about the classics only when you learn to ask yourself questions while reading classic works, accept their contents with your heart, and practice them in your life.

The author especially recommends that children in the third and fourth grades of elementary school begin reading oriental classics and begin reading humanities classics.
Although it may seem like a thick and boring book, full of gore and impossible to understand, it is actually a book with little burden on the reader, making it suitable for developing good reading habits.
Even though the entire volume may seem voluminous, if you read it one chapter at a time, you can sufficiently cover the content in just 20 minutes a day.
So, if you calculate it as a daily digestible amount, it is a book that is short and easy to read in small chunks, and you can read it over a long period of time and reflect on yourself without any regrets.

Classics that parents and children read together
Includes methods, post-reading activities, cases, and reviews.

Let's put aside concerns like how to start reading classics with your child or what preparations are needed to properly memorize what they read.
The author has consistently read and shared classics with people, from his time as a librarian at an elementary and middle school library to his time as director of a public library.
Not only did I systematize those experiences and methods and introduce them in this book, but I also included a review of "Myeongsimbogam," which I read with mothers and children who are frequent library users last year.
The eldest daughter also revealed the content of her reading the Analects of Confucius with her father when she was in middle school and sharing her thoughts on it.

In addition to the elementary classic reading methods and examples, the author repeatedly explains how important reading is in education and life.
It cannot be denied that a child's reading ability, developed well from the beginning, becomes a weapon in learning, but that alone is not the reason for emphasizing reading classics.
Rather, the author says that through classics, children will gradually understand what they like and what they are interested in, and establish their own worldview.
The key to reading classics, as revealed in this book, is to read and reread and share your thoughts with others.
So, I encourage anyone to start today without fear.
