Author's Note

Into the book
“Try raising the tip of the sword a little more.
No, just raise your arms a little.
yes yes.
you're right."
A knife caught his eye.
I closed my eyes.
In the dense darkness, I quickly stripped the black fur off the large beast.
Then, the pale flesh was revealed, and the faint smell of blood reached my nose, then disappeared.
The blade cut through the meat, pushing it away and then digging into a new crevice again.
I felt quite excited as I swung the blade to the beat and rhythm.
It gave me a strange sense of pleasure to think that there was an audience ready to admire what I had always done alone.
“Okay.
“You may sit down.”
I opened my eyes to Park Tae-sang's voice.
It was an unfamiliar office again.
I put the sweat-soaked knife into my shopping bag.
Only then did I feel a little embarrassed about the chaos I had caused earlier.

“How do you kill someone?”
I asked the boy whose eyeball looked like it was going to pop out.
“Your aunt taught you.
Stab his eyes with chopsticks.
If you stab it carelessly, you'll end up with neither rice nor porridge.
Dig deep and forcefully until you can't go any further.
"You see? This lump."
The two children who were imitating their aunt's voice burst into laughter at the same time.
The children's advice was right.
You had to kill anything to call him.

“I don’t trust Mrs. Sim.”
It was an unexpected remark.
You don't trust Mrs. Shim, the number one contributor to sales.
I wonder if some conflict arose between the two of them without my knowledge.
“Do you remember my last birthday? When the police suddenly showed up.”
“I remember.
We've all been in and out of the police station several times because of that.
“Isn’t that a big deal?”
Park Tae-sang's eyelids were trembling slightly.
“If it weren’t for the police that day, I might have died.
“In Mrs. Shim’s hands.”

I have a .38 caliber revolver in my handbag right now.
It was faster, more accurate, and better than a sword for killer style.

I tried to push my hips back and plead, but Junki's hand, wrapped tightly around my wrist like a vine, wouldn't budge.
Finally he opened the closed door.
At that moment, I had a gut feeling.
It's time to use the pistol.

Publisher's Review
How Mrs. Sim Became a Killer

Sim Eun-ok has been practicing swordsmanship for 13 years.
Although she ran the butcher shop with her husband, she ran it almost entirely by herself.
My husband, who was handsome and had a good personality, grew old and shabby, and then went blind from diabetes.
One day, he got drunk and drove off, crashed into a bar, and died instantly.
It was ruled a suicide and no insurance money was paid.
After closing down the butcher shop and paying off the bar, the family was left with a two-bedroom rental apartment.
I don't even have time to be sad.
He has to make a living with his son Jinseop, who went to the military as soon as he entered school because he couldn't afford tuition, and his daughter Jinah, a high school student who became obsessed with studying after her father's death.
Mrs. Shim worked part-time in the meat section of a supermarket, but was forced to quit her job when the boss was arrested for gambling.
How should I live?
Look through the job postings.
There is an age limit, the distance is too far, or the pay is too low.
Then a phrase caught my eye.
'Recruiting housewives over 40, guaranteed monthly salary of 300, 500% confidentiality bonus, Smile' Eun-ok Shim, a middle school graduate with only experience running a butcher shop, goes to Smile with the intention of grabbing even a rope.
But it turns out that it was a detective agency, and the owner, Park Tae-sang, whose eyes shine with his experience as a butcher, suddenly asks him to hold a knife.

“Let me be blunt and make a suggestion.
“Please be a killer.”

Sim Eun-ok is a fifty-one-year-old woman.
I've been butchering meat my whole life, but that's only for dead animals. I don't have the guts to become a killer who kills living people.
What caught her, who was trying to escape, claiming she wasn't a killer, wasn't some fancy excuse like, "Isn't there someone we all hate so much we want to kill? If you're determined, Madam Shim, I can fulfill the earnest wishes of those who have been wronged."
Park Tae-sang takes out a gold bar in front of her.
If you kill a cheap guy and clear out some sort of cleanup, you can get a gold bar.
It was worth 70 million won.

70 million won.
It was the amount of money that could be earned by working nearly ten hours a day for three years without spending a single penny.
With that amount of money, you can get an apartment where you won't be able to pay the rent and your deposit will be gone in a month.
I could get Jinseop back to college, pay off his overdue utility bills and taxes, and even have Jinah tutor him.
It was a gracious 70 million won, money that could make everyone happy, if only my petty pride, driven by guilt, were not there.

“You’re becoming a murderer.
“Because of 70 million won.”
Park Tae-sang laughed.
The young man standing next to him also smiled awkwardly.
That wasn't a mockery directed at me.
It was a self-mockery that I couldn't help but pour out because they, too, had the same thoughts as me.
“Madam, let’s call ourselves problem solvers instead of murderers.”
It wasn't a funny joke, but I awkwardly laughed along with them.
Because green is the same color.

If you kill, you can live.
So I had no choice but to go to work at Smile Detective Agency.

Smile in the Yojigyeong
Happiness in the Yojigyeong
The world in Yojigyeong

As Mr. Park of Smile Detective Agency said, Mrs. Shim shows the appearance of a natural-born killer.
With his shabby appearance, sharp sword skills, and unfortunate family background, he sympathizes with those who entrust him with murder and takes care of the world's trash.
Thanks to her, Smile Detective Agency achieves the top spot in the industry, and as a result, begins to face competition from its competitor, Happy Planning.
Na Han-cheol, the president of Happy Planning, is wondering how to bring down Ms. Sim, a new recruit at Smile Detective Agency, when he discovers that they have a bad relationship that goes back to a point in the past.
Na Han-cheol decides to take revenge on Ms. Shim by touching the thing she loves most.
It is his son, Kim Jin-seop.

"Mrs. Sim is a Killer" unfolds the stories of the people surrounding Mrs. Sim in an omnibus format.
Park Tae-sang, the president of Smile Detective Agency, whose life was ruined after catching the eye of the daughter of the president of a famous raw fish restaurant while working at a raw fish restaurant; Choi Jun-ki, who came to Seoul to find his mother and ended up working at Smile Detective Agency; Lee Seong-ran, the wife of a police officer who got a job at Smile Detective Agency under the pretext of investigating the recent increase in murder cases; Na Han-cheol, the president of Happy Planning, who loved Sim Eun-ok in his youth but was rejected and has lived his life as a gangster; Hong Mi-sook, Na Han-cheol's wife who became a hairdresser after suffering many hardships after being sold to pay off her father's gambling debts; Hong Mi-sook's lover Han Byeong-pal, who makes a living by arranging soul marriages, and his clumsy friend Kim Sang-ho; Kim Jin-ah, the smart, studious, and quick-witted daughter of Mrs. Sim; Kim Jin-seop, who wanted to help his mother, the head of the household, but ended up getting a job at a rival company by mistake...
The story of Mrs. Shim, who becomes embroiled in a conspiracy and confronts her son, is the main axis, and the stories of the people around her, who carry out the incident with their own goals and desires, unfold in a breathless, sometimes sad, and sometimes comical way.

"Mrs. Sim is a Killer," which appeared in the world of genre literature with a new subject matter of a middle-aged female killer, uses the extreme subject matter of a killer to cut through our society in various ways.
Set in a detective agency that deals with all kinds of human desires in a dark place, the image of Ms. Shim, who satirizes the problems of survival that transcend ethics and the crowd of people living on the bottom gathered around it, with a rich vocabulary and expressions, still resonates today, humorously yet bitterly expanding the fragments of modern society.

Author's Note

I hated the obvious killer story, so I wrote a work with a middle-aged woman as the main character, “Mrs. Sim is a Killer.”
It has become my representative work and has also given me the joy of signing my first film rights contract.
And yet, as time passed, Sim Eun-ok became another self within me.
Whenever I wrote a manuscript that just wouldn't work out, whenever I started a series with a predictable outcome, whenever I entered a lecture hall with a sparse audience, Mrs. Sim handed me a well-sharpened knife.
“What difference does worrying make? Hey, Writer Kang.
Let's just live however we can.
“That’s always been our way,” he advised friendly.
