Laplace's Witch prequel

The best-selling novel representing the Japanese mystery novel world, Keigo Higashino's "The Birth of Magic" has been published by Hyundae Munhak with a translation by Yang Yun-ok.
"The Birth of Magic" is a prequel novel to "Laplace's Witch" that Higashino published in 2015 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his writing career. It is the second work in the [Laplace Series], released after three years in response to the expectations of many readers who had been hoping for a series.

[The Laplace Series] is a novel written by a writer with a unique background as a mystery novelist with a background in science and engineering, in which the unknown world of the brain and the difficult problems of physics are incorporated into the mystery.
Inspired by the 18th-century mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace's idea of an infinitely intelligent being, aka "Laplace's Demon," the author depicts a uniquely touching human drama, a captivating plot, and a surprising mystery through the exploits of the protagonist, "Laplace's Witch," who figures out the current location and momentum of every atom in the world.

Since 『The Birth of Magic』 was first released in Japan and Taiwan last year, local readers have welcomed the new [Laplace Series] with reactions such as, “A novel that further stimulates the imagination about how far the Laplace Witch’s powers can be exerted,” “A mysterious girl depicted in a more three-dimensional and attractive way,” and “It makes me want to read 『The Laplace Witch』 again.”

Translator's Note

Into the book
“Okay, I got it.
If you say so, I'll jump.
“Hey, let’s do it once at your signal.”
"You promised, right? If you don't keep your promise, you have no chance of winning."
“Okay, I promise, I promise.” Sakaya blurted out and turned around.
He said to Tsutsui and Nayuta, “If it’s going to be like this, I’ll have to run myself,” and strode into the building with big steps.
There was a sharp spirit in those eyes that had rarely been seen these days.
Nayuta and Tsutsui looked at each other, then turned to Madoka and said.
“Good job, good job.”
“What?” She asked with a blank expression.
“I’m saying you did a good job of persuading Mr. Sakaya.”
“I don’t care what happens to that idiot.
The problem is Stefan.
“Okay, let’s go.” Madoka started walking.
It looks like he's thinking of going to the coach's seat.
Nayuta stared at her back quietly, thinking back to what she had said just a moment ago.
It is not about being controlled by the wind, but about controlling the wind… … .
For some reason, I remembered the story about Madoka's mother losing her life in a tornado.

---From "Flying Against the Wind"

“Wow, that’s amazing,” Nayuta muttered.
“It’s a real magic ball.
“There’s no way to predict where it’s going to go.”
Then Madoka gave him a cold look.
“That expression is not accurate.”
“Then how should I say it?”
“To be exact...” She paused for a moment, as if searching for words, before continuing.
“I have to say that the prediction is late.
Ah, in Nayuta's case, I guess it's correct to say she can't predict things? Because she probably doesn't know how to predict things."
“Are you saying Madoka knows that?”
“Because it’s a simple physical phenomenon.
“There is no such thing as unpredictable physical phenomena.”
---From "With These Hands"

“Simply put, it involves implanting genetically modified cancer cells that are not malignant into damaged areas of the brain.
Further, we insert tiny electrodes, current generators, and batteries to stimulate the cells.
“It’s called the Uhara surgery because it’s a surgery that only a father can perform.”
“I don’t know for sure, but it must be a difficult surgery.
“Have you had any surgery in the past?”
“How many times has it happened?
However, procedures on certain specific areas are not permitted.
“It’s a part called the Laplace Core, but fortunately, Minato’s damaged part is far from there, so there’s no problem.”
“Isn’t surgery on that Laplace or whatever area more dangerous?”
“I guess you could say it’s dangerous, but I’m saying it’s better not to do it.
“Even if there are a lot of monsters, it’s just annoying.”
“A monster?”
---From "Where the River Flows"

“Someone told me this story.
This world is not run by just a few people.
People who at first glance appear to have no talent or value are the ones who are the most important components.
Even if each individual lives a general and unconscious life, when they come together, they realize dramatic physical laws.
“Humans are atoms… … .”
Madoka turned her face towards Nayuta.
“When I heard that, I thought it was a really cool way of thinking.
This means that even the most ordinary human being can participate in the flow of this society as long as he or she is alive.
But after hearing Asahina-san's words, my thoughts changed a little.
Society doesn't always flow in a good direction.
I learned that the accumulation of unconscious prejudice or discrimination can sometimes create a wrong trend.”
“Are you saying that Asahina shouldn’t have come out?”
Madoka shook her head slightly.
"I don't know.
“That’s why I’m trying to find out.” He stared at Nayuta with his eyes raised at the ends.
“Right, that’s right.”
Nayuta started the car while looking ahead.

---From "Even if I get lost and wander somewhere"

Aoe was lost in thought, his gaze cast across the narrow, long valley.
What conditions must be met for the concentration of hydrogen sulfide gas here to become so high that it could poison a person to death?
Is it okay to simply say, “Unfortunate coincidences overlap,”?
But it's hard to think of any other reason besides that.
There is absolutely no possibility that anything artificial was involved.
Unless there is something called magic power in this world… … .
---From "The Birth of Magic"

Publisher's Review
A mysterious girl who reads the movements of nature,
She calculates and works miracles.

"The Birth of Magic" begins when young bedding maker Nayuta Kudo meets Madoka Uhara, a teenage girl with eyes that somehow remind him of a cat.
The two met at the laboratory of a fluid engineering expert, and she had come there to obtain the results of an investigation into a tornado accident that occurred in Hokkaido seven years ago, introduced by her father, a genius brain surgeon. (*『Laplace's Witch』 begins with the scene of this tornado accident that Madoka experienced when she was ten years old, and investigates the mysterious hydrogen sulfide poisoning death that occurred eight years later.
In other words, the time setting of 『The Birth of Magic』 is exactly one year before the events of 『Laplace's Witch』.

Meanwhile, Nayuta had followed her patient, a ski jumper, and when Madoka came in, the group was analyzing the cause of the athlete's slump.
However, after watching the match video, she suddenly pointed out the cause in an instant, saying, “The upper body is moving quickly” (page 19), and then went on to notice the athlete’s old injury, and even read the ever-changing wind flow on the ski jump, showing an astonishing and eerie predictive power.
A girl who keeps her distance from others due to her mysterious ability that is usually seen as 'magic' in the eyes of ordinary people, and sometimes appears arrogant and blunt, but uses her calculation skills to produce results that are helpful to others.
From then on, Nayuta witnesses the small 'miracles' that this girl, whom she keeps encountering, brings to people who are frustrated with their fate.

Keigo Higashino tackles the mysteries unknown to humanity.
The Mysteries of Brain Science and Physics, and the Mystery of Love

This novel, consisting of a total of five chapters, centers around the series' first appearance, Nayuta Kudo, and Madoka's abilities, and a new story unfolds in each chapter.
Although each chapter has a distinct introduction, development, turn, and conclusion, it appears at first glance to be an independent collection of short stories, the omnibus-style episodes come together to form one large story, and the structure that leads to the previous work, 『Laplace's Witch』, at the end creates a solid link between the two works.

'The most beloved novelist in Korea over the past 10 years' (Kyobo Book Centre, January 30, 2019)
(Aggregate results) One of the distinguishing features that allowed Keigo Higashino to gain popularity among a wide range of readers beyond genre literature is that there is always a warmth of humanism at the heart of his mysteries.
As in the previous work, the author likens human existence to 'atoms', the elements that make up this world, and 'The Birth of Magic' presents characters, each with their own special qualities, like atoms, as its main characters.
A ski jumper struggling with a slump, a baseball catcher trying to overcome trauma, a composer grappling with the loss of a same-sex lover, and the parents of a brain-dead disabled child—the novel depicts a miracle that is only completed when ordinary characters all do their part and come together, rather than the efforts of a protagonist with overwhelming abilities.
Furthermore, with this story expanding the worldview with colorful imagination about what the warm-hearted Laplace Witch can accomplish, 『The Birth of Magic』 further raises expectations for the series to follow.

Meanwhile, the movie "Laplace's Witch," which was released in Japan last year starring Sho Sakurai, Suzu Hirose, and Sota Fukushi, is scheduled for release in Korea this year, 2019.

- After closing the bookcase, I wanted to reread 『Laplace's Witch』.
- After watching the trailer for the movie [Laplace's Witch], I enjoyed reading it as my expectations and imagination grew as a movie fan.
There are probably quite a few people who go from being movie fans to readers of Higashino's works.
There is no doubt that it has the power to make you want to read at least other works.
- Up until Chapter 3, I thought the story would be completed in one piece, but then a shocking past was revealed! It was woven into a double and triple structure, and I felt exhilarated, thinking, "This is Higashino Keigo!"
I should read 『Laplace's Witch』 again.
- Madoka version of Galileo!
- I was able to enjoy Laplace's world more richly.
And it was nice to be able to get a better understanding of the mysterious girl's personality.
