Apology of Socrates
Description
Book Introduction
Socrates dies, philosophy lives
The starting point of Plato's philosophy, "The Apology of Socrates"

If Western philosophy is a commentary on Plato's dialogues, then Plato's dialogues are a commentary on the Apology.

The Apology of Socrates, the most widely known of Plato's dialogues and the starting point of Platonic philosophy, has been republished as part of the Jeongam Classics Collection's Plato Collection.
The Apology is the only work of Plato that includes Socrates' name in the title, and it is also a weighty work that vividly conveys Socrates' speech through direct speech.

Socrates, who pondered how to achieve community happiness in Athens in the 5th century BC, where the system and practice of democracy were being established.
As that century of glory faded, the intellectuals of the time did not overlook Socrates, who stood before the court as a scapegoat.
Not only his trial but also a series of his actions and conversations received attention, and the genre called 'Socratic Tales', which included virtually all of Plato's dialogues, became popular.
If we compare it to the British philosopher Whitehead's expression that 2000 years of Western philosophy were nothing more than commentaries on Plato's dialogues, then it would not be an exaggeration to say that Plato's dialogues are commentaries on the Apology.

Into the book
“Men of Athens, I do not know what has happened to you because of those who accused me.
But anyway, because of them, I almost forgot who I was.
That's how convincingly they were speaking.
But as far as the truth is concerned, it can be said that they have said virtually nothing.”
--- p.25~26

“If I were to tell you that to talk about virtue and other things every day is the highest good a human being can have, and that the life lived without examination is not worth living, you would dislike me even more for saying this.”
--- p.101

“No, it’s already time to leave.
It's time for me to die, and for you to live.
“It is unclear to anyone but God which of us is headed for the better.”
--- p.115

“The life of philosophy, which began with the death of Socrates, has remained by our side as a beacon to awaken us from indolence, and democracy, which has gone through glory and shame, has also been splendidly revived as another force that influences our lives.
Therefore, reading the Apology is also an act of creating and sharing the story of our lives, politics, and love that overlaps with the story of Socrates' life and death.”
--- p.148

If I were to name one book that epitomizes the alpha and omega of philosophy, I would choose Apology without hesitation.
One of the works I read most and most enjoyably while studying and teaching is "Apology."
“Excuse” is a text that never disappoints, approaching you with different faces and feelings every time you read it, giving you new insights and teachings.

Publisher's Review
Socrates, standing before the court, defends his philosophical life instead of arguing his innocence.

The Apology is a work by Plato that reproduces a speech given by Socrates at his trial in democratic Athens in 399 BC, when he was accused of impiety and corrupting the youth.
Rather than simply refute the charges and argue for acquittal, Socrates argues against the accusations that imply questions and challenges to his entire life.
It is an 'apology' for the way of life represented by Socrates, that is, for philosophy and the philosophical life itself.

Professor Kang Cheol-woong, the translator, emphasizes the aspect of Socrates who, even in a trial where he faced death, maintained his basic beliefs and attitude while listening to the opinions of those with different beliefs and communicating flexibly.
It is the spirit of agon (contest) and balance of serious play that Socrates consistently demonstrated in his life.
Reading classic texts that are over 2,000 years old serves as a mirror that allows us to question our lives and the direction they take, thanks to the great spirit embedded in these works.

The newly published Jeongam Classics Series Plato's complete works, "The Apology of Socrates"

『The Apology of Socrates』, which is presented as part of the Jeongam Classics Series Plato Complete Works, has been edited to correct errors in the previous edition and to fit the newly refined system of the complete works.
It is said that the strengths of the Jeongamhakdang Plato Complete Works, such as thorough research translation through joint reading and abundant annotations, have been maintained while making full use of the stylish design and readability.

With the publication of the complete works approaching in the next one or two years, Jeongam Academy and publisher Akanet plan to focus on translating new Plato works, such as “Charmides,” “The Statesman,” “Parmenides,” and “The Republic,” while also steadily publishing new translations of existing Plato works.
This time, with the simultaneous publication of 『Apology of Socrates』 and 『Symposium』, which are considered the starting point of Plato's philosophy, a new milestone has been set in the goal of publishing the complete works of Plato.
