Book Introduction
『Tasha's Paintings』 2025 Hardcover Edition to be published
The lovely story of Tasha Tudor's paintings, told through a collection of over 140 works.
About the joy of drawing the life you want, brightly and lightly.
Highly recommended by Jeong Yeo-ul and Muru!
The essay "Tasha's Paintings," which summarizes the life of Tasha Tudor, an artist who pursued happiness in her own way, has been published.
Since its first publication in 2007, this book has been considered one of the best essays that show the life of the 'painter' Tasha Tudor, and has moved countless readers. It has returned with a warm and welcoming face like a snowflake.
From a dedicated children's book writer to an artist beloved by people around the world, Tasha's humorous life philosophy and her lifelong collection of over 140 paintings unfold like a pictorial.
This revised edition, a hardcover cover edition featuring Tasha's masterpiece, "Laura in the Snow," will be an especially special gift for those who love Tasha's uniquely clear and warm works.
Naturalist, horticulturalist, chef… .
There are many adjectives used to describe Tasha Tudor, but she always referred to herself as a painter.
Tasha, who taught herself to draw from a young age, drew everything around her.
Flowers in the garden, trees in winter, children playing in the garden and lovely animals.
Let's follow Tasha's pure and cheerful journey of drawing, who proudly replied, "Of course, all the drawings I draw are real and reflect my life," to the comment that she "has a truly remarkable imagination."
For Tasha, painting was life itself, before it was a dream.
She made a living by illustrating 『The Secret Garden』 and 『Sarah's Story』, and it was practically her only source of income while raising four children on her own, and it was the foundation that allowed her to build the garden she had dreamed of all her life when she was nearing 60.
As the author Muru recommends, “When you need to find the strength to live your life the way you want to live,” he thinks of Tasha Tudor. His world of paintings, which he created by fully examining the things he was born and raised in and independently cultivating his own life, is therefore considered beautiful and unique.
The innocent expressions of children playing in the garden, the adorable movements of corgis, the fantastical Christmas cards, and the welcome illustrations from picture books from my childhood.
With every page turn, you can hear the excited voice of painter Tasha Tudor, who has been painting tirelessly for 90 years, delicately capturing the sparkling moments of everyday life.
“Painting is a fun activity.
I express what I see with my eyes as I feel it.
I feel like I've become a god.
“Because you can make the world the way you want to make it.” We invite you into the life of Tasha, who created the world she dreamed of in a cheerful and lighthearted way.

Into the book
Tasha Tudor's art is difficult to separate from her life.
For a long time, the two have been firmly connected as one.
From an early age, Tasha took great pleasure in sketching and coloring the people and landscapes around her.
As she grew older and her life picture became richer and more delicate, her artistic world also became more diverse.
--- p.11 From the "Prologue"
Tasha believes she was inspired as an artist by her mother.
“My brother Frederick and I used to bathe together in the big bathtub.
Whenever we took a bath, my mother would wash her brush next to us.
He always left a brush with a lot of paint on it and used it to draw faces on my brother's and my stomach.
When we stick our stomach out or pull it in with force, our facial expression changes.
It was really fun.
Right then and there, I decided to become a painter.
I became a painter so naturally, as if everything I wanted came easily to me.
“I think it’s a good job.” --- p.34 from “Family”
Tasha's 1944 work, "Mother Goose," is considered her best work and is full of adorable drawings.
This work is a fun story between children and animals, and it clearly shows the innocence of children.
These characteristics, which are also vividly depicted in Tasha's later works, are displayed to the utmost in this work.
The illustrations in "Mother Goose," which feature notable pencil drawings alongside excellent watercolors, have become classics and remain among the greatest works of illustration of all time.
Tasha won her first Caldecott Medal for this book.
--- p.45 From “The Fruit of Patience”
In 1961, Tasha's divorce from Thomas McCready brought an end to the tension in her life.
Years later, she said, “It was the best decision I ever made.”
Just as Tasha had 50 years earlier rejected her father's surname and taken her mother's, her children also changed their surname to Tudor.
Tasha loved to quote a passage from Henry David Thoreau's work, Walden.
“If you confidently pursue your dreams and strive to live the life you’ve always imagined, you’ll find unexpected success in your everyday life.” Tasha was heading straight in that direction.
--- p.81 From “The Painter’s Wife”
Tasha started drawing Corgiville again with Tasha Tudor's Advent Calendar, and published her first advent calendar as a book.
The actual calendar features the residents of Corgiville gathering in the town square to celebrate Christmas.
Their happy appearance shows the people Tasha cherishes enjoying life to the fullest.
--- p.123 From "White Canvas"
Tasha has had a long-standing habit of burning paintings she doesn't like.
They mercilessly destroyed the paintings without any thought of the financial gain they would make from selling them.
It didn't matter how well I drew compared to other people.
She was more concerned with how the painting would look through the eyes of the artist she aspired to be.
I used to hide paintings I didn't like, and when I felt pressured about them, I would light a fire in the fireplace and burn them to relieve my self-loathing.
--- p.133 From "The Lost Picture"
Tasha, who had a habit of relying on her sense of touch when drawing, liked to look at and touch what she was drawing.
I rarely drew solely from my imagination, and I really hated drawing from photographs.
I often said, 'What the camera sees is not people, but only the material.'
She used photography only when absolutely necessary.
"I guess we have to make exceptions when drawing things like tigers," Tasha said, only reluctantly yielding when absolutely necessary.
--- p.153 From “Shining Craftsmanship”
Tasha painted the world as she saw it.
The perspective is so original and satisfying that it is admirable.
She did not see the times we live in, and she had a different philosophy than ours.
She struggled to cope with the pressures of the modern world, which she could neither understand nor respect.
She always believed that she had lived in the 1830s in her previous life and that she had brought all her memories and skills with her into this life.

Publisher's Review
The painter who made life into art,
How to Draw Tasha Tudor's Own Life
Everyone dreams of a life where what they love becomes their job.
How happy would it be to be able to fully express your tastes and skills, earn an income, and work fulfillingly? Gardener, chef, craftsman, naturalist... let's delve into the life of Tasha Tudor, a dedicated artist who, despite her many titles, produced over 100 picture books over a span of 70 years.
Tasha Tudor, who raised four children alone by drawing picture books, consistently drew pictures of things around her.
Looking at the clear watercolor paintings that stimulate the memories and imagination he left behind, one can catch a glimpse of the 'silent realization' permeating the beautiful lines and colors.
Tasha says.
“There is not a single painting that depicts something that has not been seen in everyday life.” From skillfully made clothes and dolls, to everyday household items, to diligently tended gardens, to lovely children, to Christmas cards and fairy tales.
"Tasha's Paintings" unfolds the 140 or so paintings left behind by Tasha Tudor, one by one, and tells of the artist's 'consistency' in turning everyday life into art.
The moment a favorite painting becomes a work of art, you can catch a glimpse of the artist's story and voice as he diligently lives each day, moving forward on the path he wants to take, while going back and forth between joy and sorrow, through lovely paintings.
“Life is something to be lived and savored.”
A life of painting that shines with sincerity and cheerfulness
“I am a commercial artist, and I paint to make a living.
“To raise children, buy flower seeds, and raise animals.” As Tasha firmly responded to the public’s assessment that she had a noble hobby (painting), painting was life itself before it was a dream for her.
Born into a talented and prestigious family, Tasha Tudor was left in the care of another family at a young age due to her parents' divorce. There, she nurtured her dreams through various experiences and creative activities.
After an unsatisfactory marriage and divorce, she raised four children and took on the enormous burden of household chores, while earning a living through illustration work and living a strong life.
The girl, who naturally decided to 'become an artist' next to her artist mother, who used leftover paint to paint her younger brother and her own stomach, has grown into a recognized artist and icon of happiness loved by people around the world at the age of nearly 60.
From the honor of the 'Caldecott Medal' awarded to the best children's author to being loved for her unique lifestyle, 'Tasha's Pictures' unfolds like a gentle movie about the difficult life of an artist who tirelessly creates her own world, even if it is late, and the fruits of her labor.
