Description
Book Introduction
Anyway, the twenty-ninth in the series is Mountain.
From climbing Jirisan Mountain to escape the never-ending daily life, to weekend hikes that started that way, to trekking in the Himalayas that made me quit my job, to working as a mountaineering magazine reporter to approach the mountains more seriously, and even to the world of trail running, where you sometimes run 100km up the mountains, this is a collection of thirteen stories that will make you conclude, "He really does love the mountains very much."

A majestic landscape that makes you cry, a quiet forest where you can hear whistling, a heartbeat that makes you feel like you're going to die, and the feel of the wind caressing your skin.
The heat and coolness that anyone who has climbed a mountain knows are fully conveyed in the author's story.
Also, for those who are satisfied with the mountain as a scenery and background rather than something to climb, they will feel the heart and energy of someone who has passionately loved something.

Into the book
My heart was filled with excitement as I looked at the panoramic view of the mountains.
It was a different kind of joy from the joy of reaching the goal at this moment.
The joy of having a next, the joy of having another mountain, the joy of being able to climb it whenever there is a mountain.
Suddenly, the place where I was standing felt like a small dot.
I wanted to keep connecting these dots.
I wanted to climb more mountains.
I wanted to stand higher.
---From "Himalaya, I Want to Be Strong"

Things that could not have happened without effort, things that could not have been easily achieved without letting go of some part of life, some time of daily life, some section of life, were happening ceaselessly in the mountains.
And those were the things that my heart was drawn to.
Those were also stories that could not be heard in the world unless you listened carefully.
I hoped their unrefined, rough breathing and raw language would not disappear.
I only hoped that their passion and love for the mountains would continue to be conveyed to this world.
I wanted to convey that passion and affection.
---From "Days of Virtue"

Aren't the decisive events in life only achieved when we push ourselves beyond our limits, when we push ourselves to overcome our limits?
Everyone will have it as hard as I do, or harder than I do.
How many people can maintain peak condition on a mountain ridge nearly 4,000 meters above sea level?
Moreover, when will I be able to come here again?
Even if I come to Mont Blanc, will I ever have the chance to climb to the summit?
How long has it been since we started preparing in Korea?
---From "Where Failure Is More Natural"

I loved the feeling of running lightly and quickly up the mountain.
I loved the joy I felt from running towards my own record and the feeling that I was truly the protagonist of my own life.
The energy I felt running on the road, panting, with a small racing backpack on my back and a headlamp on my forehead, in front of the starting line at dawn, amidst the countdown, became the strength that sustained me back to my daily life.
---From "With My Heart, With My Two Legs"

I wanted to do well, I thought I could do well… .
I walked and walked like a defeated soldier and eventually DNF (Do Not Finish).
With 10 kilometers left to the finish line.
I wanted to quit.
I ran so hard, but why did I only get this far? Is this all I can do? Why is it so hard? What do I want from running so hard? I want to walk, I want to stop. What is all this? It's hard, it's so hard...
---From "With My Heart, With My Two Legs"

There was a time when I ran with only the hope of finishing the race.
There was a time when I ran with a face full of excitement, hoping for good records and rankings.
Then there were times when all of this felt meaningless and burdensome.
But still, there came a time when I realized that I could never give up on running in my life.
---From "With My Heart, With My Two Legs"

I like mountains that I climb quietly and humbly.
I like that mountain that cools me down when I'm excited.
But I also like mountains that are fiercely and fiercely climbed.
I also like that mountain that warms me up.
A mountain that faces inward is good, and a mountain that communicates with the outside is also good.
Going back and forth between the two mountains, I feel like I'm slowly finding a pace that's comfortable for me.
---From "With the Mountain"

I think that simply steadily climbing the small, low mountains that I can climb now is what it means to live as a living person.
Isn't it a bit foolish to not be able to properly enjoy this moment spent on a small, low mountain on a weekday afternoon, and instead only look at the distant, high mountain that isn't here now?
If I keep climbing small and low mountains every day, time will pass and the mountain will connect me to another mountain.
It will take you to another world.
As always.
---From "Back Mountain Climber"

Publisher's Review

“Now I know.
“It was good because it was hard.”

Finding balance in life in the mountains
A place to cool down an excited heart, a place to run wildly, the mountain was all of those places.
And the place where the temperature of the heart found balance was also the mountain.
The author first climbed a mountain when he was twenty-five, not long after starting his career.
From then on, I had a time that could be called 'finding a balance between life and the mountains.'
A balance between what you really like and what you have to do.
So this book is also a story of a mountain and a life of wandering and settling down.
There were times when it could have been called failure or giving up.
But in the mountains, where failure is more natural, the muscles of the mind also grow.
Just like the warm warmth that comes after the hot heat has cooled, the mind that has been trained through ups and downs in the mountains, from the time when I didn't know what to do with the mountains to now having a steadfast attitude towards life with the mountains by my side, has actually made me stronger in life.

Because I want to become stronger
A poster for a trail running competition discovered by chance in a village at the foot of Mont Blanc, where I was on an overseas expedition.
The author returns to Korea and plunges into the world of mountain running.
In the first Jeju Island 100km race I participated in, I finished last, and after that, I finished and DNFed (Do Not Finish) several times, and placed in several races.
The energy you feel when running lightly and quickly up a mountain, the joy you feel when running toward your own personal record.
The feeling of wanting to run for ten hours with my heart and my two legs giving it my all, and the sensations I get when I run like that.
The thrill that comes only when you cross the finish line.
To know that feeling, and to feel it again, I ran 1,500 kilometers in over 30 competitions around the world.
I ran up the mountain because I wanted to become stronger, and I approached the mountain seriously.
In that way, the determination of a person who has dedicated his life to something he loves and the longing of a person who holds something in his heart are deeply conveyed.

Anyone who has climbed a mountain
It is now the age of the mountains again.
Although mountaineering remains the undisputed number one hobby among Koreans, the way people enjoy the mountains has changed little by little.
At one time, people wearing comfortable mountaineering clothes and climbing the mountains behind the Himalayas led the mountaineering craze.
Now, if you search #sanstagram, you'll find a flood of photos of women in simple leggings getting their bodies checked.
The number of people who enjoy 'solo mountaineering' has increased as much as the number of people who enjoy 'group mountaineering'.
Everyone has different reasons for climbing a mountain.
Some people challenge themselves to climb the '14 peaks of 8,000 meters', while others treat mountains as a leisurely weekend hobby.
Some people carry their fervent desires and head to a mountain hermitage.
Although the love for the mountains and the enjoyment of the mountains may differ, the mountains are fair to everyone.
You have to take each difficult step to reach the top.
There is clearly a feeling that only the person standing there can feel.
Those who have experienced that joy and freedom will fully feel the scenery, texture, and warmth of heart contained in this story.
