[Prologue] Why We Always Fail at Studying
9 Essential Study Tips to Never Miss Out on Important Things

Chapter 1.
Momentum depends on the 'goal'

What moves me
The results must be meaningful to me more than anyone else.
It only takes one second to make a decision.
Imagine it's already been accomplished from the start
You can't start without a big stride
Accept inferiority complex as a part of life.
Studying or working never goes smoothly.

Chapter 2.
A shift in thinking that penetrates the essence of study

Imitation instead of creation
The first premise of the combination: exploration and gathering
The second premise of the combination: analysis
Completing the Combination: Imparting Core Values

Chapter 3.
A study process that produces good results even with less study

Look at the ground, not the forest or the trees
Skip unnecessary intermediate steps
Dig deep into a field to gain intuition
Study by comparing horizontally
From the concrete to the abstract
Distinguish between relearning and review.

Chapter 4.
Time management techniques that take energy efficiency into account

The tempo is fast, the timing is appropriate
How to prioritize your tasks
Consider energy distribution rather than wake-up time.
How to use accrued time
The essence of time management lies in output.

The art of concentration that comes naturally without effort

Concentration is a skill, not an effort.
The goal must be clear and simple.
Change it to something you love
Eliminate distractions
Increase the proportion of output
Distinguish what you put in your head
Feedback is also an element of focus

Mental management techniques to stabilize your wavering mentality

Every moment is me
I must start by believing in myself and moving forward.
Am I making myself insecure?
How to Block Out External Factors That Cause Anxiety
How to endure stagnation that doesn't change no matter what you do
How to manage anxiety at each stage of preparation from start to finish

Chapter 7.
Organizing and withdrawing methods that can be used immediately

We are suffering from constipation of knowledge
Be aware of the purpose of organizing
Timing of organization is also important
Organize with images rather than text
I must be the one in charge of organizing things.
Gather and organize in one place
Create a trigger for the accident
When you think everything is organized, do it twice more
How to check if your account has been 'cleared for withdrawal'

Chapter 8.
There is still a chance to change, the art of inspection

Self-Feedback: Think from the Evaluator's Perspective
Self-Feedback: Can You Explain It in One Word?
Feedback from Third Parties: Distinguishing Signal from Noise
Consider whether that is really a disadvantage.
Edit precisely and in detail
Change or Die: Output Sensitivity
Focus on what you can change
The desire for perfection is your greatest enemy.

Chapter 9.
Who will create the perfect result in the end?

Time to get back to basics
Go through the calibration process

Into the book
Talent has less influence in academics than in other areas.
In academics, there are fewer people with natural talent than in other fields, but good results go to a lot of people, unlike in other fields.
For example, if you rank 3,000th in the nation in soccer, it will be difficult to make a living from it, but if you rank 3,000th in the nation in studying, it will be easier to get into Seoul National University or pass the bar exam.
And in academics, talent means problem-solving skills.
I don't necessarily need to invent a new problem-solving method like Edison. I can get the same results by just going to the supermarket and buying a mass-produced light bulb. Just like that, even if I don't have talent, I can get the same results as someone with talent by learning how to study.
--- p.9, from “Why We Always Fail at Studying”

Because test takers have difficulty accurately assessing themselves and are unfamiliar with the effectiveness of study methods, they often mistakenly believe that poor results indicate a lack of effort or will.
However, studying is not a matter of 'will' but a matter of 'method'.
Moreover, ‘will’ only becomes valuable when it is based on the right ‘method’.
Studying is like deciding in which direction to take the train called 'me'.
The will is the fuel, and the method is the rails.
If you lay the rails properly and refuel, you will reach your destination even if it takes a while. However, if you didn't lay the rails properly in the first place, you will end up going to the wrong place even if you have too much fuel.
In other words, knowing the right study method and starting out is the task of laying the right path to achieve your dreams beyond passing the exam.
--- p.9, from “Why We Always Fail at Studying”

Let's look back at the mindset we have when we start something new.
People who have always studied well will have no problem, but students who want to do well on the midterm exam with a new mindset, office workers who want to start studying English with a new mindset from today, and test takers who want to break away from yesterday's self and go all-in to pass the exam.
Anyone who takes on a 'new task' begins with a reverent attitude.
But this is the problem.
This piety should be about posture and attitude, and if it infiltrates the method, it will cause great problems.
It's about creating goals that are too big and idealistic.
People don't realize that the thought, 'Shouldn't I do this much?' is the wrong first step.
What remains afterwards is only frustration in the process of execution and bitter self-recrimination.
--- p.22, from “What Moves Me”

Simply following the "good test takers" that other people or my subconscious has created without making the effort to find a study method that truly suits me and brings me happiness can cause my study period to be unnecessarily prolonged or sometimes prevent me from reaching my desired destination.
Of course, it is important to refer to the study methods of people who are good at studying and use them as a subject of analysis.
Because it reduces unnecessary trial and error.
However, it is necessary to analyze it, apply it to your own studies, and refine it in a way that suits you.
--- p.32, from “The results should be more meaningful to me than to anyone else”

You may not have been aware of it, but at least when studying for an exam, the object or goal of your study is the 'criteria for solving the problem.'
I call this the 'problem-solving protocol'.
It means that it is my own problem-solving formula.
Whether you study through lectures, books, or any other method, all of that studying is a significant prerequisite for creating a problem-solving protocol.
'I studied hard.
Unfortunately, saying 'the grades just didn't come out' is just an excuse.
Studying doesn't depend on how much you know, but on how well you can create your own formula to solve problems.
Not studying the 'problem solving criteria (or protocol)', which is the output or information needed to solve the problem, is the same as not studying at all.
--- p.97, from “Skipping Unnecessary Intermediate Steps”

I often hear that reviewing is important when studying.
But what exactly is "review"? The dictionary defines it as "repeating something," but is that really the case? (…) In conclusion, "review" should be distinguished into two types.
The first is relearning, and the second is real review.
That is, the review we think of actually has a premise.
This is because repeating what you have learned and making it your own is only possible if you have completely created the object of repetition.
But usually, we don't distinguish between these things and just 're-study' what we learned before after a certain amount of time has passed.
However, since studying is mostly difficult and painful, students can escape the pain of studying by looking at what they know and what is comfortable and familiar.
That's why we always know what we know and don't supplement what we don't know.
--- p.121, from “Distinguish between relearning and review”

For working people, even if they want to study something new, they can't use their time freely due to unpredictable meetings and company dinners.
My wake-up and bedtime from last week, this week, and next week are all different.
Since the beginning and end of each day vary for each person and for each specific period, what principles should we follow to manage our time? The answer is to spend time according to the flow of energy within our bodies.
It doesn't really matter what time you go to bed and what time you wake up.
(…) Such a regular life and the pursuit of efficiency based on numbers are actually nothing more than psychological inducements.
It's just that I wake up earlier than everyone else, feel satisfied and inspired by fitting myself into the ideal human image, and spend the rest of my day feeling good about it.
--- p.141, from “Consider energy distribution rather than wake-up time”

Most of us have probably had the experience of our eyes constantly lingering on the same page while studying, or of seeing something but not remembering it at all, as if it just passed over the words.
Or, you may have planned to take a lot of online lectures, such as "basic lectures," over several months, only to find yourself unable to study at all until you start solving problems and finally come to your senses and start studying.
(…) In this situation, most people diagnose that it is because I lack concentration.
But that diagnosis was wrong.
This problem is caused by incorrectly setting the ratio of input to output, and has nothing to do with innate concentration.
--- p.174, from “Increase the Proportion of Output”

Publisher's Review
***Attorney Lee Yoon-gyu, the best author in the study method field
***Study method approved by 400,000 test takers
“There is a study method that will definitely help you pass!”
The revised and expanded edition of the bestseller "The Essence of Study" has been published!

The study method for passing the exam is all in this one book!

Attorney Lee Yoon-gyu, who is considered one of the best authors in the study method field, has published bestsellers such as “I Only Study to Pass the Exam” and “The Art of Memorization to Pass the Exam Without Exception.”
One of his bestsellers, The Essence of Study, has been revised and expanded thanks to the enthusiastic support of readers.

This book was loved by many readers at the time of its publication as a book that summarized Attorney Lee Yoon-gyu's core secrets for passing the exam. In this revised and expanded edition, we have supplemented the 'Study Style Test & Solution' that was a limited appendix to the first edition and was greatly missed by readers who did not receive it. In addition, we have included a 'Study Method Self-Checklist' as another appendix so that you can check your own study method and make the study methods you learned in the book your own.
And throughout the text, you can learn upgraded study methods by supplementing content tailored to the current readers.

Neither talent nor willpower can be a problem.

When we have trouble studying, we easily say things like, “I don’t think you have the talent to study” or “It must be your lack of willpower.”
However, in studying, ‘talent’ has less influence than in other areas.
While there are fewer people with natural talent in some fields than in others, there are a lot of people who can achieve great results in others.
Studying is not a matter of 'will' but of 'method'.
When it is said that the will is fuel and the method is the rails, if you lay the rails properly and replenish the fuel, you will reach your destination even if it is late, but if you did not lay the rails properly in the first place, even if you have an overflow of fuel, you will end up going to the wrong place.
So, what study method will determine success or failure? "The Essence of Studying" guides you through nine crucial study techniques to ensure you pass any exam without fail.

A confident study method that helps you know yourself and beat your competitors

The author says that when counseling students, he often feels sorry that they don't know what the problem is in their studies.
I feel like I've studied as hard as everyone else, and I've followed all the good study methods, but when it comes to the actual exam, my grades aren't good.
The author says the following about this:

“We haven’t studied what actual evaluators want.
In order to get rid of my anxiety without knowing much about it, I considered it studying to integrate myself into a large group of people and become assimilated.
The result is not a successful candidate, but a ‘model failure.’”

Studying should not be simply about psychological satisfaction, but should provide real satisfaction through 'results'.
In other words, you should become a ‘smart successful student’ rather than a ‘model student’.
“The Essence of Study” overturns existing misconceptions about studying.
And it helps you properly recognize what is truly important in studying, establish your own study method, and achieve the results you desire.

9 Techniques to Get the Results You Want Quickly and Surely

The study methods presented in this book are divided into three areas.
First, Chapters 1 and 6, which are about the 'mind', contain the motivation and driving force needed to start studying, as well as mental management methods to keep you from wavering once your studies are on track.
The second area of 'execution' can be said to be the main content, and it contains a method of changing the way of thinking to make other people's study methods my own (Chapter 2), a study process that requires less study and achieves faster results (Chapter 3), an organization and retrieval method that can be used immediately (Chapter 7), a technique to check whether there is still room for change, and a finishing technique to increase the completeness of the results (Chapters 8-9).
Finally, Chapters 4 and 5, which cover the "key variables" area, will guide you through time management and focus techniques, helping you increase energy efficiency and become more naturally immersed.
If you can master just these nine skills, you will achieve the "sense of complete accomplishment" that allows you to firmly grasp the goals that have been elusive for so long, sooner than planned.

Achievement in study leads to achievement in life.

If you repeatedly fail at your desired goals, whether it be in your studies or work, your judgment will become clouded and your vision will narrow.
The cause lies elsewhere, but blame is placed on things like an innate talent for studying, poor circumstances, and lack of will and effort.
If you do that, your self-esteem will only drop.
Now, let's not give up on studying for that reason.
If I don't stop, I can continue to create a 'better me'.

The author says:
“The timing of opportunity and achievement will be different for each person.
Life goes on.
The important thing is where you set your destination.
It is a pity that people give up and run away easily as if a moment of frustration and pain were everything.” Let’s bring out our potential study skills through ‘The Essence of Study’ and properly incorporate a study mindset into our lives.
I am confident that this book will be of some help to many people who have defaulted to giving up at every moment in their lives, and who will now experience the shining experience of achievement.
